I think that a cross or wreath placed will off the road itself is good for the families and a reminder to all drivers that it is a danger to drive and to be careful out there.
Some of the memorials that I have seen are an absolute danger to the flow of traffic (because of their size) and should be removed a.s.a.p..

I dislike them. We have them all over the place here. They are distracting and I can't count the times rubberneckers gawking at them have nearly caused an additional accident. I agree with Laura...cemeteries are the place to put flowers, balloons, pictures, teddybears, etc...not the sides of the road.
I'd love it if they would make them illegal in my state.

I don't mind them being illegal. Some aren't so bad, but they really can be a distraction and also a hazard. I agree with Laura--put all that stuff in the cemetary.

It is illegal in California.

I'm not really sure how I feel about this.
Roughly about an hour south of where I live is the site of that horrible van crash that took the lives 4 young people and one of their chaperones from Taylor University which has become well known because of the mistaken identity case of Whitney Cerek and Laura VanRyn, in September of 2006. The memorial to that crash is a piece of art created with 5 white crosses. It's beautiful. The last time we drove by it a few weeks ago we noticed that someone had taken the time to plant some flowers around the base of it, and that it had been repainted. It's classy and very respectful. This was a tragedy that struck an entire community and hundreds of people. I personally would hate for that memorial to be removed.
Now near my children's school are several that I'm not sure are for people or animals? Regardless they are gawdy and quite honestly a violation of new sign ordinances in that city. One of them often has balloons that obscure driver's vision of a entrance to a sub-division. There is another right off a left turn lane in the median and has reflective tape on it which I've mistaken for a cyclist a couple of times, especially at dusk. I would love for these to be removed.
I guess what I would like to see is some regulation or rules put in place as to where and what can be displayed and then for folks to follow these rules.

Regulation would be good seeing how easy Americans tend to take advantage and redefine their freedoms.
Roadside memorials could be good and bad. Overall I do believe they serve a lasting purpose that memorials in a cemetary do not serve.

I came over to this thread after seeing the title of it on the sidebar. Mostly I hang out over in Singles.
I am a bit torn about the subject, as there is a roadside memorial at the site of my husband's death. I did not put it up: people whom he impacted for Christ put it up. Even ten years later, they still maintain it. The cross has been changed--made larger and is now natural wood instead of painted, and moved back away from the roadside next to the fences so that it's not distracting nor does it get in the way of road workers or mowers. I no longer live in that city, but when I go there, I do make a point to drive by.
I'm with leonfigg3 in that I think they serve a purpose: reminding people that driving is dangerous enough to kill. I don't know if it cautions others, but it does make me think twice and try to be more alert when driving.

Given how people take advantage of things I don't think it's a good idea... And the first time a person is hit by a car when setting one up who is going to pay, we the people... There are ways and means to honor those who have died aside from setting up roadside memorials that more times than not end up being litter...

I dislike them and believe they should either not be allowed or only allowed for a short period of time such as 2-3 months. Many of them are distracting because of their clutter and size. I've seen some with 3-4ft crosses, teddy bears, and balloons. Honestly i do not believe these are a deterrence and will not cause other drivers to pause and drive more safer. This may be rude, but the place to honor those who have passed on is a cemetery.
Some states are allowing them but they have state-issued small signs and the person who died has to have died in an alcohol related deaths.

I forgot to mention that the Taylor University memorial is well off the freeway at least 50 feet and is on privately owned land. It is very visible from the freeway. It is tasteful and NOTHING like the vast majority I've seen.

I'm from Detroit, but I went on vacation in Tennessee. I got lost WAY up in the Smoky Mountains. As I crawled my way back down the mountain (at 10 miles an hour)--along with noticing there were no guard-rails--I saw some engraved signs stating "Fred died here" "Bob died there"..then I saw one about a bus crash with many deaths. I was petrified to say the least, but it did make me even more careful as I drove.
I think if it's done tastefully, it's ok. The one's I saw were engraved in wood. I can see both sides, though.

Yeah, I was driving through the mountains in Guatemala and I went around one very steep curve with no rails - and it had more flower covered memorials than I could count. Made me very nervous everytime I went by it.

Sometimes such things do seem to get rather morbid.
I think that such memorials may be good for cases where the community was strongly effected, such as with the bus accident. In that sense, a public memorial may serve a purpose.
For families, though, it may be best to leave it in the cemetaries, and not publish grief along the roadsides.

Leave a cross or something but too many become ugly heaps of old flowers and cards etc..
Laura is right, go to the cemetary.
