No matter how long we've been single, or in what season of life we are in, I believe that there are experiences that we can share that will help other singles who are coming after us. In the spirit of the "older" (by this I mean having more knowledge and experience) teaching the "younger" - or to put it in modern day language - mentoring - what piece of advice can you give to other singles? What lessons have you learned that can be helpful to others? Everyone who is single, those who are now married but were single are invited to participate. I especially would love to hear from single parents and those who are called to be single permanently as well!

I'll start - I've learned that in some cases, if I embrace loneliness - admit to myself and to God that I am lonely - that often it will dissipate quite quickly and God will comfort me.

I have to agree on that one! I'm probably not the most seasoned in this issue, being since I'm only going to be 20[:)], but I have found that if I get the focus off of me and my problems and focus on helping someone else, it really helps me to not get the "Woe is me" attitude going on.
Another thing that has really helped me is getting involved helping as a leader at my youth group, to be able to pour into those teens lives has been so AMAZING!![:D][:D] One really cool thing is being single I am able to focus on my college work better, and I know one day God will bring me the guy He has for me, in His timing, not mine!

I don't have time to write a long posts because I'm studying, but the one thing I've learned about life as a single person, and I'm sure I would have learned it whether single or married is that (wow, match this for the longest run on sentence here and I'm only half way done), whatever I'm going through, I learned to take on the attitude that "this too shall pass", whew....breath.... LOl.

I learn to really really enjoy the good times because I know that they don't last, and I learned to be patient about the bad times because that too shall pass. It's not easy, but somehow that little shift in perspective helps.

Something I've learned (and I've always been single, having never dated), and something that really applies to everything in life, is that God has us where we are for a particular reason. That reason may be to focus on Him, to grow in our faith, to spend time doing what we can only do as a single, or whatever, but we need to live in that moment and try to find out what it is God has us here for.

I know that personally if I were married right now, it would be very difficult to manage a full-time job, help my mother, and sing with a quartet. So, I'm enjoying my life as it is now, because were it to change with a marriage, it could effect the things I'm doing.

I've learned a few things I am sure, but one came to mind when I read your post rgod. It is this...I've tried to date because all of the "emptiness" that I felt was a result of being single and I realized that most of that "emptiness" wasn't because I was single, but because I wasn't drawing from Jesus. I wasn't loving on the Lover of my Soul. I wasn't finding my comfort, my source, my strength, my joy, my love in my Lover, but looking for it elsewhere and one of those ways by dating. Simply, another person is never going to be what Jesus is meant to be in our lives.

For single moms, I'd point out that in Isaiah it says that God will be a husband and He will be a father to the fatherless. Everything you need, He will provide. He provides for the birds in the trees - how much more will he provide for us? And when you're exhausted but the kids are demanding your attention, or are stressed out by having to do it all on your own, remember that you are NOT all on your own. God is always with you. He will never leave you. Go to Him for rest, comfort, and peace.

And, for singles in general, be content in your current circumstances like Paul says. God has a purpose for us and His good purpose for us will glorify His kingdom. It's not always fun, but even in struggles, trials, etc., the Bible tells us to consider it all joy (James 1:2) when we encounter those things and it will produce endurance and increase our faith. Everything that happens in our lives happens for a reason, whether we'll ever know what that reason is on this side of eternity.

On other thing I'd add that goes with being content in your circumstances, is that when you are content and you're following your passion/heart that God has placed in you, you may well meet your future spouse while you're doing that passion. For example, if your passion is in missions, you may just meet your future spouse on the mission field. You can't put God in a box. He can do anything.

I have to agree with you on that one! I always used to think I needed to be on the LOOKOUT for a guy at all times, but now I know I just need to bloom where I am planted and pursue the passions God has placed in my heart, and I will find the right guy! I love the saying that "When you dance with God, He will let the right man cut in" I want to let God lead me where He wants me to go and I know I will be okay! I couldn't have put it any better than you did!

I love that quote I wrote it down right after I read it......

I always think of the saying that everything has a time and a season. Right I'm single in this time. And maybe one reason is I need to become closer to God or maybe it is not God's time for me to have a husband yet. But whatever the reason I'm trusting God ......

And that's exactly what He wants you to do too, as hard as it can be at times. I love that quote, jesuschick!
