I got a message from Ben on my voicemail this afternoon!! He and his family are okay!
They are without power and water, but the house is fine. There was major damage around them, but Ben says God's blessings were on them big time.
It may be WEEKS before they get power though, and cell phone reception is spotty right now.
He wants us all to know that he loves us and he will be back in touch with us all when he can.

I know he is thankful for all the love and prayers. (((((Everyone)))))

God is surely good!

I'm so relieved that he and his family are okay. Guess they're in for some extended "camping" time.

I don't know if any of you are following what happened in the Midwest due to the remnants of Ike. Most of OH lost power due to the storm. Many people had there homes crushed by trees. I know my daughter is just going back to school today (the storm came through on Sunday afternoon) Most of Cincinnati and Columbus are expected to get there power back today. We didn't lose power, but I did have to replace a fence because a tree went through it. Then, I went and helped our neighbors cut up a fallen tree because it had blocked in both cars. The winds here hit 75 mph, which is something we're not used to.

I am back at work nowd, ah A/C and hot water. Still don't have power at my apartment but luckily for us down here the cool front has made it at least bearable. I was fortunate enough that my apartment was not damaged and is still liveable.

Glad to hear that those of you in IKE's path are doing OK (as well as you can), and were not hurt. I have some family in the Dallas area, and it was a long weekend waiting to see what would happen with them. Thank God that they only got a little wind, and rain. They are now working to help people who evacuated.

I posted what's underneath in my PFY thread and wanted to share it here also after I make one comment. I was not under any sort of evacuation order. Since I live in a mobile home many of you here were encouraging me to take the family to a more solid house. Trust that I would have done that in an instant if there were anything to endanger my wife and grand daughter. And I truly thank those who did so for their concern. Christian love will do that and for that I thank Him.

I also want to comment on those who were under an evacuation order and didn't leave. I might not have either if I felt my house were able to withstand the winds and storm surge and if I were prepared enough to take care of myself after the storm. Would you like to live in a school gym for weeks at a time on cots with no privacy, dependent on a bureaucratic government agency for your every need? To scramble for a hotel room that are in short supply if available at all and then have to deal with the paperwork involved all the while not being able to know the condition of your property and being far from your job that may or may not still be there? Would you want to let the mildew and mold grow into and major health concern in your home, or would you rather want to be there to deal with the water damage before it becomes a major hazard? Some folks who stayed may indeed be regretting that decision. But in spite of the fact of some of what's been reported of hot tempers at some gas lines I have seen much more evidence of neighbor helping neighbor, loaves of bread being brought to those who do not have by those who do. I am sure that those who may have stayed and lost what they have are being taken care of by those they live near rather than the government.

And speaking of the government... I was listening to the news on the radio Sunday evening and heard Homeland Security secretary Chertoff after he blew into town after the storm passed. He had the audacity to thank Houston's mayor White and the county's judge Ed Emmett for "finally (I believe that was the word) stepping up to the plate". EXCUSE ME? Those two had been at the plate since several day s before the storm hit! That on top of the report from Congressman Culberson from a center of first responders where they had RUN OUT OF WATER AND WERE EATING THEIR LAST MEAL and FEMA was no where in sight with food or water for them so the plea went out to the community to please bring water especially! And the community responded much faster than FEMA did. I almost threw the radio into a puddle of water after hearing that bag of wind from Washington...

Anyway - Here's my report;

Hey everybody!

It's Friday morning and I'm here at work with the internet connection. Power came on at home last night at 5PM, and along with it the water. It was nice to have a hot soaking bath...

We survived without any damage. Several big tree limbs fell in the yard and had to be cut up, there was lots of tree debris covering the yards that is being raked up and brought to the burn pile to get rid of. Much devastation in the neighborhood, some homes escaping like we did, others with trees in them, one with at least three trees crashed into it. Power lines down in many places. It was Florida Light and Power who's trucks and crews did the repair around us. I guess they take the roses when it comes to dealing with getting the lights back on.

We hunkered down Friday night in the family room after securing some tin roofing across the sliding door that opens onto the deck out back. Felt that was the safest place to be as far as trees overhead. There are none there. Power had gone out about 12:30 Sat morning and with it the water too. After taking stock of what damage there was and wasn't after the wind died down Sat afternoon it was time to set up the campground and the propane stove. Camping on one's front porch - imagine that...

Heard a report Sunday that WalMart was open. How's that for capitalism at work? The one thing we were short on was bread so made the trek into town and on the way heard there was water and ice being given away at the high school so stopped by there. Water only, no ice. WallyWorld had plenty of milk and other staples, but no hamburger and no bread and no ice. Wednesday went into town again looking for bread (ice was now being supplied by the neighbor's brother who works for an ice company) and found French bread and sandwich rolls! And they had gotten in a shipment of generators. Got home and after talking with Lynn we decided to go ahead and charge a generator to keep the fridge working and maybe even get the television working. FEMA should reimburse for that as there is a medical reason to have power what with the C-Pap machine.

Yesterday we took Lynn into the doctor as her lymph nodes in her neck were severely swollen and painful. Hopefully just a virus and stress caused that. Got medication and a shot, and now that we have water again she can get the house clean and relieve the stress that not being able to keep the house to those impossible standards of hers. Finally got bread from the HEB store.

So all is well with us, but I can't get the picture of a family I saw on TV last night out of my mind. They were looking through the rubble of what was their neighborhood, looking for anything of what used to be their lives. We were truly blessed.

I read this at http://lonestartimes.com/ and can relate...

quote:

Even at its worst, I wasn’t scared by Ike… but I was impressed.

And I don’t think I’ll ever be able to hear about a powerful hurricane hitting Haiti or Cuba or El Salvador in quite the same way again.

I can’t imagine what it must be like to go through something like that while living in a tin/cardboard shack.

For me it is all becoming "normal" at a fairly rapid pace. I ask you to keep others, who lost so very much in your prayers. They need much more of His blessings in their lives right now.

I second that, I was extremely lucky. No damage and had running water, although extremely cold, and only lost power for 5 1/2 days which wasn't so bad since the nights after sunday were very cool. There are some out there with no home to get power back to.

boston.com/bigpicture is a really neat photo news story website. The other link was directly to the Ike album, but if you go to boston.com/bigpicture, there are albums of different subjects. The photos are magnificent.
