Consecrated2God -> How does your pastor's wife refer to her husband? (9/21/2008 1:17:01 PM)

When she's talking to someone else, and referencing her husband, how does she refer to him? By his first name? As the pastor?

Example: "Hi, Mrs. Smith. _______ wanted me to give you this Sunday School curriculum."

What goes in the blank, if that someone is the pastor and you are married to him?

For me, I just say his first name. I would say, "Erick wanted me to give this to you." But I've heard others say, "The Pastor wanted me to give this to you".

I was just curious to see what other people do.

They usually go by their first name.

I prefer everyone to call be by my first name, including my wife.

Unless we are alone; then she can call me Honey baby!

Thanks
RC

Our PW referse to her dh by his first name...as does everyone in the church.

artemis -> RE: How does your pastor's wife refer to her husband? (9/21/2008 4:26:21 PM)

I've never heard of a pastor's wife refering to her husband as anything other than his name. The exception is that when she talks to children, she might say "Pastor + first name" the same way a wife with a husband with any other occupation might call her husband "Mr. + first name" when talking to children.

Of course, I've rarely heard anyone refer to a pastor by anything other than his first name and, occasionally, "Pastor + first name" or Brother + first name". That might be a regional or denominational thing, I don't know.

PrincessDonna -> RE: How does your pastor's wife refer to her husband? (9/21/2008 4:55:25 PM)

By his first name when talking to an adult. By Pastor firstname when talking to children.

pbaribeault -> RE: How does your pastor's wife refer to her husband? (9/21/2008 6:24:00 PM)

Yep, "John" to adults, and "Pastor John" to children

dianetavegia -> RE: How does your pastor's wife refer to her husband? (9/21/2008 6:44:38 PM)

She refers to him as Jeff. I call him Bro. Jeff. The kids and youth seem to refer to him as 'the preacher'.

PureLight -> RE: How does your pastor's wife refer to her husband? (9/21/2008 7:12:50 PM)

Pastor Mark for us. That's how she refers to him.

Covaan_Meshuga -> RE: How does your pastor's wife refer to her husband? (9/21/2008 7:23:40 PM)

With the whole congregation, wives included, the leaders all go by their first names, and children call each one Mr. ___.

I also go by my first name but with everyone, children included. Some people have a problem with that, so I admit that I have a problem with them having a problem with it. [:D]

She refers to him by his first name to adults, but as "Pastor" to children.

stimulus -> RE: How does your pastor's wife refer to her husband? (9/21/2008 10:57:19 PM)

Our former senior pastor was known as "Pastor" (usually without last name included). His wife would refer to him as "Pastor" with adults and children alike. I'm sure there were some friends in the congregation to whom she would have used his first name, but not many.

Our new senior pastor goes by his first name or Pastor + first name. His wife calls him by his first name, "my hubbie", or occasionally "Pastor firstname".

earthless -> RE: How does your pastor's wife refer to her husband? (9/22/2008 8:15:16 AM)

By first name.

Consecrated2God -> RE: How does your pastor's wife refer to her husband? (9/22/2008 8:24:12 AM)

"My hubbie"--that's funny! [:D] I think that would be strange to refer to my husband as my hubby.

We don't make a big deal over titles. Whatever anyone wants to call him is fine. He gets called Pastor Erick, Brother Erick, Pastor, and just plain Erick by different people in the church. The only thing he really doesn't care for is the use of his last name. He'd rather they use his first name, but it's not like it upsets him if someone uses his last name as part of his title.

I did refer to him as Pastor Erick last night to a little three-year-old. I sat her down next to him and said, "Here, you can sit by Pastor Erick". I think that's the first time I've used his title myself.

Covaan_Meshuga -> RE: How does your pastor's wife refer to her husband? (9/22/2008 10:55:55 AM)

At the old church, they made a big deal about titles. I found it to be ridiculous, since the use of their chosen titles were commanded. Regardless, I went by my first name only among them, but the pastors and other leaders expected us to all to kowtow. We were their underlings.

I am grateful for leaders, like your Erick and others, who do not attempt to elevate themselves by commanding others to use titles.

Consecrated2God -> RE: How does your pastor's wife refer to her husband? (9/22/2008 12:18:23 PM)

I've always thought it was pretentious to parade titles around. We're just ordinary people, no more special than anyone else. It still sounds funny when someone calls him "Pastor". It kind of reminds me of the way I felt when I was just married and people called me "Mrs. Luper". I felt silly, like I was pretending to be someone I wasn't. I'm used to it now, but I still have that same slightly embarrased feeling when someone calls my husband "Pastor". What's even weirder is when someone introduces me as "The Pastor's wife" as if it were a title, instead of by my name. I have to tell people my name myself.

I use his first name, well, er, technically, it's his middle name but hardly anyone knows that. LOL!

She preaches at our midweek young adults service, and she refers to him as "my hubbie" sometimes then. I'm pretty sure she has even said "my baby" at times. [:D] Given that our former senior pastor was a little hung up on titles and never went by his first name, it's been a bit of an adjustment.

The respect issues aside, I think it makes a lot of sense to use the title when speaking to kids simply because it helps them know who you are talking about. It's hard to keep all the names straight as an adult!

bzirk -> RE: How does your pastor's wife refer to her husband? (9/22/2008 9:29:20 PM)

I've referred to Doug as Pastor Doug when I was talking to a little kid because that's how they think of him. That's the only time I've done it.

What's been interesting is that a lot of people whom he's never met will call him Pastor Doug. Mostly it's because they recognize his voice from the radio and feel like they know him.

When I was a kid, all the pastors I knew were called Brother with their first names. One of Doug's pastors growing up was Jimmy Draper, and to Doug and everyone he knows that guy's name is Brother Jimmy.

My pastor when I was a kid was Brother David. That's just how we thought of pastors, and that's how their wives referred to them as well.

ta_mosquito -> RE: How does your pastor's wife refer to her husband? (9/22/2008 9:48:18 PM)

Usually she'll refer to him as simply "Pastor." When she's talking directly to him, she'll call him Don.

PopsiLufsJesus -> RE: How does your pastor's wife refer to her husband? (9/22/2008 11:09:48 PM)

She calls him John, that is his name!

HomeSpunLady -> RE: How does your pastor's wife refer to her husband? (9/23/2008 7:58:48 AM)

Feels weird for me to say "The Pastor". So I call him Andrew, I feel, first of all, that it's honest (that's what I'd call him anyway) and it's affectionate. I want people to know that I love my husband! "The Pastor" feels so disconnected. Besides everyone knows who I am talking about. Now maybe I'd call him that if we had a son that carried his fathers name, or someone else in the church, just out of simplicity.

Now if I am talking to a child who would only know him as Pastor or The Pastor I will call him that.

What's funny is most people will refer to him when talking to me as The Pastor, but there is one guy in our church who calls him, 'your man'. And I like it! I guess cuz he's first my husband and then my pastor. [:D]

I know a lot of pastors that go by Brother Firstname, too. I've also noticed in our denomination the pastors generally call each other Brother Firstname.
