PopsiLufsJesus -> Salty Mucus. Or so I think... (7/31/2008 2:02:52 AM)

This might be strange, but lately I have had overly salty mucus or at least I think it is salt. It sort of burns like heartburn, but not quite as bad. Does anyone know what it may be?

I would love you forever if you had the answer...

And before the question arises...I do not eat hardly any salt at all! Actually I don't like it too much really. So this is really rather strange for me and I wish I could get the taste out of my mouth...

I'm a bit confused - you say the taste is in your mouth but it burns like heartburn? Heartburn is sort of between your upper chest and your neck. So are you saying you have the salty taste AND a pain elsewhere?

And for how long have you had it? had you been eating anything different just before that?

If you are not drinking enough you may be more aware of the salty taste (when you are properly hydrated, the salt is not as concentrated in the mucus)... all mucus has Na, K and Cl which can form salt. I don't know what the burning would be ... if it continues to burn, see a doctor and get his/her input.

One thing occurs to me - the potassium and sodium in a person's body need to be in balance. If it's out of balance (more sodium than potassium) it can make tears/mucus taste saltier.

What would make it go out of balance though?

I am drinking all that I normally drink lately. And more water...

And the burning kind of has the sting of something that feels like heartburn, but it isn't...

G.E.R.D. - Google it.

Going out on a limb here--are we talking snot? Occasionally the inside of my nose gets irritated and will burn. Most likely it's from running and bicycling when I wipe my nose with my sleeve or glove. I either just deal with it or if I remember, I'll stuff some Blistex up there. Compared to all the other aches and pains that come with triathlon training, this isn't even on the radar!
