Have you ever had a song stick in your mind because of the instrumentation? Such as; piano, bass, guitar and drums. Here's a few I can remember: In My Robe Of White - Gold City (Live) - Fiddle, guitars and drums, intro and conclusion. Gonna Run On Home Now - Spencers - Guitar intro. He's Still Working On Me - Hemphills - Percussion intro. You Make It Rain For Me - Rusty Goodman - Sound of rain at the conclusion of the song. I Wouldn't Miss Heaven - Singing Americans (Live) - Guitar intro and conclusion. I have always paid attention to the "music in the song" such as the instruments and the impact they have on "selling" the song. I know, I know the words are what we should focus on, but don't we all from time to time catch ourselves playing "air orchestra" to a song? Retired Bass Player

How about the version of "Give Up" the Happy Goodmans did on their live double album (Best Of...) in 1977? Larry Strezlecki is playing some seriously funky bass lines (Ric 4001) throughout the song. I got that album as soon as it was released. To this day, "Give Up" is one of my most often hummed song because of the bass track he laid down. Then, I start thinking of the words, and remembering the message! "...Give up and let Jesus take over, He'll make a way for you..."!

I don't know about the hot licks, but both of you posters sure listed some wonderful songs. Now I've Kevin Spencers voice in my head. That's a good song.

One I can think of right off the bat is Gold City's "I'm Not Giving Up" because of the intro. Another one that comes to mind is the Kingdom Heirs live versions of "What We Needed." It's already a great song as it is, but when they do the encores and Dennis Murphy comes in with that drum cadence while Arthur Rice is holding that long note to kick of the encore of the chorus, it just adds a new dimension to an already outstanding song.

What about that Banjo solo on the Kingsmen's "Beautiful Home"?

As far as hot licks goes I love the acoustic guitar intro to "Don't It Make You Want To Go" by the Wilburns. This was Kelly Back in the studio. The style sounds a lot like John Bowman playing.

I like the songs named (at any rate, the ones I know, which are most of them). To me, though, the most memorable intro ever in SG would have to be "Champion of Love."

"Champion of Love" is a great one! Another CQ song that you immediately recognize within (at most) two bars, "We Shall See Jesus". The folks I play with recently started doing it. Since we are mainly a SG covers band, we usually try to duplicate the original arrangements. As soon as I hear the first couple of notes, I know we're going into "We Shall See Jesus".

Funny story about music in songs. I had heard 3 Kingsmen tapes before I ever saw them live, and the first time I saw them live, I had no clue what song was coming, because the live band (piano, drums, bass, rhythm guitar) sounded nothing like the cassette intros, done with more instruments. The live versions rarely had but just a note or 2 befoe they'd start singing. That was in the "Kingsmen band" days, where they played all their music live. In this "canned music" era of today, you hear almost the exact same intros and music as you do on the CD. I don't know, I kind of liked the simpler live arrangements that you used to hear them do.

I was just listening to the Hinsons' "Come to the Water." It has a cool bass part shortly before the last chorus.

I love the way The Hoskins Family done the intro on "Ordinary Sunday".... the church bells chime... then an "old congregation" singing "holy mana".... then the fiddle kicks in... Along that same line.. on Brian Free's first solo project... there is a clip of Brian singing as a teenager... then it goes into the first song.

I don't know if anybody remembers the harmonica intro to the Perry Sisters "I Don't Want No Rocks" from their early '90s recording Heavenly Rain, Showers Of Blessings. That was the first song that came to mind.

There have been some great live musicians in SG through the years. Here are a few that come to mind: Sonny Garrish Joel Key Terry McMillian James Freeze Roger Fortner Jeff Hullander Wanda Vick Kevin Williams Harold Timmons Ronnie Moore Bruce Watkins Dale Jones Jeremy Metkiff Jason Webb Brian Sutton Greg Ritchie .........and a ton more I didn't mention. Some of these mentioned have gone on to very successful studio careers. Retired Bass Player
