I have to be sick enough that I can't function properly when I am at home before I will cancel plans.

hmm.. I didn't mean to imply that I would simply have a bad day, just meant to say that it would have been bad had I gone in. I have a very sore throat, and and a very very upset tummy... and I would have been out of the classroom more than in it feeling like I do - if I was even 'allowed' to stay, plus I can't really talk very well today... so correcting/instructing the children would have been very very hard... I think it's irresponsible to go to work/school/chuch/etc... if you feel you might have something contagious too. Why should everyone around me get sick just because I don't like to miss work. =) My husband and I both got bronchitis (a very bad case of it) after a nurse at my doctor's office decided to come into work - coughing all over the place. Within 3 days we were both very very ill. I normally have to have a day where I pretty much am unable to function normally too Nicole. I've not been able to eat much today due to a very very upset tummy, and my throat really feels awful. Thus, I made the right decision. =) Still curious what others use as their requirement for missing/cancelling things though. =)

(((((((((Gina))))))))))) I hope you feel better soon. And yes, if I had tummy troubles like that I would cancel plans too. I am glad you were able to stay home today. Sounds like you need to rest and take it easy. I also don't like it when people who are contagious still go out if they have the option of staying at home. I usually end up sick from them. And if I don't end up sick someone else usually does.

yes... I get upset, and some of my coworkers think it's funny and that I'm just being a hypochondriac, but I hate it when they come in to work saying... "ugh, I don't feel so good" or any such thing. I question them on exactly what they have, and why they don't feel well. We're all friends there though, so it's no big deal if I am so unfortunate as to get sick and I say... " and it's all your fault!! =)"

I have lots of tummy troubles so if I stayed home cause of tummy troubles I would never leave the house. Me either. I seem to be especially sensitive to hormone changes so I always have some sort of tummy issue. If I'm not actively vomiting then I usually go to work.

So, how do you know if you're contagious?

I'm a panzy. If I'm feeling super lousy I usually called in. However, since I'm the boss now, I'm afraid I won't be able to do that.

Well, anything viral can be contagious... colds, flu, stomach viruses. If I'm running a fever, I don't chance it.

Basically if I have a fever, or if someone else around me has been sick with the same thing or if I'm actively vomiting. My stomach issues don't typically cause vomitting, so if that is happening then I get suspicious.

ORIGINAL: pumpkin how sick do *you* have to be to cancel either work or some other engagement that you have scheduled? When I was teaching...it took a lot. Mostly because I knew it would be nearly impossible to get someone to cover my class on short notice and I didn't want to stick all of the other teachers in my grade with 5 extra kids for a day. Teachers are notorious for that though- I once saw a teacher come to school with a migraine so bad she was puking We sent her home and split out her kids. With my current job, I'm more careful because I have many kids with weak immune systems (although I very rarely get sick- in almost 2 years of this job I've had 1.5 sick days). The 1 day I was puking (stomach virus or something), the .5 of a day was the tail end of a nasty cold that I didn't want to pass around. I think I canceled my morning appointments but was better by the next day.

I'm all for feeding my own babies, and maybe a dear friends if she fell ill or something.. BUT I'm NOT about eating my OWN or OTHER women's milk. Come on, ew.

Breastmilk is actually good for adults too. There have been some studies showing that it has excellent cancer fighting properties.

I'm sure it is and I probably would have no problem consuming it if I didn't realize what it was. (Kind of like when DH gave me a sandwich made from lamb spinal cord.) There's a topic on my favorite Christian talk radio show that I've downloaded but not listened to yet. But the title got me to thinking and I thought it made a good Kicka topic. It concerns Christians cooking dinner for Muslims during Ramadan. This is something that happens all the time. I remember hearing about Jewish families (before Partition) preparing dinner for the Muslim neighbors during Ramadan and their Muslim neighbors would light lamps, etc. for them on the Sabbath. There are families in Lebanon that are a mix of Muslims and Christians. If your in-laws are Muslim, wouldn't you join them for at least the food part of it? Just because you don't believe another person's religion doesn't mean you can't do for them at certain times of the year, KWIM? I wouldn't take my kids to a mosque (except if sightseeing) or pray with my Muslim friends, but I wouldn't mind breaking fast with them. In fact, last year DH and I attended what was basically a "brunch" with staff from my school at a nice hotel and it was a blast. Yes, they prayed at the beginning (I think) but DH and I just stood respectfully, like I do during the weekly assembly. I've had Muslim co-workers give me a Christmas card, wish me Merry Christmas, and even give me a gift. They don't celebrate that holiday but they know I do, and because we're friends they do that for me. We've also had Muslim friends join us for Christmas dinner. They were tickled pink that we wanted them to join us. If a church is using it as a type of outreach to Muslims, a chance to sit down and enjoy good conversation and food that opens up chances to talk about our faith, I'm all for it. Or if they're friends, co-workers, or neighbors that you want to do for during their holiday month (again, giving you the chance to talk about your faiths), go for it. However, if it's a church trying to shovel out that nonsense about us all worshipping the same God, I'd avoid it like the plague. What are your opinions, ladies?
