Do you answer your door on beggers night?

Yes, lol, "Beggers night" = "Trick-or-treating." And, it is actually what they call it here.

If by that you mean trick-or-treaters, yes I do.

Begger's night???? Is this a local name for Halloween where you live, or something.

I've always answered in the past, but this year I'll be taking my son for his first trick-or-treating experience. I've waited a LONG time for this, and I plan on enjoying it.

No. We go find something to do like help out at out church's outreach, or go to dinner and a movie. I have some candy on hand for the few neighborhood kids who come very early, but I'm not interested in opening the door to the hundreds of trick or treaters we get in our area. They literally come in hoards here....lots are even dropped of by the carload from other areas. My neighbors routinely spend $50-$60 on candy and they are here from 4-10pm. I can't get behind Halloween enough to invest that much of my time or money in it.

I knew some people that used to give out gospel tracts with candy. Myself, I keep the lights out and watch a movie -_-.

Yeah, I got a Jack Chick tract one time in my bag about the evils of the Catholic church. It was "specially meant for me."

Not one of my favorite Halloween experiences as a kid.

Ouch, I have seen those tracts. There are some really good ones at http://www.atstracts.org/ that present the Gospel in a positive light.

Maybe I'm in the minority on this view, but I just don't see it right to be handing out the tracts to other people's kids, unless maybe you're doing a Halloween party at your church or something like that.

My logic is that some parents might be offended if they feel you're trying to shove your religious views on their kids. That can start something ugly. If you don't agree with Halloween, I can understand that, but I think there are better ways to go about fighting it than something of that nature.

We have a "no trick or treat" poster which we've put on our front door, which we got from our local police station. All UK police forces have put a poster on their website for people to download and put up on their front doors.

Ours is like the one on this webpage:

We hand out candy and tracts - my logic on this differs from you. This people that I don't know brought their child to my home to get a treat. I give them something sweet and that they will enjoy but also include a non-offense tract ( doesn't knock any religion or denomination, doesn't berate halloween - just tells the gospel) that simply tells the gospel. If they are offended, they have the option to not trick or treat at my house next year. But if one track helps one person, that carries a great weight with me than someone being offended for what I gave them when they came to my door.

I don't, but then in our neighborhood, if one leaves the lights off, especially the front porch light, the children know.

I see where you're coming from, but you also run the risk of turning someone off to your religious beliefs, too. I'll be honest, I might be biased, too, as I'm very anti-tracts from my past experiences.

I find the tracts to be offensive but I do know people who got saved after reading one. I have to agree with DeeAnn, although I wouldn't personally hand out a tract, if it reaches one persons heart its worth it.

we're usually at our "Fall Festival"...

though, from what I understand, we really don't have any "beggars" come knocking in our neighborhood....

cause they all go to our church (or one of the many other churches) who are doing a "fall festival"....

in our "urban" neighborhood, Iam sure that parents would much rather prefer the kids going someplace "safe" like church...than going "door to door".....

With many tracts I can agree with you but the ones we have are simple and very non-confrontational. They talk about the 'goodies' you get at Halloween and how that is a great time and so much fun, then they talk about the 'greatest treat/prize' you can ever receive and it is something that will never leave you.

There is a risk that you might turn someone off, yes, possibly. But there is also a risk that the person who gets this might not get another chance to see/hear the gospel.

One of the reasons I'm careful to give GOOD candy and a good bit of it, I don't want the children or the parents thinking - yeah instead of giving candy they gave a piece of paper. I always talk to the children and speak to the parents, I treat them as my honored guests. If they see I'm putting a tract in there and they don't want it, I don't force it on them.

Attitude can go a long way with things like that.

I've never seen tracts like that, but they sound better than what I expected. Good luck to you with them.

That's a good way to do it. I am a shy person and would probably rubber band the candy to a tract.

OK. I wondered if that was a regional thing, like "Sweetest Day," and such (I had a girlfriend from Ohio who used to mention holidays I'd never heard of, or call them by different names.... so I was wondering, but not sure.)

Well back home it just depended on what mood my parents were in, sometimes we would and than sometimes we would turn all our lights out so that they wouldn't come to the door...

Do that in North Dakota! On the right nights, you can watch them freeze to the ground before they run away.
