Wii is definitely better than other game consoles because it's more physically active and more interactive. Some of the games are the old level games that can be addictive, however. We won't let our kids have games like Mario Galaxy because they tend to raise frustration levels around the house. Endless Ocean is a wonderful and gentle game that our 8-year old loves. That, and Wii Sports, is my favorite. P.S. I did get some repetitive motion injuries from Wii Sports, so that's a potential concern.

ORIGINAL: isaacsmom What sort of family/kid/teenager appropriate games do you have? We just won a Nintendo Wii and I haven't the slightest clue. Our children are still small, but we'll probably let the youth group use it at functions as well. What sort of clean, family-friendly games are out there? LOL, I bought one for the family for Christmas and had the same problem. I got a system that came with the sports package and then I also got the Fit package. But if you have shopping malls around you, go because in many places, they are setting up these places that have all of the games and you can actually try them out. I didn't see anything that I wouldn't get, but I was most concerned with trying the things I bought. But I loved what I tried. I did pretty good on the balance thing. I got to level 7 on my first try.

One thing to note about Wii Fit, that I haven't seen mentioned here, is that it does feature Yoga excercises. While I, personally, wouldn't have any problem with that, I do know several Christians who do have a problem with Yoga. I just wanted to mention this for any of those who would object to Yoga and it's connections to Eastern mysticism.

Oh yes the Wii fit does have yoga but it is nothing more than just doing stretching and balancing exercises. I am actually quite good at some of them :).

LOL, I wish I could say that I was even OK at them. I don't have a problem with the yoga moves because you aren't participating in any of the beliefs that some people associate with it. It may have connections to Eastern mysticism, but if you yourself are doing just the moves and not all the mind stuff that goes with it, then I don't see a problem with it either. I actually have no clue what yoga is or can be about other than the stretches.

Elebits is a fun, story-based game- but it is only one player. WarioWare Smooth moves is fun, some of the stuff you have to do is pretty silly and the kids think is hilarious.

I actually have no clue what yoga is or can be about other than the stretches. I see it the same way. However, I know people, in real life and in person, who think that any connection with Yoga is wrong, even just doing the moves. (One of whom actually comes from somewhere Yoga is widely practiced as a religion) I think those people would want to know that before spending a fair chunk of change on something they would consider to be tainted. I didn't really mean to start any discussion, just provide fuller info on a product. I'd do the same thing for other games. For instance, if I were to talk about Animal Crossing (which is getting an upcoming Wii release.) I'd mention that there is a fortune teller in the game, and a Halloween celebration, among other things some might find objectionable. I played AC nearly every day for a year on the Gamecube, but I know there are still some people who'd want to know about that content before purchasing. Oh, and to try and not push this thread any further off track (especially since I'm neither a parent nor have any kids to poll for game opinions). Someone mentioned Gamespot for game reviews. I haven't liked Gamespot for a while. I prefer Wii.IGN.com , it's a secular site as well, but they at least are fans of the Wii. I wish I knew of a site that did Christian game reviews. And for a specific game reccomendation: Bomberman Blast on Wii Ware. While I haven't played this specific Bomberman, I have played other Bomberman versions, and loved them. If I were looking for a multiplayer game, this would probably be my first purchase. At least, until Nintendo decides to remake Pac-Man Vs for the Wii with Nintendo DS connectivity.

Thanks, everyone! We got our Wii last night and are playing it today! We just have the Wii Sports right now and hubby is addicted to bowling, LOL. Our 3 y.o. likes baseball because he can pitch and swing by himself (not having to hold down any buttons). I think I will check out the Cosmic Family and we may get that one for Christmas, since our kids are little.

I just saw a commercial for Animal Crossing for Wii. I love playing that on our game cube. That alone makes me wish I had a wii. I had no interest at all before, but I love that game. It is good and fun for any age.

I got some steering wheels, two driving games, one is the mario brothers game which I know nothing about except that it is mario brothers. Then I bought some other thing with a tennis racket and some other things for the WI fit. I can't wait to give it to them so I can use it while they are in school. LOL. But there are alot of games for it that are not too expensive. If you get to the right store and just ask, you might get someone who can suggest games to you. I even went to K-mart and this guy was pulling out all these really cheap games for the kids. It was so easy. I didn't even have to think. Just say yes, no, yes, no.

For those looking to buy a Wii, I've seen used systems at Gamestop. Just a caution on some of those cheap games- a lot of them really are cheap. They don't really use the motion capabilities well and the games are not very complex or interesting. For little kids these might be ok, but for kids who are a little older (~8-10) or adults they can be pretty boring. I prefer to buy games that I know are good (by experience or recommendation) in the Used section. We are also big fans of trading games for store credit- if my kids really want a new game, they have to decide which one/ones they are willing to trade in.

