My dd's periods are very irregular. She has them sometimes every two weeks and sometimes every 10 weeks. What is the best way to get her period regulated?

She has been menstruating for almost 5 years. The problem started about a year ago.

She doesn't want to go on bcps. I am not sure if I want her to or not.

if she is under a lot of stress, then things are likely to be "wacky". Also, it could be any number of other issues... so I would see a doctor about it to rule out the other issues.

I'd suggest pinpointing a cause, then figuring out what to do. :)

Yeah, and it is somewhat normal for their regularity to change with our age. Is this your 14yo dd we are talking about? My period have gone through phases, depending on how old I am.

yup - that's her. Except now she's 15 and reminds me often that she'll be 16 in January.

Good grief! Where did time go? Um, the other thing that might be happening... are the women in your house regulated with each other? All the free-flowing female hormones could be messing up her schedule.

As I recall, you all have gone through a lot of stress and change over the past year or so...

My cycle was irregular for a long time used to drive me crazy (but it wasn't very frequent). From what I hear (hs youth group girls), theirs is pretty irregular, too.

Why do you want to "get her periods regulated"?

Spoke with a gynaecologist last year about my dd, and she said that it was the contraceptive pill mentality that made us all think that we should be having periods every month, that many (most even) females don't have regular cycles and that no-one thought anything of it until the advent of the pill.

A teen's menstrual cycles can chop and change for any amount of reasons - from stress, from growing, from changes in their lives. The gynae said not to worry about it unless they stopped altogether.

So long as your daughter is eating well and is otherwise healthy, I wouldn't worry about it.

Well, if one is wanting to get pregnant then regular cycles are nice, and a sign of good hormone levels... but when your 16, I think they worry a bit much about it. Although, there are times when having them regular would be good. My younger sister(15) has irregular periods and her doctor did put her on "hormone therapy" AKA birth control pills because she'll go 2-3 months with no cycle and then spend 5 days out of school because the cramps are so horrendous. The poor girl, she also cramps when my mom and other sister cycle every month. She is so much like I was at that age.

Just for anyone's information, there are also other ways of trying to regulate hormone imbalances/periods, eg taking Evening Primrose Oil capsules, and/or Agnus Castus (chasteberry) tablets.

My youngest DD is on BC because she will go months without and then have one every two weeks.
She had Precocious Puberty (age 3 is when she was diagnosed), so her hormones have always been out of whack.

The problem is that when she does start after going months without one, they are very painful for her. I may try some of the herbs that Manda suggested. I'd rather not use bcp or anything hormonal.

Evening Primrose Oil is great, but it works best at a high dose (1000mg per day) and may take 2-3 months to get into the system, but it has all kinds of health benefits anyway.

Agnus Castus, in my experience, works quicker, but it may vary from person to person.

At least with both of these, they're all natural and not going to produce any side effects.

I still think she should be seen by a doctor. She may have other issues going on, and you wouldn't know... but the doctor could check. She doesn't have to take BC just because she does go to see the doctor, but you would know what the reasons were for her issues.

Oh, I agree that medical attention should be sought. However, I really don't want her subjected to a pelvic exam at this stage in her life.

They probably won't do a pelvic, but they may want to feel from her belly, or maybe do an abdominal ultrasound. My sister hasn't had a pelvic exam yet, and I didn't have one until I started birth control(wasn't sexually active) which was around 17 or so... I had menstrual issues for a couple years by that point, although mine was mainly cysts.

Have you thought of alternatives to meds? Reflexology massage (done on the hands/feet) can sometimes be a great benefit in helping to regulate periods. I didn't believe it until it saw it work time after time after time after time after time and so on.

It's kind of like acupuncture with out the needles. It's a massage done primarily on the feet. We are fearfully and wonderfully made the Bible says - and God has really made our bodies to heal themselves, we just gotta know how to make it work. The nerve endings of the body are concentrated in the hands, feet and ears. When you apply pressure to those nerve endings, it sends a message to the brain (just like touch itself operates) telling the brain to pay attention to the nerve and everything that nerve touches. For instance - I could apply pressure to the foot in the places where the nerves end for the female organs (ankle area). On your daughter they would probably be somewhat tender indicating that something is wrong with that part of the body. After a time of working on that area, the tenderness often leaves and symptoms leave also. Again, if I did not believe it worked until it was proven over and over and over countless times over.

Well not wanting her subjected to a pelvic exam isn't a reason NOT to take her to the doctors. Take her, explain the problem and see what the doctor says. If the doctor suggests a pelvic exam, explain your reasons why you don't want her to have one unless necessary. May well be possible for enough information to be gained through a physical external exam and blood tests ~ maybe an abdominal ultrasound.

I think it's best to just wait it out in my personal experience, unless she can't handle the symptoms... they'll become more regular as she gets older. I had strange cycles when I was younger (14-16), often very irregular, heavy, and painful - I refused to go to a doctor for it, so though I 'suffered' for a few days a year, I wouldn't go back and change that. I'm 26 now and I have had cycles like clockwork since 18 or so, my periods have gotten much lighter and shorter as well. And I love the fact I've never had to go on a BCP or take any other medications for it. Her body should even itself out with time.

So did you decide not to try the EPO or the Chasteberry (Agnus Castus)?

The thing is, that the start of these changes in her periods coincided when you made your big move.
So it could well be stress-related, and I'd imagine they will settle down of their own accord in time, and the remedies I suggested could help that along, without using BCP (which is all the doctors are likely to suggest).

Maybe. But mine certainly didn't. It's torture and it's truly been a nightmare for me most of my adult life - except when I was on BCP. But since having my kids and going back on BCP (for the pain primarily), they don't even work now so I'm stumped.

I've just decided to go off of Seasonale and see what happens (again). It's scarey but I think I have to bite the bullet and stay off of them - will probably take a year to get it out of my system and then see what happens.
