I have struggled with my health after being so destructive with drugs most of my life, however good food and drink has helped with that. I only drink a glass of red wine or two on special occasions though because must watch the liver. Getting a good balance of veges, fruit, bitter and hot foods is good and plenty of water.

at age 23 I found out i had SKY HIGH colesterol levels...it was bad. I wasnt obese..I was a litle "chuncky" but I found that a bowl of oatmeal in the morning is FABULOUS for health and weight loss. Before it cooks, chop up a bannana in it and let it cook down with the oats. Lost 30 pounds...wasnt all oatmeals doing though =)

Blueberries are good for you. I buy them in bulk in the summer and freeze them in little baggies, serving size. Then they are handy for adding to oatmeal or ice cream or pancake batter.

Exercise is always good. Even moderately. I have spirulina tabs and fish oil each day. I also make sure I eat some foods which I don't always like. Grapefruits and rocket. My health is optimal now and believe me I did nothing to contribute apart from eating well. In fact I did everything wrong yet I have great skin and have kept really well. In fact most people don't think I am anywhere near 45. Most would say I am 32 at the most. I think it's because of the fluids I drink and all the fruit and veges I have always eaten.

I think we get used eating junk foods and it becomes even appetising to eat that junk. Like in the past I never got repulsed by walking past a sandwich shop but now I do. It turns my stomach. I think my taste has become more refined. Now I eat white bread and I taste the rubbish in it. Before it was the wholemeal I didn't like, now it has changed.

How much fruit and veges do you eat? I just got up and had 2 kiwi fruit and an apple. I usually have fruit for breakfast then eat another 2 or 3 pieces during the day. I eat plenty of salads and I was drinking green tea until my dentist told me it stains my teeth. I drink white tea now. It doesn't stain and is from the more refined part of the flower. So many foods have got poison in them these days that I bet some poeple find it hard to always have good food. What has your experience been?

Hello Giulia,
I go for about 5 cups of green tea myself, because it has a lot of antioxidants, polyphenols, and of course, the catechins. I haven't heard that green tea can stain teeth, I only heard that with brick tea. Green tea is also supposed to be good for your teeth. But anyway, I am trying to eat more fruits and veggies. Trying to go for that strive for 5 a day. But maybe we should be striving for 10 a day.

I do get V8 juice, and that's a good 2 servings right there. But I am improving with my diet.

But it seems you do really well with your diet.

Soli Deo Gloria,
Jessica

I believe green tea to be a superfood. As Nadine Taylor says, green tea is a steaming cup of medicine. Nadine Taylor is a registered dietician an she is really into alternative medicine, especially green tea. She wrote her own book on green tea and here is her website that totally specializes in green tea.

www.greentealibrary.com

Now, there is also this berry called acai berry that has gotten a lot of attention lately. There are very few studies done on it, but the ones so far are super promising. At the University of Florida, they did this lab test which had human lukemia cells in a test tube. When they applied acai extract to the lukemia cells, 56 up to 86 percent of lukemia cells self destructed themselves. So that is SUPER promising. (The same happened with green tea actually). But the acai berry is really promising and it also has twice the amount of antioxidants as blueberrys.

Here are a couple of websites that has some recent studies done on the berry.

Hope this helps.

White tea is better. It comes from the tip and is not so strong.

Yes, berries are very good. I eat goji berries.

I drink around 4 or five cups of tea a day. That is a lot. Yes, my dentist told me it would stain my teeth. Wine and coffee also stains teeth but I don't drink those much. The wine once every couple of months and the coffee a little more.

Well I will admit I did e-mail Dr Nadine Taylor about that a couple weeks ago and she did say that white tea might have more catechins than green tea. But that is also inconclusive. You can have a really good quality green tea with a lot of catechins and a low quality white tea with less catechins than the green tea.

What is good about green tea is that it has a fair amount of fluoride in it and it really helps your teeth. White tea, on the other hand, doesn't have as much fluoride and doesn't help you in that area. I can tell you ever since I have been drinking green tea every day my gums are sooo much healthier. I used to have gingivitis. And for my teeth it really doesn't stain them. I think it depends on the brand and the quality you get as well. I use Salada.

But even if it does stain your teeth a little bit, I wouldn't really care. As long as I have healthy teeth I am fine. It's not like green tea will make your teeth yellow like coffee would. The benefits are really good and I would rather have less than perfect looking teeth but very healthy teeth. American culture is too obsessed with looking perfect. You know how people go out and buy those whitening tools? Well, those are really unhealthy for your teeth. Some people are even addicted! I don't think people in Jesus' day had perfectly white teeth.

About the wine staining your teeth, red wine is healthy for you too. Not like I'm trying to make you drink it or anything, but things that are healthy for you just might stain your teeth a bit. But so what if you have off white teeth rather than pearly whites. Health is much more important than looks.

Who knows? Maybe even the acai berry might stain the teeth because it has a lot more anthocyanins than red wine. That doesn't mean though that we should stop consuming such a healthy product just because it might stain the teeth a little.

But eating good food is also crucial to a healthy diet, not just beverages. The NIH says to strive for 5 a day, but maybe we should go for 10.

Jessica

Water is also very important. A litre and a half a day is safe. Depending on diet.

I have been eating a lot of chicken, marinated chicken mind you, lately....along with brown rice (found some organic brown basmati rice that is SOOO good!!), whole wheat pasta (LOVE this), veggies, etc. I also love salmon and Bumblebee makes it already cooked and marinated in a pouch and you just throw it in the microwave. It is SO yummy and fish is so good for you My hubby hates the smell of it though, hehe. Just started a reduced/low-fat diet a couple weeks ago which is why I'm loving my chicken right now and I can't wait to go grocery shopping on Thursday to get some salad stuff as I have been craving one dearly.

As far as drinks, I tank up on a lot of water and when I want flavor to my water I have Crystal Light packets that go right into the water bottle which I love. I also love Lipton Raspberry White Tea and Green Citrus Tea and will usually get Raspberry tea if we are eating out or something.

I'm cooking my best friend dinner for her birthday on Friday night which will consist of lasagna and chocolate cake with chocolate frosting (her two favorites) so I will have to watch myself a bit that night, though I don't think I will eat any cake as I'm not a big fan of chocolate on chocolate. But alas, it is her birthday and therefore she gets the cake the way she likes it I will be having me some lasagna though, mmmmm.

For your information-- Microvawes change the molecular structure of foods, and turn them radioactive.

Still sounding yummy ?

Yoghurt is great for thrush which mothers and babies seem to get a lot of. Not the yoghurt that is processed with junk but the stuff that is pure. A little honey or fruit goes great with it. Best not to go for yoghurt with fruit already in it because it has a lot of sugar- corn syrup. Corn syrup gets used a lot and it is basically just as sinister as trans fat.

Here is a link I found regarding microwaves.

Hello Pamsy,

Thanks for the link, but I would rather have real scientific information behind the use of a microwave. If it does prove to be bad, then I would understand. But I need real evidence.

Soli Deo Gloria,
Jessica

I will keep searching for more. I didnt care for the beginning of the article either. But if you read on, they do talk about what was found scientifically, I heard years ago already about Russia banning the use of microwaves and the reasons.

I read somewhere today that broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprouts are good for healing lungs and preventing lung cancer. Can't stand brussel sprouts but really like broccoli and cauliflower. Can't quite understand the reasoning but sometimes that is the case with science.

Fresh orange juice is the best. too much juice - then switch to water. do not use those energy drinks that have tons of caffeine and sugar.
