May I hear a variety of interpretations on this vision from the book of Revelation? Is it literal, figurative, past, future? What is the Preterist interpretation? Futurist, Historicist, Amill, etc?

Please keep comments to the '2nd trumpet' vision. What exactly is this prophecy talking about? When will it be? What will be its effect?

Being something of an "Apostolic Premillenialist" I only really have a basis to talk about the future-literal interpretation of the passage. That interpretation would be that John saw something that resembled a burning mountain that fell in the sea and killed a third of the animals in it. On a personal note, I would not be surprised to find out that it was a Nuclear missile or some kind of cosmological occurance that caused some kind of comet to fall in the Ocean. However, I don't think that finding out the specific identity of the "great mountain" is really that important.

Based on my range of study, you are going to get some very odd answers related to the sacking of Jerusalem, the propogation of Islam, the general consequences of an Empire falling, and God judging humanity's sin... add in a slightly odd tie-in with WWII, and you get the idea.

A great mountain could be an asteroid.

Let's take a typical Rocky Mountain mountain that's about 4,000 feet above its base which is about a mile and a half wide.

In cosmic terms, that would be a good chunk of rock, not exceedingly huge, but still tremendous.

Now the 2nd Trumpet desolation would not be that big, nor would the devastation be that total, but you can get the idea of what a huge chunk of material, burning because of its entry into the atmosphere at hypersonic speeds (something unknown in the prophet's time) and the devastation the Bible chronicles would result could actually happen.

There can be literal fulfillment to end-time prophecy.

Sometimes reality gets in the way of interpretation, so it is IGNORED. Some simple facts:

1. A nuke will not destroy a 3rd of all sea creatures and a 3rd of all ships.
2. A "great mountain" sized asteroid will not kill a 3rd of all creatures, it will kill ALL creatures!

Now, a SMALL asteroid may indeed a kill only a 3rd, but how does a "Great Mountain" get interpreted as a SMALL asteroid ? There are mountains, and then there are Great Mountains, but a rock, and a small one at that, cannot be called a Great Mountain.

This is, in my opinion, NOT a literal event. Besides, almost NOTHING in Revelation is literal, so why should this be an exception, especially, considering that a literal interpretation has the major flaw I point out above.

Interesting hermaneutic... care to substantiate? I will be one of the first to say that there is symbolism in the Book of Revelation (specifically because the book itself says that there are signs and symbols in it), however, the idea that "almost NOTHING in Revelation is literal" is a pretty big stretch to go for, IMO.

My main complaint with the Asteroid thing is that (A) an asteroid of any great size would leave a very large impact on the earth and quite possibly kill most of it's inhabitants, and (B) the very next judgement is that "A great star fell from heaven". However, I think that this will have a literal interpretation... at the very least, something big and on fire is going to fall into the Ocean and destroy a good chunk of whatever is in it.

The point of Revelation is to reveal, and God does that through Jesus to John. Symbols refer to Old Testament prophecies and are put in perspective.

For instance, we see the inception of the four spirits unleashed upon the world with the manner in which they are called out from the first four Seals. This revelation gives us more knowledge as to their function and the order in which they act so we can understand what God showed Zechariah.

The seven heads of the beast are explained and can be viewed as coming over time where at the end of this age five have already happened and the anti-Christ is the sixth. The seventh is relegated to a short time with the uprising which will happen at the end of the Millennium when Satan is unleashed from the Abyss.

Even the woman on the beast is explained which points again to Rome, one of the enemies of Israel... God succinctly paints a picture which captures the essence between the Roman Catholic Church with their mother-son worship system and the ruling Kings of Europe over which she had influence. God also portrays correctly the numerous inquisitions and persecutions the RCC has inflicted upon God's people. God even portrays the current state where secular Europe disdains the Roman Catholic Church and we ought to be reminded that a house divided against itself will not stand.

Even the ten crowns are explained as being ten kings who do not have a kingdom per se at the inception of the fourth terrible beast but become as kings when it is put together. And in Rev 13:2 John shows us that the first three beasts are included in the fourth which adds to the information we have in Daniel 7.

So to say that nothing in Revelation is literal is to miss a lot of information which is conveyed.

A great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea ... volcano. A huge eruption like Khrakatoa (sp).

Krakatoa... A volcano is an interesting thought, but the idea of being "cast into the sea" implies that it isn't there any more. So I don't think it is as strong a possibility, but it is possible.
