No, I know several others like that. One couple live in a motel room. She has cancer. He panhandles on one of the busy street corners. Another woman lives in a room above a booze can. She also panhandles.

About 15 years ago the Dallas Morning News did a whole spread on people who panhandle for a living. The reporter went undercover as a "street person" and realized that so many were panhandling and making a lot of money tax free. What was really interesting about the story is that the reporter had a great compassion for "homeless" people, and he was appalled at how people were taking advantage of the sympathy of passers by to make a pretty darn good living.
BTW, I realize that there are people who honestly have fallen on hard times or have some extenuating circumstances such as drug use or mental illness that lands them on the street. But there is definitely an element who has figured out it's not a bad racket.
So how do I handle that as a Christian? I just ask the Lord to give me wisdom and if I give someone something and they are misrepresenting themselves, I don't worry about. I try to keep focus on the Lord.
Case in point: I was in a major city in the U.S. and a woman was begging on the street. She was also singing hymns, and whether she was legit or not, I don't care. I believe I was supposed to give her what was in my wallet at the time, which happened to be a wad of cash. What's so funny is that I hardly ever carry cash, but I had a considerable amount that day and gave it all. She could have been as phony as a $3 bill, but it doesn't matter because I can take heart in the fact that the Holy Spirit was prompting me to do this.

I just wanted to say that, as a Brit, I had never heard of the word "panhandling" before I read this thread. We Brits just say "begging"!!
I had to look up "panhandling" on the net to see what the origins were!

Lisa, I agree with you. I figure I do what God tells me to do and if the person will misuse the money, well, that's between them and God.

we have a rite-aid drugstore on the corner of my block in charleston west virginia. There is a good bit of homeless,less fortunate people around in our town, and many times there will be someone panhandling for change in front. I dont mind so much but i am pretty skeptical that they have alcohol problems so usually i dont give em anything. For me it has more to do with their approach, which is usually pretty rude.
Now one time awhile back i went there for soda-pop and encountered a guy i had never seen before. He had quite a story, but his attitude and mannerisms were top notch, and he says he was hungry and missed the local soup kitchen meal. anyway, i told him id come right back and gave 6-8 boiled eggs,cornchips, two beers and a soda pop.
I spent quite a bit of time chatting with the guy, so long in fact we got run off by the cops. anyway i cant remember if we shook hands or not but i certainly wouldnt have minded at all.

Do I think not shaking a dirty person hand is right. No I don't
In the bible it talks about Leprosy, we have issues like aids and other conditons.
In the bible it says this:
Mark 1:41
Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing, he said. "Be clean"
42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured.
What I am saying Jesus touched someone with leprosy, we should follow His example. Have compassion.
I think the body of Christ needs to rethink about what would Jesus do. It's in the bible what He would do.
Would I shake a dirty person's hand, alot. I also have bought food for them. I don't give money because they may use it for reasons that could make things even worse.

I'm not much of a hand shaker anyway. After greeting time at church, I'm usually the one reaching in her purse for the hand sanitizer.
However, I do shake hands that are offered to me, then I sanitize.
