Ontario just covers medical, and that is ONLY doctor and hospital visits. Prescriptions, dental and vision are all out of pocket expenses, unless you happen to be lucky enough to work for a company which provides benefits.

Ahh...thanks for clarifying. So each...what's the word? province?...does things differently?

Yes. Some provinces cover almost everything, others cover practically nothing. It is a royal pain when you've been in the hospital for whatever, and get put on meds only to find out upon discharge that the prescription to continue the meds will be a couple of hundred $$ per month (happened to a friend of mine).

Do you get help from manufacturers? Here, I see commericals for certain 'scripts where they say at the end that if you can't afford these meds, so-n-so labs can help. Personally, I hear them say "you really need to talk the dr into perscribing this and will pay for it just to get the good press and a tax write off."

Not here, although some provinces do offer a reduction on drug costs if you qualify, and once you've paid a deductible. (In Ontario, it's called the Trillium Drug Program). Also, people on social assistance get help paying for their meds. But we aren't on SA, and haven't heard back from the Trillium program, so for us it's ALL out of pocket.

Nicole, I graduated from Tabor in 1987. The kids just had four days off of school, for conferences. It went OK, I'll be OK with a quieter house this week though. Glasses, yikes they can be so expensive. E just ordered replacement lenses from WalMart, unfortunately the first replacements didn't fit quite right. The new ones are in, but we haven't been back to get them put in. Deanna

I'm feeling blessed then in the glasses department! The last time I bought glasses I got 2 pair with lenses for around $150! My scrip hasn't changed in years but I'm thinking the next time I go in it will have changed a little bit anyway. Ty is off to school and almost an hour into his day already and the little guys get on the bus in about 5 minutes. Brian and I need to go to town to get some necessities like dog and cat food and toilet paper. So I'm of to shower and get on with my day. Good thing is is that the laundry is almost done!!!! Blessings, Garsy

I have a conference with dd's chem teacher today. That is her zero period (the class that starts at 7 am.) We are going to try to figure out how to catch her up because it turns out that she hasn't been turning in the assignments like she told me she was. Friday was the end of the first quarter.

Hey everybody! Just poppin in to say hi. Things have been so hectic and I just haven't been myself lately. But the first quarter is almost over and I am so very thankful for that. Soccer season ended last weekend, but now Jake wants to play an indoor winter league. The girls are in full swing for dance, and we are still having issues with our exchange son. He just hates to study, do homework, and turn it in. We were spending hours a day just telling him to do his work, but now that he understands the language very well, we are telling him that he can do what he wants, and if he doesn't get the grades, his organization can just deal with it. If he doesn't keep a c or better in his classes, they do send them home. So we will see what happens. Sigh......

(((((Donna))))) Take it to prayer, which I'm sure you've already done, then wait and listen. Here I'm sort of wishing Ethan had MORE homework. I seriously need to work with him on the neatness aspect of all his homework. Ty's really turned his grades around in the last couple of weeks. He ended up with 2 A's, a B, 2 B-'s, and 1 C+. He managed to get A's and B's on all his quarterly exams. His German class is his C+ and it's was only 1% point away from an B-. I'm going to be putting plastic on windows tomorrow morning. The winds are really whipping around here lately and it's COLD. I did one window tonight here in my office and it already feels warmer! Blessings, Garsy

Roberta, Makes perfect sense to me! Ty's doing the same thing with Geometry. He nearly failed the class last year (ended the year with a C-) but we made him stick it out and complete the assignments AND he's retaking the class this year and managing an A-. Blessings, Garsy

Good morning! Cold here today too, Garsy. Some towns just a little north of here had snow coating the grass this morning, and more is expected tonight. Here it's all rain. Yuck. I was hoping for a warm Halloween again but I don't think that's going to happen! We have one more week of soccer. Gracen seems to be coming around with it. He does great at practice, but when he gets in the game he freezes up. I think part of the problem is that they don't practice on a field, just on grass with cones set up. He wanted to play, so we signed him up, but I'm not sure if he'll want to continue. I want him to do something, but I want it to be something he enjoys. I don't know if we should encourage him to go another season or try something different. Donna, hang in there.

I'm just on for a few, Larry has sinus surgery today, we have to leave in a bit. The ENT said he'd be off a few days but his family practice said to stay off until Monday. He definitely needs the rest.

