Anyone have any suggestions on a nice vacation that I could take by myself? I've been trying to take a vacation for a whole year, but seeing as how all of my girlfriends are getting married and are moving out of state (or are already gone), planning a good vacation with my friends is out of the question. I've finally just decided I'll go by myself, but I'm a bit nervous. I've never vacationed solo before. I've looked into going on a cruise, but they charge you for two occupants. I'd like to do something all-inclusive, but I'm running out of ideas. Any suggestions?

I'll probably end up saying what ever else has prior to my post, or reitterating the simplistics but I often do travel alone for work and/or pleasure. I usually give my route of passage (directions, where I'm staying, etc) to a family member on the off chance something does happen. First thing I do if I drive, is lock my doors as soon as I get in. I carry my Gerber at all times, which does have a sharp edge 'just in case'. If I fly, I don't always make myself look approachable; the demenier changes a bit, more cautious of my surroundings and if I see one person more than 4 times within view I tell someone. Weird, but it's just a thought since we see so many in airports. Never wear pony tails when traveling either, easy target to grab and pull down and catch you completely off guard.
Always leave lights on in the hotel, and even the TV on when gone. Gives the appearance that you left someone home rather than coming home to no one. And of course, always be on your guard! Pepper spray comes in handy too if neccesary.

I recently went to Minneapolis for 4 days. Not sure where you're located, but it was nice. Even drove the 6 hours too!

If you are concerned about crime the UK and Europe are lovely places for a woman to travel by herself. I did a lot of travelling when I was young - a lot of hostelling. Had a great time...much safer than the US. Canada also has a low crime rate. Same is true of many Asian cities.
You could take a tour to any of these but it is much cheaper to get a rail pass etc and do it on your own. Ask your travel agent. If you could give us a clue as to what you are interested in we might be in a better position to help.

If this is your first trip alone, you might not want to go for a really long time - maybe a few days to a week. I would also plan to go somewhere where there are lots of things that you can do on your own. Make sure that your hotel room is safe, vary your coming and going - those kinds of things are importnat. You might also want to take a vacation that is kind of close to someone that you know - that way you can plan to meet with someone that you know for lunch or dinner at least one day on the vacation. You also might arrange to check in with someone near the end of each day; that way you have someone to talk over things with. I personally like to journal when I'm alone or turn my time alone into a retreat time with the Lord.
My first vacation on my own was to the Grand Canyon. At the time I was living clear across the country. I stayed near the rim of the canyon - and since I like to take photographs - I did that and also found structured things to do while I was there. I was petrified the first day, but then I started to relax. I spent half of the trip alone, and for the second half, I drove to LA to visit a friend. For me, ths was good; it gave me a taste of what it was to be alone, while at the same time, allowed me to spend a little time with someone that I knew too.
If you aren't used to doing things alone, you might want to try to do some things alone before you go on vacation. Try going to the movies alone, going to a restaurant alone, to a museum - going for a drives alone. I liked learning how to do things alone - and although I prefer to be with people most of the time, it was very freeing for me.

I've flown to and from Mexico by myself and never had any problems. Only problem in flying back from Bulgaria on my own basically, was that I went out one door, and my ride was waiting at a different door, and neither of us had cellphones. But I feel perfectly comfortable travelling by myself. If I have to do it at night, I always park near the door and/or near a street lamp.

Good advice for sure! I tend to be aware of my surroundings too. It has to do with where I grew up, you had to always be aware of what was going on around you. This has worked out to the good when traveling as well.

I travel alone very frequently and for the most part I am focused on doing one thing and pretty much ignore everyone around me. I make sure not to put myself into dangerous situations, and just do my own thing. The main problem I have is the flight.. Seems as though I'm always seated next to a creepy old man lol. That's when my ipod comes in handy :)
