Cleaning ... I am "blessed" by an anal roomate who is a clean freak. And who will do annoying things like pick up my plate even if I'm not done with it ... and whine, whine, whine ...

That would be a fun title, Trishy!

Congratulations again ...

Thanks Joy. Much appreciated. Have you heard anything from Rach lately?

So what have you all got planned for the weekend?

It's Friday night here, and I've had a quiet day. Ended up sleeping some of it, but thankfully not as much. Managed to get some reading done. Something I really enjoy. I've got other things that I want to get done, so maybe I'll do that over the weekend.

Hi Cherish.........No I have not heard from Rach lately. I think the last time we talked on the phone was about a week ago. At that time she was busy looking for a job while doing odd end jobs for people in the area. We need to keep her in prayer.

I will probably spend most the weekend packing.....tonight I have a girls night with my women's prayer group which will be fun. We are planning taco salad and games but usually when we get together we end up praying.......

What are you reading?

LOL Diane........having a roommate pick up my plate before I am done with it would just be weird LOL........

I am moving, went to look at the house last night, the first of next month and this will be the first time since right after college that I have lived by myself. I have always had a room mate and then the last 8 years I took care of my father with the last three my sister and the girls living there as well.

I am really going to miss the girls........praying for so long to have children and feeling like God was not answering my prayers was hard until God brought the girls into my life. I knew he had answered my prayers just not in the way I expected......but now I have to learn to be alone again.........it makes me sad but I know God is still answering my prayers in unexpected ways.

For a long time now, I've been into historical fiction. You know, kind of like "Little House On The Prairie" type scenarios, people moving to new areas to make a new start on life, but not only those. These days, I seem to be getting more into the Amish/Mennonite kind of strories too. They fascinate me.

I agree about Rach and Dave.

This is so funny Cherish........I grew up in Amish country.........my brother-in-law is a JO which means he was Amish and then jerked over to English (though we are not English the Amish call us English)

We have a really cool museum here which was built and is ran by the Amish. They wanted a way to inform their neighbors and visitors about their history, life and beliefs so that all the mis information would be put to rest.

If you have any question about personal experience with the Amish just ask..........I am not an expect by any means but I did grow up with many and have even gone to corn field parties when I was younger........

That's amazing, Joy. So have you and your family gone through the meindig for some reason? (You don't have to answer that if you don't want to). I heard somewhere about rumspringer or something like that during the teen years. If I were there, I'd love to go to the museum. I have a snail mail penpal that lives in PA. Not into any form of "religion", but sometimes buys produce from them.

I don't know what a meindig is can you explain it to me?.......I might just know it by another name.

Each group is specific to their area and though seem very similar on the outside rules, regulations and beliefs vary from group to group. These things are set by the bishops and chruch leaders. For example around here some will have rubber on their bike tires while a few groups use wooden tires........some are allowed to ride in cars just not own them where others are prohibited from riding in any car which is not black.............so I guess my point is non Amish attempt to lump all Amish together as the same but you really can't do that because each will have slightly different ways of living life.

As for the wild years.......most the Amish boys around here do drive cars, party(quite a bit) and live wild lives(compared to the life lived Amish) until they marry. Once they marry they are expected to join the church, grow a beard and live the Amish lifestyle.

I have been to the museum twice, once I took the girls, and it is very interesting and informative.........one of the thing which really stood out to me is how those outside of the community make assumptions which are far from the truth based on things they observe.

An example.....growing up I was always told Amish did not drive cars because they believed it was worldly and a sin.........according to the museum the reason they do not drive cars stems from their value of community. They felt cars were a threat to keeping the community close. Cars allow you to drive further away, live further away and even go to church further away......accepting something which would encourage people to move further from each other would, in their opinion, harm the close communities which are so important to their way of life........

Interesting enough the elders and bishops who made these decisions so long ago were correct.........if you read the history of the auto and how being able to drive changed our culture and our lives it is clear they were correct. Autos have played a huge role in changing communities and families.

Joy, I don't know whether the meindig was something made up for the story, but I've been reading some of Beverley Lewis' books. She also grew up Amish. She used the meindig in the book to mean how a person is shunned if they do something against the Amish rules and don't come back to repent before the bishops and elders.

Ah yes then that has happened to my sister. When she and her husband first got together they were not Christians and were not living a Christ like life.........

The funny thing is while they were living together his parents and family accepted her being very nice to his English friend (they knew they were a couple lol) but when they found out she was expecting and planned on marrying the mother sent my sister a letter requesting she abort the child.......I was shocked and do not know if it was an response from her based on emotions and had nothing to do with the church (I am guessing it was). Her reason was that if my sister had the baby then M and her would have to get married and if he married an English girl he could not join the church and would no longer be a part of the community............They got married and his family (immediate and extended) would have nothing to do with M and my sister........they were as dead to them.

A few years later, once I think they saw he was not coming back, he and the girls started visiting the family again but my sister was not welcomed...........then after M's mother died the father was more open and the whole family began to be more accepting and invite my sister to family get togethers and stuff.

It was all very interesting...........I don't know if the bishops ordered the family to see M and my sister as dead or if it was more his mother..........

I have seen Beverley Lewis's book but have never read one...........

Wow, that would have been really difficult.

I wonder if authors like Beverly Lewis and others who write about the Amish and Mennonites were shunned at some time. I doubt they'd be writing books and things if they were still living in those communities.

