Do any of you remember Teddy Huffam? He was one of the first to inspire me to play gospel music. His band, for a lack of better words, rocked! I remember as a young boy going to see these guys. First, at The Joyful Noise Supper Club in East Point, Ga. Second, at the Lithia Springs High School auditorium in Lithia Springs, Ga. My collection of Teddy Huffam LP's have been packed away for some 25 yrs. By the way, I have been a lurker on this forum since it's inception. I am no stranger to Southern Gospel Music. I "retired" from performing music about 5 yrs ago. Retired Bass Player

I plan to pass on my Southern Gospel collection to my son. He is not a musician but does have an ear for music. I am now an avid bass fisherman and tournament angler. My son and I spend a lot of time traveling together to lakes across the Southeast. He is 12 yrs old, very "up to speed" with the music of today. He prefers to pull out my "antique" gospel collection when we are in the truck. Rusty Goodman, Teddy Huffam, the original NewSong, Hinson's and the Hemphills are some of his favorites. He prefers the Hemphills "Louisiana Live" project over their others because of the band. I have to admit, I am partial to that recording also.

WELCOME RETBASSPLAYER. You are no longer a lurker, you've made your first post and now you must continue. We have a lot of fun on the Geezer thread, jump in anytime. I don't remember Teddy Huffam, but we were at the Joyful Noise a lot during those days. Don't know if you know it but Mr. Flurry died a while back. He and his wife Marilyn were the owners of the Joyful Noise. BTW: Are you from Georgia?

Yes, I knew Bill, Marilyn and Jason very well. They have been family friends as long as I can remember. The Joyful Noise was a regular hangout for me as a youngster. I can't count the artist's I saw for the first time there. Remember the "Wall Of Fame"? So many artist's photos on every wall of that place. Ton's of gospel music icons passed thru those doors. Georgia has been my home my entire life! Except for our vacation home in East Tennessee, I don't plan to leave anytime soon.

I loved Teddy Huffam and the Gems and the Joyful Noise was the best. We went down often from SC and when I lived in Atlanta, I practically lived there! I remember the Wall of Fame and the Joyful Noise is where I was the night we got word Dale Shelnut had died.

Robert York, You might remember this one. I was first introduced to Brian Free when we was the drummer and tenor for the Calvarymen way back in the '70's! Brian's dad was our local, city police chief back in the day. My dad was the lead guitar player for the Calvarymen.

That was probably Brians start to fame. He's come a long way since those cays. See Brians dad at most of Brians concerts in the area. Sure he'll be there on December 6 in Powder Springs. What group did you play for?

Robert, I have played for a few groups over the last 25 yrs. Some you would recognize and some you would not. I never traveled full time. Most of my picking was done in my local church, studios and some on the road. All of my "on the road" playing was done as a "fill-in" only. Groups in transition, group member sick, and some by invitation. At one time or another I "filled in" with the some you may recognize. The Perrys (Tracy Stuffle had just joined the group). The McKameys (in between Kenny Ambrose and Ricky Francis). The Squire Parsons Trio (with Ernie Phillips & Big Mac). The Trio (Anthony, Ivan, and Kirk). I also played with a few local (regional) groups in the Southeast back in the '80's & 90's and some "fill in's" with "secular" artist's. Tracy Lawrence, Mark Wills, Marty Rabon (Shenandoah). I have always enjoyed all types of music. Southern Gospel is my roots, my dad was a ryhthm and lead guitarist back in my younger years. Retired Bass Player

Teddy Huffman was probably best known for his song "Gone". He also did "John The Revelator".

Would love to have it live. We had most of his hits on a cassette from teh late 70's that has long since disappeared. Perhaps it's with all the socks my dryer eats.

Teddy Huffam and The Gems first big hit was "Stepping On The Clouds". They were "bustin' a move" long before EH & SS were ever even singing :) Seriously, it was the first choreography I ever remembered seeing. Joyful Noise was a GREAT place. It was the first job I ever had. Bill Flurry continues to influence me with the life I saw him live on a daily basis. He was a wonderful Christian and quite a businessman!

They were "bustin' a move" long before EH & SS were ever even singing :) Absolutely!! My first trip to NQC (and the first night)...me, my teen-aged daughter and another young lady from our church... We thought we'd leave before the last set and get a head start to the parking lot. As we were walking down the stairs, Teddy Huffman and the Gems began to sing. We stopped in our tracks, looked at one anotjer with big grins and found a place to stand and watch. They were great...and back in our hotel room we scoured the program to see when/if they would be back on. We assumed the last group of the night would be ho-hum. Boy, were we wrong! DJS, you're right of course... "Gone" was an Eldridge Fox song and I loved to hear him sing it. I also think even Foxy liked the way TH & the Gems sang it!

The first time we heard Teddy was at the NQC. Being from the North, we had never heard of him before. We loved his style and waited each year for his return. Too bad he passed so early in life. It is also too bad that the NQC can't come up with other Black quartets that sing comparable music. (Are you listening Clarke?)

ORIGINAL: DJSfromCleveland Well..actually, "Gone" is Eldridge Fox song. It was the biggest song he ever wrote, and i think his first! Wow, I forgot that Foxy wrote that song. Did he ever have any other song of impact after that one? Teddy Huffman did make a big hit out of the song, though BTW.

I doubt any other has had that much of an impact, but he's written / co-written some other good ones. The one that comes to mind right now is one he co-wrote with Sandy Knight in the '90s - "Behold the Master Cometh." I think the Kingsmen did it in '95 on Georgia Live.

Daniel, that was a good one. Listening to that song and testimony also leaves a good memory of Foxy. "Me and Peg would have stayed if Ruben would have let us".

I have been a fan of gospel music for many many years, since the earlier 70s. i also remember Teddy Huffam & the Gems and i still prefer them over Reggie Saddler and his Family. If you see Reggie and his family at the NQC, you hear them same songs, over and over and over again every year. Teddy could sure rock the house.

I was re-watching the One Night Revival video from 1988 that Charles did in Dayton OH. I always liked their cover of "I Can't Even Walk".
