Well no, I was a babe in arms when Dwight D ran for president. But I am worried abut this incarnation that is in the Gulf of Mexico. It's a matter of degrees how bad it is going to affect me, but I am on the dirty side of this storm, northwest of the city of Houston, and after it hits the coast it is supposed to take a fight turn and go right past me.

Of course its got me thinking... Why is it that when a hurricane is projected to come anywhere near NOLA the media is all over it, but one like this barely gets a mention?

Here's what I'm looking at this weekend. We're prepared and ready to ride it out.

Because Texans aren't going to get trapped in their own city and then blame the government for it.

I have folks from Galvaston; for some reason my relatives like high winds and torrential rains.

Ben, they (media) know most of us folks in Texas have enough sense to leave w/o being told.
Besides, they think it'll only hit a bunch of cows.

People who take care of themselves are not news.

Dare I say...skin color? In other words, if your area was devestated by a hurricane...would Jesse Jackson come?

How many politicians in your area were scamming the federal government for years using the funds targeted for hurricane protections, tog et them elected with welfare programs? They got caught and had to blame someone.

Mississippi coastal areas were devastated as much or more than NO, but you hardly heard a peep out of the media about them and their largely forgotten condition. So, no, I don't think race was a deciding factor. 'Sides, Texas ain't all lily white, and, as far as I know, it never was.

Every weather report here in Los Angeles has had stories DAILY for the past weeks on Gustav, Ike, and any other tropical depression or storm in the gulf. And its not just once a day either it in EVERY weather report!

And we don't get hurricanes here. Thank God for the Coriolis effect!

Note to burst your bubble with mere facts or anyhting, but four of the headline stories on cnn.com this morning concern Hurricane Ike - a subject second in popularity only to 911 remembrance, with five headline articles.

CNN network news and all three of the major networks either led their morning newscasts with extensive coverage of Ike and its expected course, or had it as their second story.

CBS Radio - I listen to it on the way to work - led with 911 remembrance, but Ike's projected path was the #2 story.

Just a question - if you;re not listening to the news outlets from which 95% of us get our information, just what 'media' IS it that you listen to which is letting you down so badly, and why do you keep listening to it?

It is all over the news here. Updates are hourly on the weather channel.

This morning coverage of the evacuation of special populations and interviews with folks in the path of the storm were on NBC.

More than barely a mention.

I'm concerned about Ike too. I have friends and loved ones in harm's way.

Perhaps I'm not seeing the overall coverage because I am concentrating on the local news at this time, who are being rather specific as to where Ike is going and what it is to affect locally. And I'm speaking of the televised media in particular. So, thank you for letting me know that I am mistaken.

I was talking with my Mom about being prepared for this, she asked what would we do? Having grown up and spent a great deal of my life in the SF bay area where she still lives, I told her it is the same basic preparation for a hurricane that you take for an earthquake. The only difference really is that we know how much time we have before a storm hits, but you don't have that warning with a quake.

As far as Jesse Jackson, we don't need him! We have Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee on hand.

I hate Ike. I'm on the dirty side of the storm and it appears Ike's moving east a bit of the track... possibly a Rita Redux. The storm surge is already being felt along the coast here.

As far as NOLA, after Bobby Jindal handled things very well with Gustav the media moved on.

I noticed that...

As for the track of this storm, there are more than a few models that take the eye very close to right over my head.

Ben,

I will be praying for you and StephK.

Hey...anyone that can survive S. F. Bay area, is a survivor

How come you are not leaving? If I missed that in your post, forgive, please.

btw. we got hurricane force winds up here in Grass Valley (2+ hours from S.F.) last winter and power went out and the neighbor's tree fell across my house when I was in a dark house, in the shower. The whole house shook. It was pretty scary...I thought it was over.

sorry...didn't mean to make you more firghtened

Falling trees are very dangerous. Most of the deaths with Gustav here was due to trees falling on houses.

Well... no where to go really. Depending on what the forecast looks like tomorrow night I will have the girls at least go spend the night at a friend's home, a brick house. We are in a double wide mobile home.

I been looking at the trees around the house...

Thank you for the prayers, for both us and Steph. The track keeps shifting to the east, making it worse for her.

I will continue praying for both of you and I know you both will be alright.

I usually don't like to give advice but don't you think, Ben, all of you should go to that brick house if it continues coming your way....? Please....

That's why I used the disclaimer "at LEAST the girls". I'd go too if it looked like I needed to.
