How does this compare with Obama's church?

Brief Excerpt:
The church runs a number of ministries providing help to poor neighborhoods, care for children in need, and general community services. But Pastor Kalnins has also preached that critics of President Bush will be banished to hell; questioned whether people who voted for Sen. John Kerry in 2004 would be accepted to heaven; charged that the 9/11 terrorist attacks and war in Iraq were part of a war "contending for your faith;" and said that Jesus "operated from that position of war mode."

OOoo... the Huffington Post. Now I KNOW I will get the truth!

I can see the dizzying left-hand spin just the brief excerpt you provided.

I withhold any further comments until the Wasilla AG website is back up. It kept crashing due to so many hits, so they took it down.

It doesn't compare at all, unless one finds a standard Christian church ominous in some way, which I suspect the Huffington post would.

Is the paper bad?....I just did a search and found the article....No clue about the paper though.

The pastor seems nutty though....some weird things in that article.

I've known church members critical of Bush before...according to Palin's pastor, though, they'd be banished to hell. I guess I would be curious to see the context of those statements from the pastor.

The Huffington Post is an awful source. ON par with the Daily Kos. End of story.

I'm not a pentecostal, but what he believe seems like pretty mainstream amongst Pentecostals.

As someone not familiar with that source, is there any particular reason it's bad? Has it been shown to have false journalism?..Or just differing opinions? ....?

jfwink -> RE: Palin's Controversial Church (As Crazy As Obama's?) (9/5/2008 2:11:23 AM)

The Huffington Post doesn't even pretend to be balanced. I would guess just reading through a few articles from the site will show that.

Its consistently a very liberal site by intention. Adriana Huffington is a big supporter of Democrats.

I guess we'll know more soon, because the media is now sure ot try and dig up anything and everything they can about Palin, including her church background.

But, of course, if they criticize her church background, that brings up the comparisons to Obama's church. ...That oculd backfire as Palin is a VP candidnate and Obama the Prez nominee...it'd be more damaging to Obama if they went at it over church affiliations and pastors.

Still, I'd be curious to know more about it.

Official Statement Concerning Governor Palin

Governor Sarah Palin did attend Wasilla Assembly of God since the time she was a teen ager. She and her family were a part of the church up until 2002. Since that time she has maintained a friendship with Wasilla Assembly of God and has attended various conferences and special meetings here. This June, the Governor spoke at the graduation service of our School of Ministry, Master’s Commission Wasilla Alaska.

We have had some inquires into Governor Palin’s beliefs. We do know that Gov Palin is a woman of integrity. She is a servant of the people, she is a strong leader. As for her personal beliefs, Governor Palin is well able to speak for herself on those issues.

As Alaskans we are excited about our Governor being selected as the nominee for Vice President. As residents of Wasilla, we are ecstatic about one of our own being thrust to the national forefront. However, as a church, it is not appropriate for us to endorse any one candidate over another. As believers, we are reminded in 2 Peter 2.13 that we are to submit to those in authority. 1 Timothy 2.1-2 tells us pray for those in authority. This we will do no matter who is elected. We wish the best to Governor Palin, and Senator McCain, as well as to Senator Obama and Senator Biden.

May God continue to bless America.

Blah...

Acts 5:29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

Really sad that the church would rather remain silent then take a stand against evil... For what? Tax status....

Site is up...

From the brief snippets of info. and quotes about the pstor, he reminds me a little bit of Pat Robertson (whom I think has a good heart mostly, but is a bit nutty and off-the-wall at times) of the 700Club and CBN. I'd be interested in learning more.

tracydolls -> RE: Palin's Controversial Church (As Crazy As Obama's?) (9/5/2008 3:00:46 AM)

They have a lot of his sermons on youtube.

He sounds like most every rightwing church in America. Fits right in with Pat Robertson, James Dobson, etc.

Not surprising to me.

So this is the church she left for the one that calls itself a "community church" (presumably non denominational)? She left it in 2002 and this is what they're digging up?

EStan -> RE: Palin's Controversial Church (As Crazy As Obama's?) (9/5/2008 8:52:16 AM)

Does this mean she doesn't get to throw her former pastor under a bus for her own political gain?!!

SwedishCovenant -> RE: Palin's Controversial Church (As Crazy As Obama's?) (9/5/2008 9:00:03 AM)

It means that this particular campaign tactic is one the Republicans threw themselves into, wholeheartedly, just a few months ago, and now whine like dogs with their tails under rocking chairs when the same practice is applied to Republicans.

The GOP INVITED this sort of scrutiny. Why act surprised when the offer is accepted?

Grab the popcorn, this next two months is going to be epic.

Until I hear her Pastor screaming from the pulpit "cursing" America....Until I hear her Pastor going on racist rants....

there's no comparison between the two. at all....

Of course, when the HP is critical of Obama, you quote it as a credible source.

New rules. Criticize America or white people - bad church. Criticize liberals and condemn them to hell - good church. I'll keep that in mind.

The Huffington Post... [:D] [:'(]

Sorry I'm not buying that the OP didn't know anything about that particular source...
