I was drawn by the love of the cross. I had always heard about God and it didn't take much to convince me, even as a young teen that I was a sinner. To realize that I had wronged God but He took my punishment, even before I knew Him was almost too good for a lost, lonely, depressed girl who thought she was unloved and unlovable. What keeps me loving Him? His faithfulness, His attention to the details of my life. The fact that the very God of the universe cares enough to be involved in my day to day struggles. I can't begin to tell you how many times He has sent just the right song on the radio, or just the right verse to my mind, a friend who says just the right thing, or has the wisdom to just sit and listen. The joy of hearing birds outside my window, or a hug from my kids. All these small kindnesses He gives just to make my day a little nicer. God is good, that is why I love Him.

Gods love for me and knowing who I am in him, makes me love him and be compelled to serve him any way I can.

We need something outside of ourselves and this existence. God made us to want, to need, to desire and these are all good things just as they can all be bad. God is the balance in these things otherwise we would never want a relationship with Him because we would fill them with the wrong things. We are driven to search for love, hope, belonging, and peace. We often look in the wrong places and end up making a royal mess. God reveals Himself to us at a time when we must make a decision. He extends His love through the life and death of His son and helps us to use our tiny bit of faith to accept this great gift and the reward is that thing we had been looking for. The more that we seek to learn, the more we are compelled to love Him. God made it so!

What compels me to love God has been His presence in my life, ever present. He continually reminds me he is there. From as far back as I can remember, it has been His love that has carried me through, given me hope and strength to endure. The love that has grown from the tiny seed planted when I was a wee child, continues to grow everyday.

ORIGINAL: Walker311 I expect plenty of christianese but this is not what I'm looking for. I believe that it is important for you and I to fully know how and why we are drawn to God and to be able to adequately express what you know and what you feel to others. If you do not believe that this has anything to do with feelings then express this and explain why. Thanks! What Compels You To Love God? Yet another good question from the "mind of Walker"... I know you said you didn't want Christianeze... (I know... that really bugs me too! ).... however... I've got to say, "Because He first loved me"... however again... it is so much more than that. It is HOW he loved me... and continues to love me. When I think about the cross... and I'm not talking about the empty cross or the pictures that so many see of Jesus on the Cross... I'm talking about the reality of the cross. The beaten and bruised body of Christ. The flesh and sinew ripped from his body... the thorns piercing His brow... MY LORD, stripped naked before His accusers and nailed... no, not nailed... violently had spikes driven, hammered into His hands and feet upon a crude wooden cross... and then thrust upright and left to hang there as they played games at the foot of the cross. This compels me to love God. When I feel that I have reached the end of my rope... and am barely hanging on to the fray... and I scream out to God asking "WHERE ARE YOU... SPEAK TO ME!!!!" .... then He quietly nudges me to go and take a desperate mom who's family just split apart... her husband and two of her children going all the way across the country,... to the alter, and then see her break before the Lord letting down the walls that have held her captive for so long. Then I smile to myself when, near the end of church, I say... "God, I asked You to speak to me."... and He says, "I did." This compels me to love God. When I find myself gripped with fear and worry... and again, crying out to God... saying, "This wilderness is too long... Your silence is to deafening!" As I recount to Him all of the needs and the bills and all that this world demands of us... and I ask again... "where are You God???" He gently reminds me of my blessings... my family... my children... my grandchildren... my husband. It is then that I remember how wealthy I am... a wealth that money cannot compare to. This compels me to Love God. I could list more and more... and so much more! But it all goes back to: "Because He first Loves me." (Thanks Walker... I enjoy your questions)

One night I looked at three depictions of the Passion of Christ etched in colorful stained glass window. They might as well have become animated because in that moment the deep. deep. deep love of Jesus was revealed to me. Instantly I was driven toward a passionate Lover that made all other things in this world pale in comparison to Him. That was in 1971. I was fourteen years old. I wouldn't leave this Lover if you paid me one million dollars, offered me all the pleasures of life and more. If you want to know what compels me to follow Him I will gladly tell you.

