Overall, I think public displays of affection are beautiful. What could be more affirming than a loved one showing the world how wonderful you are or you being given the opportunity to show the person how highly you think of them. A couple kissing, a parent embracing a child, friends hugging...all bring a smile to my face. It can be uncomfortable though if it is overtly sexual. By that I mean when a couples actions cause me to think they would be best advised to get a hotel room. Sudden

I think they are great provided they are by or with someone that you are married to or in a relationship with and they aren't too risque or rude. That should be left for other venues. I also think that it's good to have physical interaction like a quick kiss or hugs in front of your family or with your family to show them a healthy relating to one another. How do children ever know what is healthy or apporpriate if we don't model it to them?

To add to my previous post: It also depends on whether the display is one of affection or one of lust. I have seen several of the latter.

Public displays of affections should be simple (hand holding, hugging etc.) but not overt (french kissing etc.) At all times individuals must remember that they are being seen and their actions interpreted by others. There are some actions that are best left for private situations.

Let me put a little different spin on this if you don't mind. If I were in a relationship with someone that I loved, I would want him to hold my hand, give me hugs, and soft kisses out in public. I didn't have those things with my ex husband, so think it would be nice if the man that God sends my way, would want to show the world that I was his girl, and he was proud of that fact. But I do agree with other posters, no deep kisses or overt sexual touches out in public.

It's okay to kiss your spouse goodbye or hello as well as a girlfriend or boyfriend that's okay too. Holding hands while walking is okay. I have seen public displays of affection that went too far that was borderline sexual. Ask this - would you want your kids to see that? I saw a young couple in line at a store who were behind a father and his two kids. The girl was wearing a revealing shirt and shorts. She proceeded to put her arms around her boyfriend shoulder and they started french kissing while in line. The two kids who were no more than 5 or 6 started mimiking the couple. The father made them stop. Now that is improper public display of affection.

We had to park about 4 or 5 blocks away from the waterfront. On the way back to the car we were walking behind a group of several young folk, either late hs or early college age. Everyone else was talking and not really paying attention to what was going on. The trailing couple of the kids ahead of us, the guy had his arm around her, hand on the small of her back. I went back to talking with our friends. When I looked up a couple of minutes later to check for the street we had to turn at, the guy's hand was in her bikini bottoms, up to the wrist. Public street with a lot of people walking around in broad day light. Fortunately, that was where we turned off down the block to go to the car and no one else from our group even noticed. That was what I refered to earlier as a "public display of lust."

I like seeing public displays of affection that are conducted in a testeful not disgraceful manner. Holding hands, a kiss.......nothing lengthy.... a touch is all good and shows the world how two people feel about each other. Vulgarity of any kind is not a display of affection rather a display of lust. Knowing the difference is being a wise and mature enough person to know the difference!

It's really sad in this day and age that people will display innappropriate forms of affection. You can write a book covering a years worth of IPDOA (innapropriate public displays of affection). All I can say to those people is go get a room!!

Holding hands is fine but if I see another person making out on the street or showing off for bystanders I start feeling queazy literally.