ORIGINAL: flowerz What is the game Animal Crossing about, and would it interest teens? Depends on the teens, but many people of all ages like it. Animal Crossing: City Folk is the third, I think, Animal Crossing game to be released in the US. (Japan had a Nintendo 64 version that never made it to the US because we didn't get that N64 Disk Drive add-on hardware either). I played the Gamecube version. AC is a hard to define game. I'm not even sure what genre to call it. It's a set in a cartoonish world where you play a human who has just moved to a town full of animals. Not that species has much to do with anything, but that's the visuals. When you arrive at town you get set-up with a house and, in the gamecube version at least, a temporary job that functions as a tutorial. Gameplay is just about living in this town. Time in the game is set by the clock on the Wii (I haven't heard for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if the game uses an internet connection and the Wii's weather channel to match up the game with real life weather.) As a year goes by in the real world, a year goes by in the game. Various days set off special events in the game. Holiday celebrations, fishing tournaments, various vistors and more. In between major events you run errands for neighbors (delivering items, writing letters, mostly), plant trees and flowers, hunt for bugs, dig for treasure, go fishing, collect shells on the beach, find items to fill out the town museum's collection, talk with neighbors, decorate your house with tons of available furniture (it's great fun trying to complete sets and themes) and more. In the Gamecube version four players could live in the same town (only one could play at a time) and each had their own house to decorate. In the DS version, I'm pretty sure four players shared the same house. Wikipedia says in AC:CF that each player will have their own house, but the houses will be spread all over town (the Gamecube houses were all on in one little plaza.) City Folk introduces two major new things I know of. The first is a downtown to go visit. Some things from past games have moved to the city (like Gracie's clothing and Redd's shop), and other things are new like an auction house and a shoe shop. The other major development is the addition of voice chat. The new Wii Speak microphone sits atop your television and allows you to chat with other game players (and, like the DS version, they can visit your town while you're playing). Like most other Nintendo stuff online, to chat you'll need to exchange friend codes, so you won't just be chatting with strangers. Oooh, I've rambled quite a bit. I really loved the Gamecube version, but got rather burnt-out on it. Every day for nearly a year is a lot, and the Wii version looks to have lots more to do. The Animal Crossing world is very charming. For people who like the graphics (which kind of look like a childrens' book) and don't mind having few real objectives, then it's a great game. Oh, another thing about AC. There's only so much you can do in a day. Sure you can fish and hunt bugs endlessly, but villagers run out of errands, the shops only have so many items each day, etc. This can either be frustrating for gamers who like marathon sessions on weekends, or a reason to keep coming back for someone who likes just a little gaming each day. EDIT: Short list of potentially objectionable elements I remember from the Gamecube version: there's a fortune teller, Redd sells stuff that is implied to be stolen or otherwise shady, houses can be decorated according to fung shui to increase chances of money and rare items, there are Halloween, Christmas and (new to AC:CF) Easter celebrations (very secular). Some house decorations have religious connections (a shinto shrine, a menorah, others). Late at night sometimes a ghost appears asking for help catching spirits. There is a spirit/gnome/thing that lives in the town well and you talk to it about making the town beautiful (pulling weeds, planing flowers & the right amount of trees) and returning items when you can't make it to their rightful owner. However, the worst violence is hitting someone with a butterfly net or setting a prank called a "pitfall" which causes characters walking over it to fall into a small hole in the ground (unharmed). There's no swearing or foul language I remember. And the closest thing to sexuality I remember was a very blurry pixelated version of the Venus de Milo in the museum. No one does drugs, I don't remember smoking or drinking, or any references to them. There are lots of positives, like friendship, responsibility and stuff like that as well.

I'm not sure if this is off-topic, but I'm wondering how many people that own both a Wii and a Nintendo DS realize that the Wii can be used to download game demos for the DS? If you load the Nintendo Channel onto the Wii (a free download from the Wii Shop Channel), you can use it to find DS demos. I think that it's not exactly intuitive to find it on the channel, but if you click on the "Find titles for you" option, the DS download service will be at the bottom of the list that appears. The demos offered change periodically. Nintendo hasn't done much in the way of game demos in the past (beyond in-store kiosks), and it's nice to see them offering something, finally. (Too bad you can't play Wii game demos as well).

We just got Guitar Hero World Tour. It is great to be able to play with 4 people! And there is a beginner setting so even the little ones can play or sing and it doesn't fail the performance. I love the drums! It also has a WiFi option so (if you have it connected to a wireless network) you can play with or against other people who have the game (and a connection). FYI, you can also do the WiFi thing with Mario Kart.

We've found that renting games that look interesting from the video store, and then buying the ones we like used (at Game Stop or other such stores) is a good way to find build a collection. Animal Crossings is fun. It's kind of like a less-pressure Harvest Moon with animal characters instead of people. Another thing I like about this system is that we can download older Nintendo games with Wii points. Dh kept around an old system for a long time because we both like to play Dr. Mario. It was so cool to be able to download that. I can even play with people around the world if I want.