I hate school. I hate him being in school. I hate dealing with mounds of homework when it appears he is getting nothing done in school. I hate having him do page after page of stuff he already knows, and having to discipline him for not wanting to do it. I really, really, really hate this whole school thing right now. I am sorry that school is so hard. Can he go to a different school? We went from homeschooling to putting half of our kids in school, and it has been one of the best decisions we have ever made. The kids fit right in, and are thriving. It appears that you just have a stinky teacher, unfortunately. My son is also in third grade, and the only homework he has is to study for an occasional test. I don't understand the mounds and mounds of work. Is it because he refuses to do them in class? If that is the case - I'm not sure bringing him home would help, but only you can tell. I was thinking on this because of something that you posted on the homeschool thread. I understand that it is terribly redundant to make a child do pages of something that they already know, but if he already know it, then he should be able to whip through those pages, and not spend forever on it.

Garsy, we have to do plastic over our windows this week too. My dad is coming to help me with it. If we don't do it upstairs, we will have snow indoors. Yes, really. Roberta, it makes sense to me. Kath, hope his surgery goes well and he is a compliant patient once he's home. Deb, we're actually doing okay. It helps that we only have one car now, no gas costs to get Brian to work (45 minutes one way), and he's not smoking anymore. I am a couponer and stock up on things when there are sales, so that helps too. We were more financially prepared for this kind of disaster than we thought we were. I really think God led us to put those things in place (extra coverage on car insurance and a separate accident insurance policy on Brian). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I went to the school today after Brian's PT and Esther/Levi's well child appointments. I brought Noah's agenda and all the work he brought home last night, because I wanted the principal to SEE it and not just hear about it. She took some notes and has some ideas she will give the teacher today. She's also going to be keeping an eye on the class over the next few days to see if she can figure out what the heck he is doing in school all day. There are kids in his class who routinely have NO homework. He can't go to a different school. Well, he could, but we're not sending him to public school. Which is not a commentary on anyone else's decision...just for our family, we have decided that homeschool or Christian school are our only options. I do think the teacher is part of the problem. I have not told Noah anything even remotely close to that though. I just hope we can find something that works for everyone, and SOON...like before I pull all my hair out. Brian and I were talking about this the other night and it looks like we will bring him back home for next school year. I am not confident we will make it that long.

Question for you, why have you ruled out public school? If the private school isn't working and you didn't feel that homeschool was right for you, why is public school not an option? I'm not trying to stir up debate but really just trying to understand. I know that some public schools really stink quality wise, and that some are concerned with the anti-Christian values taught. So if you don't mind me being nosy I'd like to know. Kim Q

I'm glad that so many here understand why I'm making dd do the missed assignments anyway. The way that others have responded around here, you'd think I was hitler!

So if you don't mind me being nosy I'd like to know. Kim Q Too many kids per teacher. The quality here stinks. The traditional school model is broken, and Brian and I have both experienced that first hand. I guess I can't say we would never use public school, but God would have to clearly tell us to put Noah there and He hasn't. It's not that homeschool wasn't/isn't right for us. When we put him in school in January, *I* was burned out. Noah was doing great academically, but was giving me constant attitude. Brian was working way too much to try to keep our bills paid, and him not being home was not good for Noah's attitude. Now, Brian is home all the time, so that is not an issue anymore. Brian has already stepped up and helped him with his homework and I know he will help with hsing when we go back to that too. The verdict right now is we will go back to hsing. I just don't know when. I don't know if we should stick this year out, even if it is torture for both Noah and I, or if we should pull him out at Thanksgiving or Christmas break. I don't want any hard feelings with the school, especially since I'm on the BOE, but I do not think it is the best thing for Noah anymore.

We did the christian school thing for awhile; dd 5th-8th and ds 5th & 6th. Ds got stuck with a new teacher each year and did ok. Math was really hard for him and I didn't realize that the school was almost 2 years ahead of the public and they used Saxon, which I wasn't crazy about. Ds seemed to get more homework than dd. I didn't think that school was very parent friendly at all. We pulled ds out for jr hi and enrolled him at our public jr hi and he is doing well. Dd went to public high school this year and loves it.
