I applaud what you're doing as well. I went through this in the mid-80's where, instead of burning them, I buried them. My friends all wondered if I'd fallen off my rocker and told me I should've given them to them. But why should I, when they're not promoting anything good? Lately, I've been re-thinking my position on several things, and the subject of music came up just today, so I'm still praying about it. No sense in giving the devil a foothold, right? Many songs, books, magazines, and other media are filled with secular humanism and post-modernism and we need to be very careful what messages we allow to creep into our lives that could compromise the message of the Bible.

My CatSmokey2006 I know how you feel whole heartedly ive been through the same situation. When I first did it I dont think I was led by the holy spirit, i was told it was wrong so I wanted to get rid of it and i did it all at once instead of gradually and guess what it didnt work, i went right back to it and lived my life as the world did. Now as a saved Christian I was led by the Holy Spirit, i wanted nothing to do with secular music, it does nothing for me or glorify God. So keep it up and replace the music with Christian or Gospel songs even Classical, keep you mind on God. Dont worry what others think this is for God and yourself, God will inded bless you. You dont look insane you just have a different preference in music! Read Psalm 81:1-2 maybe it will help.

ORIGINAL: MyCatSmokey2006 I thank you all for your advice and encouragement. I'm still getting rid of some of these things without too much trouble. I did tell one of my family members about why I was getting rid of them, but she said that I didn't need to because God gave us the gift of music or something like that. I'm still following what I feel God is leading me to do and that is to get rid of the things that cause me to idolize people or ideas instead of focusing on my heavenly Father. Some of the music I had trouble giving up included Garth Brooks and Shania Twain, both of whom are my favorite country singers. Their songs get my mind off track though, so that's why I got rid of them. Other music that I had no trouble getting rid of was my Kendalls CD's and records, with the songs "Heaven's Just A Sin Away" and "It Doesn't Feel Like Sinning To Me" on them. I felt the Holy Spirit's conviction when I played those songs, so I decided to get rid of them, along with lots of other music glorifying fornication, etc. It's hard getting rid of my favorite music, but I'm doing it to glorify God and that's what matters to me the most. if the words are singing ungodly things, then it would be good to get rid of the music, even if it is Shania Twain. Because when they sing, that is what you are hearing and yielding your ear to. Its hard at first, but once you take the plunge and dont mull over it, its easy. Take a scissors to the CD's so that you cannot get them back. its actually fun to cut up the CD's because each one I cut up made me feel free. I took a scissors to aboout $2,000 worth of sinful music and videos. it took about 4 days to do it since it was a big job. last week I cut down my tv stations to only 20 - to save money for other stuff and also it was taking up too much time. i can get some shows on the internet also. sometimes its good to purge yourself of baggage that we dont need. its only hard when you think about it.. but once you do it, its freeing. some people also say to sell it, but that is a bad idea. for one thing, if you do that, you are still holding on to them until they get sold. meanwhile, your mind is thinking, I can just keep THAT little one,, or if you give them to a friend theres a chance you might weaken and ask for them back. its best to take the scissors and cut them up and destroy them.. its easier to do a quick death than slow suffering. You just got to make up your mind to get rid of them, and not think second thoughts about it.. this is the way that you will be able to do it.

Melissa, I applaud you for following your convictions on this matter. When I first got saved, I got rid of all of my secular music. Then about four years ago I started letting some of it back in. It helped to have it out of my life for a while. Now I can use better discernment when purchasing or listening to music.

Getting rid of items that might cause you to stumble in your faith is always good. Getting rid of items that you're unsure of at the prompting of the Holy Spirit is God telling you that you need to do this for your own spiritual health. Doing this because it was urged on by "other Christians' admonishing words", that is entirely the wrong reason to do this. I read that this was only part of this, and yes, God can work through His people to let you know that he is moving His spirit in you, but if there is one thing I cannot stand it is the attitude of some christians that "I don't agree with this, therefore it's unGodly." These people would probably have an apoplexy if they walked into my house. I have some classic rock albums, and I read a lot of fantasy novels (Harry Potter included) that are full of magic. But God isn't threatened by those books. He's still far more powerful that those writers and He has given me insight to be able to discern how these books deviate from His books. I can enjoy them for the most part because believe it or not I'm not shocked when I encounter an opinion or belief system different than my own, but sometimes I do feel the prompting of the Spirit to get rid of certain books, and I follow it. Do this kind of thing for God alone, though. Never for other people and their legalistic ways of thinking.

I've considered getting rid of a good chunk of my music collection. Not because I think its the devil's work, but because I find the lyrics to much of the music I used to listen to very offensive now. I wonder how I listened to that stuff for so many years. Some people can tune out the words to songs, but I can't. A few years ago I threw away dozens of books on the occult that I had. This was the beginning of a life change for me. I don't regret tossing them one bit. I had considered selling them, but felt there were enough people selling lies these days. The music I will probably just sell. I don't view my old music in the same way as I viewed those books; I don't find anything wrong with my old music, its just personally offensive now. edit - to clarify I don't really think reading books on the occult is wrong either if you are doing it to gather information and gain insight. Reading all those books gave me mountains of knowledge and insight into what people find so great in the occult. Knowing where people are coming from is a good first step to bringing them to Jesus.

KingsRansom Why would you read somthing so evil, its witchcraft which is against God. Its not okay to read it let alone do it, you cant sugar code. Its saying I know its wrong to do magic but its okay to read on it and to fill your spirit up with that nonsense, no it may indeed lead you to try it and see if it really works or what it can do. This is my opinion i hope i didnt offend you, if so im really sorry.

IMA_Christian Its so great to hear others agreeing that its not okay to listen to anything, that it can affect you and bring you back into the world or get you thinking ungodly things. THanks for your comment it really uplifted me and not feel alone in believing this way!

ORIGINAL: PaleHawkWoman So, did you also toss out the works of William Shakespeare? Most of the tomes of classical literature and poetry? How about classic operas such as Aida and Madame Butterfly or Faust? and the bible -- it's filled with sex and violence and idolatry and murder and... anyway, "promoting" is also different than "presenting"... and even "christian stuff" can be idolatrous... regardless, all you can do (and indeed must do) is be obedient to what the holy spirit is speaking to you. personally, while i may not agree, and may even want to argue the point, i honour you for wanting to be obedient and will not judge you for it.
