Getting back to the issue at hand, here's a first: for months, political observers have noted how neither Obama nor McCain have been able to crack the 50% mark in nation-wide polling.

But Obama just did it; according to today's Gallup tracker, he's now up on McCain by 8 points (50-42).

the truth is that SOME of the Republicans are not very welcoming to others.

I really don't think I"m alone in this. There's been probaly studies ad nauseum

Back to OP.

I have been watching CSPan because they just play the speeches,

don't have all the "coverage" from the pundits.

I'll be glad when it is over so they can shut up!!!

all of us have seen insurmountable leads diminish, but if the RNC receives fair media coverage, then there will be some diminishing on that lead. for McCain to win, there will have to be within 2 come november. i think that is possible.

Well my personal impression and what I took from last night Convention and was strongly sticked in my mind were the faces of the veterans. As a 3rd generation military daughter veterans in the USA always touches my heart very much so. That is a very strong conflict I have in my heart about USA, because I love the soldier warrior spirit and those who fought/fight although myself cannot touch no real weapon at all...but I just cannot agree at all with the war going on, because to me was it was a wrong war to go for it, still is happening and the rest is history.

Plus there is no way to forget after become emotional, the huge huge debt reality going on because of wars and keep up with war arsenal and etc and I am very much responsable about debts. I want soldiers to come home and rest for a while with their families and be ready and rest until a really really serious conflict comes up. I want the soldeirs to come more than anything else.

Still, the veterans and military is a touching bunch of people I do take to my heart and when we are at airports and travelling there I see many comming and going and can thank those I meet myself, waiting for flights etc They sure come in many colors, parties, walking of lives and so many faces, I know.

That was not fair starting the comemoration with so many veterans!

Still I have no party affiliation or candidates between those who are running.

Almost an exact duplication of 1988. Don't hang your hat on it for too long.

No lead is insurmountable. I just thought it was interesting that someone finally made 50% in a national poll.

It reflects that undecideds are finally beginning to get off the fence.

funny as it is, when they do change their minds, AGAIN, (lol), well, they are only proven as undecided.

Well, as the political center and undecideds begin to take a stand I think you'll finally begin to see some separation between Obama and McCain in the numbers.

But on the other hand, they could be back in a virtual tie within a week.

I do agree with those that say Gallup polls are really a snapshot in time, and not reliable predictors for the future. This election is all going to come down to the swing states (again).

I do wonder, however, if the GOP's recent, intense overselling of Sarah Palin may backfire on them with voters.

the last person to do that.....was......

George W. Bush...in the only poll that really matters....the U.S. Election of 2004.

Won with 50.7% of the vote.

First to win with over 50% of the vote in a Presidential Election since 1988.

overselling?

who gave you the idea of the "overselling" going on over Sarah.......(as if there isn't any going on over Obama)....

if anything, sarah is going to "connect" with voters....she's a REAL person....with a REAL family.....

and, isn't going to have to "reinvent" herself 20 million times before she finds the "sarah palin" that will appeal to voters......

Fred Thompson is speaking right now, Lieberman will be up next.

Watch C-SPAN if you can, they just show the speakers with no commentary. I leave the punditry till I turn on the radio the next day.

Thanks for the advice.
I was getting annoyed that the commentators kept interrupting the speeches.
I was watching ABC and I was thinking to myself, 'I am not watching to hear YOU guys talk but Thompson and Lieberman!"
It really makes me wonder why they didn't just air the entire speeches with no interruptions and save the commentary till the END of the speech.

Oh well, the parts I did get to watch were very good.
Thompson's speech was very moving, while Lieberman's practical and reasoned speech was very effective in highlighting McCain's strengths against Obama, with the results being Obama came up short.

Um, maybe it has something to do with the skull-ringing degree of spin going on at the RNC convention last night...

GOP party faithful and apologists alike are wildly upholding Palin as a divine cross between Joan of Arc, Carol Brady, and Nanook of The North.

For her sake, I hope not. She doesn't have the time.

My nephew works in ST.Paul and it took him 2 hrs to get to my house.

He wants to join the protests, but I said no leave them windbags to theirselves.

He was like Aunty they could'nt possibly represent me, they were all old balding white men.

I said yep

The Republican Party

The rich and their minions!

I guess by that logic the wealthy Barak couldn't represent white America - so much for MLK's dream.

Hey jhud; don't encourage her.

May I make a suggestion?

I suggest that rather than fall into the trappings of tracydolls and let her hijack every single thread that talks about the Republicans we rather just ignore her rants and stay on topic.

I would much rather discuss the RNC than the ravings of someone who is obviously just trying to play games and has nothing serious to contribute to the discussion.

May I ask how talking about poll numbers regarding NObama is getting back to this issue at hand?

FYI: This is the RNC Convention Thread.

Would the numbers be as meaningless if they were reversed, and McCain was at 50%?

Actually I thing you need to worry about how these constant attacks against Palin and her family will backfire against the Democrats.

People are really getting angry about this and not just Republicans or Conservatives.

You mean sort of like how all the Democrats who initially said that NObama wasn't ready to be president during the primaries all of a sudden were spouting how great a president he will be?

Oh wait, that's right, he's gained sooooo much experience now running his campaign and managing all those campaign funds and employees. That's a great practice run to get you ready to run a country.