Are you going somewhere special for your girls night?

Beverly Lewis was never Amish.

She wrote her books based on research and spending time with the Amish people.

Thanks Fritz. Seems I got that part wrong then.

In any case, I still have an interest in it.

How are you doing, Fritz? Not often that we see you around.

Hello Mr. Fritz. It is nice to see you posting.... Do you have any exciting plans for the weekend? .....I followed the link in your signature......looks like a cool site.......so is it basically a Christian facebook type site?

Cherish here is a link to the museum, Menno_Hof, I was telling you about. If you go to the homepage, look on the left for tour groups, you will find a link to a pdf file which talks about some of the mis information generally accepted by non Amish as true, which is not. On the site is also a virtual tour which is quite good.

I hope you enjoy....

I had lunch with a good friend of mine and we were talking about how much our lives have changed in the past year.......and how God has seen us through it all.........God is so amazing....

Thanks for the link joy. I love reading about such things. It's much easier than cornering them in the stores and forcing them to tell you what their life is like.

When we were looking to get a house built we visited a local Amish builder's home. very nice and very modern except for no electricity. Gas stove, gas refrigerator (I think I remember this right), but no lamps. Lot's of Amish down here too.

I went to Amish country when I went to Ohio recently. We need to see much more though. Loved the made from all scratch food and the store that sold maple syrup!

That's cool Trish that you are reading into it.

Funny story about my brother-in-law.......when he and his brothers were early teens they had a tv hidden up in the hay loft that they had wired to a battery.......they would go up there and watch dukes of hazard......everything was great......they were having fun and their father thought they were working extra hard........UNTIL.........one of their sisters came out to gather eggs and heard them hooting and hollering..........she said nothing then.......waited till later when they were gone and climbed up in hay loaf to see what mischief they had been up too....she found the tv..........now she could have told on them and gotten them into big trouble..........but she didn't........nope instead she told her other sisters........and the next time the boys went to watch a baseball game they found their tv turned to a soap opera and the girls watching............with sweet smiles they informed the boys they had two choices.........let them watch soaps when they wanted or they would tell Father what the boys had been up to............LOL

That is so cool Trish......how was your trip to the states? Did you enjoy Ohio? Were you able to do a bit of traveling or did you stay in one town most the time?

Hey all! Today was Saltlight's birthday, anyone heard from her at all?

Tammy, thats funny about Josie discovering the toilet!

BTW, I spoke with (always) Rachel earlier tonight. She hasn't a chance to get online recently, but is doing ok.

Not much else to report, its been a busy/tiring week. Yesterday was a test on my reserves, but today was much better though.

I hope everyone is having a great night!

Again thanks joy. I was halfway through the tour when the notion of an Amish sight with a high tech on line portal like that struck me with great amusement!

Joy, thanks for the link. I'm sure I'm going to enjoy it. Funny about your brother in law.

I've never been to the US, but hopefully one day... There's so many places that I'd love to visit there.

Mike, I haven't heard from Saltlight in ages.

Thanks for the update on Rach.

No, but I was wondering how Lisa (Saltlight) is doing. I've been thinking about her a lot. I wish I still had her e-mail address ...

Well, my plumbing problem has turned SERIOUS. Finally borrowed a snake to take care of my clog but couldn't work it so we called a friend over, who messed with it so much it probably messed up the MAIN pipe under the floorboard in the basement. (It leaks a little now!) Water still does not go down. We got some draino "foaming pipe snake" and it was poured down the drain hours ago ... now I am chasing it with some boiling water to see what happens. My brother, in the past, has been able to fix everything but clogs like this. We used to have a family friend who could ... sadly, he died last year.

The good news is it ONLY affects the sink in the full bath. The kitchen sink, half bath sink, bathtub and both toilets are all fine ...

I cannot afford a plumber so for the moment ... I guess I'll have to do without a sink in there. I've already moved my toothbrush ...

That is very good news, This means the clog is limited to the line from the sink to where is joins the bathtub line.

Under the sink you should have a trap on the sink line. These are normally removable (they have screw on collars that hold it in place).

Put a bucket under the trap and remove it. It will have a screw on collar towards the wall and another on the pipe stem coming down from the sink.

Remove the trap (some come in two pieces) and take it to another sink and rinse it out to see if there is an obstruction in it. If it is blocked, clean it out.

Then with the bucket under the pipe stem from the sink, fill the sink just a bit full of water (so that the bucket will hold it all) and open the drain. If it drains vast then you knoe the problem is in the pipe downstream of the trap. Need to be snaked out. If it drains very slow then your problem is most likely a blocked vent

The sink vent will be a small hole under the rim of the sink (or drillied down from the edge of the sink bowl for single piece sink/counters) This needs to be clear for the sink to drain properly.

Once the sink drains empty look down the drain for a side passage of some sort on the same side as the vent hole in the sink. This spot may have gotten all gooked up. Clean it if possible and try the sink test again.

I'll check in later to see how you're doing.

John - HERE is a thread Di started about her clog. Looks like she already took apart the trap.

I did some gardening today - harvested my green tomatoes and dug the plants under. So my garden is put to bed for the winter. I've got 1 or 1.5 pounds of green tomatoes (small ones) that I get to figure out what to do with. Last year I made green tomato pickles, but there aren't enough tomatoes for that (plus I still have 2-3 quarts from last year). I might make green tomato relish and give it away since we don't eat relish.
