freakofnature -> Transformative Change- Nuance? McCain to Pick Leiberman??? (7/31/2008 4:42:38 PM)

And the fall of the republican party continues. Is it true that McCain picks Lieberman as a running mate?

McCain's new strategy

From Political Radar story:

Part of the calculus now is how his VP choice will further sharpen that message. There is significant support among top McCain advisers that he make a "transformative" pick who would change the Republican Party -- someone who would appeal to moderate Republicans and Democrats.

This pick would be someone who, like McCain, has taken the unpopular stands, made the hard calls and stood firm on principle.

A person who fills that bill, these advisers say, is Joe Lieberman.

Lieberman, an Independent Democrat, flatly denied his interest to ABC's Ron Claiborne earlier this month, but McCain is now seriously considering him as that "transformative" pick, sources tell ABC News.

First off, look at the source.

Second, McCain knows if he selected Lieberman if would further alienate his base and it wouldn't help with Democrats since Lieberman angered most of them when he became an independent.

Who Political Radar or ABC News?

I have heard this bandied about before, but if McCain did this, I think it would be the final flush before his campaign went swirling down the drain.

You're probably right, but I still can't fully rule out McCain picking Lieberman as his VP.

I think McCain will always trend to unconventional thinking, and if Lieberman is his man, no amount of paid consultants will talk him out of going with him.

As for the posted article suggesting Tom Ridge, I think he would truly destroy any chances McCain has for election. The former's pro-choice beliefs may draw in moderate voters to the GOP side, but would enrage Christian-right voters and likely sway most to go with Bob Barr, or perhaps not vote at all.

Either way, very bad news for McCain.

I'm hoping he picks him.

It's not going to happen, though.

My sense now (having been rejected by Bobby Jindal) is he will go with Pawlenty, and adopt the new campaign slogan, McCain/Pawlenty, now even whiter!

It would not surprise me one bit for McCain to pick Lieberman. His campaign can probably see that pro-life conservatives are more afraid of the damage Obama can do, "sucking the brains out of babies" than him picking a pro-choice former democrat as running mate. In other words, McCain feels he already has pro-life conservatives in his pocket. And he's right, whether some of you want to admit it or not. Don't vote for him or don't vote at all and Obama gets elected and you'll be guilty of slaughtering billions and billions of precious little innocents. Their blood will be on your hands.

Lieberman is pro-choice - he's rated 0% by the nrlc.org (not sure what you meant about picking a pro-life former democrat - if you weren't talking about Lieberman, sorry & nevermind). And if McCain picks him as his VP, I think it would be a huge mistake on his part.

Peace and God bless,

I've been saying this for weeks now. McCain and Lieberman are joined at the hip. Although McCain may WANT Lieberman as a V.P. I don't think his campaign will let him choose anyone other than Romney. Given McCain's age and the stress of being a President, (and of course, the fact that he will be a one-term president at best) it would be the best way to "back door" the Republican's real choice for president.

Jhud -> RE: Transformative Change- Nuance? McCain to Pick Leiberman??? (8/3/2008 6:52:37 PM)

Just to be clear, Leiberman is not a 'former' Democrat - he is still a Democrat, albeit one of the few remaining that are to the right of Kieth Olberman on a few issues - and so judged less of a Democrat - but he is still a Democrat and there is no way he will be the running mate.

To my knowledge, Lieberman is still member of the Dem caucus, but officially an independent. There are also heavy rumors that he will address the RNC convention as a featured speaker.

I would be surprised if McCain picked him as his running mate, but not too surprised.

Leiberman obviously wouldn't be the first Democrat to address the convention - but if he were selected to be VP, there may as well not be a Republican convention.

todd_t -> RE: Transformative Change- Nuance? McCain to Pick Leiberman??? (8/3/2008 9:30:29 PM)

My guesswork regarding who McCain will pick as VP is ping-ponging all over the place.

The smart money still says Romney will be his man, but I would not be shocked if McCain's final selection is from out of left field - kind of like Eric Cantor from Virginia.

The only problem with Cantor, however, is that he's an unknown. In fact, I had never heard of the man before yesterday when rumors of McCain vetting him surfaced in the news.

But at the risk of repeating myself, I would not be very surprised if McCain took Lieberman as his guy.

I guess we'll see how it all shakes out.

Speculation was that both Obama and McCain would announce before the Olympics, but that time window is almost closed. The games start on Friday.