I actually believe that there are people who cannot love God. They are not compelled to love Him. In fact, they actually hate God. Consider that these people may say that they believe there is a God and will comment that they don't hate Him, but simply are not interested. The bottom line is if you do not love God then you hate God. There is no middle ground. I consider that if I indeed say that I love God, then I have a responsibility to love God well. How can you love God half-way? How can you love Him partially? You can't! It is impossible. When we accept Jesus Christ into our lives, a work begins and continues for as long as we breath and it is the Holy Spirit teaching us and working through us to love God properly because we do not have the right stuff alone. As Christians, we all get so frustrated in our spiritual walk because we often feel that we are not praying enough, not studying enough, not doing enough, and so on. Jesus knew this and chastised the disciples for sleeping when they should have been praying. M't:26:40: And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? M't:26:41: Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Jesus undertands our weaknesses but we must be aware that slackness in our spiritual lives can have negative results. I am compelled to do a better job of seeking, learning, and meditating. I know I fall short in doing these things myself so it is the help of the Holy Spirit who compells me to pay attention to my soul and understand that it is the love from God and my love for God that will make my soul shine.

In my spiritual growth and because i want to know what is God's love. He has allowed me to understand that one plus one equals two,(yikes) in the spirit. For me i think he is showing me what areas in my life that i love and have not given them up yet. Jesus teaches that he will manifest himself to us and i do see that. Because my heart has to change, he's showing me what it is that i have to change, and because i'm learning to understand his love it makes me realize that it's because he loved me first that he's helping me to grow out of my love for myself. For me sometimes this is the hardest of his disciplines.

These are lovely and I don't wish to take anything from what you have said because they are glimpses of God's love towards us. However, how do you apply the same OP question to someone who has suffered terrible things in life? What if your child is a new born and only has hours to live? What if you lose a loved one to cancer? What if a storm enters your life and it turns everything upside down? It's very easy when we life is hunky dorey but what about when it is the opposite? How can you relate the OP then because suffering is very much a part of many people's lives at this moment? Oh do I know how you feel, Little 1. Everytime I hear someone talk about God's beauty and tenderness and whatnot...my thoughts are immediately drawn to all the horrific pain and torture and suffering in the world, and I start to feel lousy. But these are Satan's thoughts- doing everything he can to convince us not to love God. I can't say God is entirely fair in the human definition of fairness. But nonetheless, he is right, and his plans for those who are saved will BEYOND make up for even the greatest agonies and pains. Heaven will be a love and a beauty beyond anything we can possibly imagine. That's one reason right there to love God!

The truth. He asks me to. (in His word) That is truth. Loving and setting aside time for him is an effort He initiates (suggests) and then when I actually apply the effort (with the strength He gives), He rewards me with a good, solid, worthy feeling, that I am not a mistake, and that I need not despair, even of life. To love Him, and yes, I say thank and worship Him, gives my life value, in a world where I often feel insignificant and useless. That communion also gives me strength to get chores done and everyday things that seem insignificant and unnecessary and uncreative.

This may appear a selfish answer, yet here goes- "What compels me to love God is the thought that I could destroy the works of the devil." The good old, good guy bug has bitten me. Have you heard of that group in NY called the guardian angels? I think they'd be worth a google. I am thinking in terms of something similiar to what they are about. Just a group of citizens that have decided to stand for right, and to make sincere effort to be in the right place at the right time, to stop hate, crime and injustice in a literal fashion. Now I don't know of a "christian" organization that operates in such a way- I know there are christian bikers, neighborhood watches and other citizenry that are concerned about the welfare and safety of their neighborhoods. I just like the thought of "Right" and "Might" working hand and hand through God's Holy Spirit to make the world more pleasant and safe for children and senior citizens as a local chapter or affiliate.
