Breastmilk is expensive, anyway. The women who do sell it get at least about a dollar an ounce. That would be some pretty pricey ice cream, especially since the price were to go up if the demand were higher.

I work for a company that is strictly "Animal Health/Veterinary Pharmaceuticals".....we get "complaints" from PETA all the time....and it always ends with "suggesting" that a check of a certain amount, made out to PETA, can somehow "rectify" the situation....

Does PETA actually stand for People Earnestly Taking Acid (as in LSD) because someone would have to be on drugs to suggest this.

They also seem to lack a basic knowledge of animal husbandry. We kept a (goat) dairy. You can't really impregnate an animal that isn't in heat, it's just not physiologically possible. Once it's in heat, it would have most likely been impregnated in the wild anyway. If you impregnate an animal too early after their previous birthing, you basically kill off milk production, so that's a bad idea. And, I'm not really sure what they mean by "forcefully", because it's not like any herd animal in the wild forms some sort of stable monogamous, or even consentual, relationship. *eyeroll* If you stopped milking them cold turkey, they would most likely die from massive mastitis. And, if you suddenly decided cows could not be milked, then they would die. Either from being killed off by the farmer who no longer can support the cost of keeping non-producing cows, or pretty immediately from being thrust into "the wild" when they're completely unprepared for that after thousands of years of domestication. To put it bluntly, cows are stupid.

milking machines Oh my!! YIKES!! I am sooo glad this cow is dry. Back on topic: Ice cream is made from (you guessed it) CREAM. I don't know about anyone else, but when I was lactating, there wasn't enough cream in my milk to make ice cream. Maybe ice milk? But made from human milk? Definitely a 10 on the yuck scale for me. Then make gelato. Which is even more awesome than ice cream. quote:
ORIGINAL: stellaluna God gave us cows for us to have milk, ice cream and cheese. Yum. Actually, it's my understanding that most adult humans are, to some degree, lactose intolerant. There's apparently some mutation that allows people of western European descent to digest milk that most other cultures don't possess. It makes sense when you look at the foods from around the world. -Dan.

I'm trying to think of a nice way to say what I'm thinking- but it's not working. I will say going to DQ just wouldn't be the same.

Cream...the more butterfat in milk the more cream you can make from it. The first few days, possibly a week or more, of lactated milk is the most rich in nutrients and butterfat. Gets little baby a leg up. Best ice cream not a premium brand? Stewarts....ever have fireworks ice cream with those little pop rocks in them? Gives me gas but man...its good. PETA...the threatened to picket our church once. My pastor likes using illustrations to his sermons. This one was about denial...the elephant in the room..so...he had a live elephant at church. Its an animal that a group keeps well taken care of to bring around to schools and other gatherings to promote knowledge of animals..and PETA called saying they were going to picket us. They never showed up. quote:

To put it bluntly, cows are stupid My dad who raised both as a kid says cows are much smarter than horses. quote:
if it's degrading or awful for the cows to be used for their milk, isn't it going to feel pretty much the same for a woman?? amen

Actually I think increased demand would lead to mass production bringing the price down. Can you imagine what the "mama dairies" would be like? Would they use machines similar to those used on cows, I wonder? Would they work an 8 hour shift? Would they unionize? I wonder?

The average lifespan of a modern dairy cow is 5 years..... I wonder..can I get my ex-wife to be a contributer to the milk supply?

Gets little baby a leg up. Being high in butterfat does not mean that the butterfat separates easily. Goat's milk is high in butterfat but it does not separate easily, whereas cow's milk separates almost immediately. quote:
Mastitis is a possibility but usually they just dry up. If they survived the initial pressure, sure, but it's a severe shock to the system. You have to remember that dairy animals produce extreme amounts of milk compared to the rest of their species (about 8 gallons a day on average for a cow in a full production state... some places will say 6, but that's counting non-producing cows in the average). So, the likelihood of rupture in a dairy animal is pretty high during normal production if they aren't milked regularly (I've seen a ruptured udder... it's not pretty, and without immediate treatment it can lead to deadly infection pretty easily). If rupture doesn't occur, then mastitis will probably set in, which is also likely to kill the cow if untreated. Even if neither of those things kill the cow, udders can "spoil" if they are not milked (this is not unusual in beef cattle when they're on the range and a newborn calf dies), and that teat will be incapable of ever producing again (keep in mind a cow has 4 teats, and the udder is separated in quarters, so it will still be capable of producing milk, just not as much.) At the very least, the animal will be in great pain (and I say this both from my experience with dairy animals, and my personal experience as a mother. hehe) quote:
My dad who raised both as a kid says cows are much smarter than horses. Some horses are really stupid, so I guess it depends on the horse. Cows... well, cows will not cross cattleguards. Even if they're just painted on the ground. I've seen cows stick their head in bushes when they're scared. I guess they thought if they couldn't see us, we couldn't see them. Nevermind that 80% of their 1100 lb plus body is sticking out of the bush. Cows will just kind of wander in front of the wind in a blizzard until they pile up on a fence. Then they will just stand there as they get drifted over by snow until they freeze to death. I've seen entire herds dead from this. Cows will respect a fence that their mass would make short work of without even raising their heart rate. Cows are definitely smarter than sheep though. You want a smart dairy animal, get a goat. Granted you will have to deal with the fact that they are also kind of evil at heart.

Not being a woman, I'm hoping there is still some market for my bodily fluids to be infused in some dessert and consumed.
