John 13:14-17

If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

It depends on what it is. I was asked once to teach a Sunday school class...I really didn't want to do it and ended up teaching it for 6 years...and am still teaching but at an adult level. It truly depends on the task which needs to be done and the amount of time I have available.
I try to be open to new things..but I will not comit to something I know already I won't have enough time to do justice in that area.

Does that make sense? Another example is helping serve in a soup kitchen or something. I didn't see myself being one that cooked the food, but it was sort of thrown at me at the last minute and I found out I really enjoyed it.

One example of something I would NOT EVER consider doing again no matter who begged is putting together a VBS program with less than 3 months planning. It really should be a 9-12 month planning process..but I learned that lesson the hard way about 12 years ago.

I started teaching in the old church but after 15 years of teaching, I realized that I needed to be taught. I tried to just get a year off from teaching in order to learn and was not allowed to. I taught those last five years "under duress," then just quit teaching altogether. They took their demands too far. But through that, I was so completely burned out on teaching that I also dropped out of school, because I was heading for a teaching certificate. By the time that church got through with me, I didn't want to teach ANYONE ANYTHING for as long as I lived.

Sometimes, we give in to other's desires in order to please, when we really ought to be doing what G-d has told us.

But another side of this coin that I have tried is that I told the music leader where I attend now that I didn't want to be in the worship team. Years later, they asked me to sub. I feel very inept, because I never get to practice with them, but part of me really enjoys doing it, and the leader has taught me not to look so much upon myself, depending upon myself, but to pray, asking for G-d's leading when I do it. I am learning to really enjoy it now!

We are writing back and forth on another thread about the leading and gifts of the H Spirit. Sometimes, He does ask us to step out and do something a little scary, something we are uncomfortable with, something we don't necessarily feel prepared to do. Then, He also gifts us with His power to do what we are called to do -- not just when we have the talent or ability to do something.

As a general response I would say no. However, this would be done after praying for the situation, and about my reluctance to do the task, I would want to know if it were just selfishness or truly not something I should be doing. It has been said that 20% of any given congregation do 80% of the work. While I am not sure of that statistic I do believe it is possible. Part of the problem is the 80% who don't serve know that the 20% will do it. Often those in leadership are too worried about offending to be more assertive in getting more participation. We have a children's ministry director that is good about getting people to try teaching or helping. He will ask them to try a 3 month period, with no pressure to continue if they are not comfortable doing so. He will also ask people to function as subs, to see if they enjoy working with the kids. He will directly ask you and has also let it be known that if a class isn't covered it will either be combined with a lower age level or canceled.

So perhaps God is leading another to fill this role and it isn't my job to take that opportunity away.

If it were a 'once in a lifetime never going to ask you again' I would probably hem and haw but I'd do it.

If it were a 'well...I told you before it was a once in a lifetime...' then no. Sorry. You gave me your word and I'm going to make you stick to it.

I am one of those people who can say no quite nicely.
