Please forgive me if there is already a thread on this...I did a search and didn't find one.

I have had a facial hair issue for several years. It is irritating, but I just shave it. Most people are unaware that I have it.

However, the last couple of weeks shaving has gotten very painful. I tried a depilatory, and that only made my skin very sore without removing any hair. Waxing is equally ineffective.

Laser is expensive.

Any ideas?

If I have PCOS, it is very mild...besides, the hair would not go away even if that was the problem and it was treated.

I use really fine tipped tweezers and pluck them individually.
I've also taken really fine scissors (like nail scissors and cut as close to the skin as I could- that's probably the least irritating method I've used.

Unfortunately such a job with tweezers would be 6 times as painful (I know, I've tried), make me cross-eyed (from looking in a mirror) and take 6 or 7 hours. It's not like there's just a few.

I've wondered if perhaps I'm developping a sensitivity to the stuff they put on razors...

It's not so painful if you rub an ice cube on the area first. And if you spend an hour or two per day for 3 nights, you'd get it all done, and then only have to "maintain", which would probably only take less than half an hour per day.

I spent a couple of long sessions on mine, and now I just do 5-10 mins twice a day. Btw I use a magnifying mirror, makes it much easier.

Shallbe, I was thinking about this just the other day... electric razors are much less irritating, but they don't last nearly as long.

Here's what I was wondering about... I was watching Oprah (didn't have a choice) and she was interviewing families where the dad, well, became a woman. One was quite beautiful. So it occurred to me... what did they do about the facial hair?!?!? Are there horomones? I also had PCOS for many years but I believe it's gone and the hormones seem to be back to normal. Still the problem remains.

Ok, so I showed the area to my oldest daughter last night and she said it didn't look like there was any infection to make it painful. We decided to try putting cortaid on it.

It worked! This morning it was much better and I was able to shave it.

Yay for Cortaid! Usually I just shave it. I've found the razors with the cushy strip works better (usually they are soap or a gel of some sort). Glad you found something that worked though!

It can be a nuisance to deal with though.

I bleach my stache periodically, and I have a few chin hairs that I pluck. It sounds like you are dealing with a bigger area than that. I'm glad the cortaid worked for you!

Yeah, I don't mind shaving, it's just that it was becoming so painful. Then I realized that it was not hurting on one side...that's what clued me in to the fact that I must just have a local irritation.

The cortaid has completely cleared it up.

Facial hair--I am starting to have to deal with this. Fortunately I live in the upper midwest where people tend to ignore this sort of thing. I think I will go for the bleaching option if my stache gets any bigger.

My problem is I just plain can't see them! My eyes are changing daily. Even my reading glasses can't pick them up well. I think lighting is also an issue too. kd

Those little personal mini shavers that they advertise for both men and women are great. They don't irritate, cut, and they are about $12. I do it like once a week and thats it. It doesn't make the hair grow back darker either.

I have some facial hair but since I'm a redhead, no one really notices it but me. Some medicine, which doctors give to women in menopause, will also cause the facial hair issue. Most of the women I know use tweezers to remove it or wax. I hope that you find relief soon.

Treating PCOS will actually help the hair stop growing. Have you heard of "Vaniqua"? or whatever that prescription hair removal cream is?

No, but with what happened with my face with just the OTC stuff, I'd be afraid to try it, lol! Having hair is better than NOT having skin!

I started having this problem too after I had the Norplant birth control when I was a teen. I have been dealing with it for a long time. I started by plucking but that took too long and didn't get it all. Them I tried lotion hair removers but they irritated my already acne irritated skin. So finally I just started shaving. Now I have to shave everyday. Or at least every other day if I don't go out in public. If I don't do it that often I could be considered a man. It is that bad now. Oh, well!!! I am French and we are meant to be hairy. lol
