My son questions everything I say and do, and challenges me alot. He has Aspbergers though, so I know that it's not all boy related. He loses his privileges and he does get disciplined very regularly, and he'll mellow out for maybe a day or two, and then he is back to being himself. That being said, I'm just saying that I understand your frustration.

Our state has mail in ballots. We received our ballots about 3 weeks ago, and our personal ones are mailed in, but as of yesterday, in most of the counties here, less than 50% of the ballots had been turned in. Hopefully the rest of the voters will drop off their ballots today.

I do miss going to the polls a bit. I think that last time I took my child to the polls, she was an infant. My kids are 12 and 10 now and this is the prime time for them to see their parents participate in electing officials.

I used to take my kids with me to the polls as well. We also have mail only ballots, but there are drop boxes. I don't like to have to pay to vote, even if it's only a stamp, so I always drop mine in a ballot box. We have one 1/2 a mile away. I voted yesterday. I do not want to watch tv today. Election day is too stressful for me.

My husband is stressed over the election. I am not. I don't know why it is worth getting stressed over since they is nothing you can do besides vote, which we already did.

Did I mention my husband has a job interview for a promotion? His interview is on Thursday. I am trying not to be nervous about it. We would have to move about two hours from here. The kids don't like that idea and neither does my mother. I don't like the thought of moving, but if that's what the Lord has for us, then so be it.

I want to hook up our antenna, but I don't want to at the same time. I will probably do it later today so that I don't get sucked into it while I have other things to get done. It is stressful to me, too. I had of a lady tell me she is not voting because she doesn't want to vote for the lesser of two evils because it is still voting for evil. I understand what she is saying, but at the same time, I don't and that way of thinking made me nervous.

We went out and voted about 9am- I was #470 honey was #491. I voted for Prez + Straight Rep, you have to vote prez separately from the Straight Rep tix in NC... I was a bit confused about the judges and such- there wasn't anything indicating where the "Straight Republican" voting box STOPPED and the non-partisan voting stuff started and I had already colored in the "Straight Republican" box and did not want my vote being tossed because I voted that as well as marking each box individually... and my luck- that's what woulda happened. Jerry took 20 people longer because he had the same issue BUT had not filled in the straight rep box so he went through and colored in EVERY DOT! That was A LOT of dots!

SCHOOL:

JD age 9 has "Lost" his work *AGAIN*

Jeremiah age 11(Nov 29) Waits TWO WEEKS to tell me he "doesn't get it" I got to explain that is what happens when you CHEAT! You don't LEARN!!!

Jeromy age 12 Is not feeling challenged. Least that's the idea I am getting from him. I am going to assign BOTH Jared and Jeromy to type up a paragraph about their history lesson(Same lesson) with some links and email it to me weekly. I have a few other ideas for stepping it up for him as well.

Jared age 14 Is just going through the motions. His head is so not where here is a lot of the time. He'd rather tell me about thermite and napalm and guns and knives right now than history--- UNLESS history is about WEAPONRY!

Triss age 16 JUST GOT HER DRIVERS LICENSE!!!!!! Jerry took her down yesterday. She passed first try! I was really expecting her to flunk it. She gets so nervous. Oh School- yeah, she is acing her Drawing I class as well as her Digital I class. Her chorus prof is going to be MUCH disappointed to find that her Drawing II class is gonna blow Chorus II class outta the water next semester. BUT she is going to take the 3 CH class over the 1 CH class fer sure- Her work @ home is all about National Novel Writers Month during November so she is in HOG HEAVEN! Her goal is 50,000 words and she is almost halfway there NOW!

Trill age 18- Graduate- She is carryin' a 4.0----- before you figure in her online geography class She is going to pass it with a C but only just. the quizzes and exams are done in such a way that she freezes up and totally runs out of time. 50 ? out of 100 ? completed. She is looking at her English requirements for next semester and finding that all but 3 classes are online. She is going to talk to her adviser about doing argument based research as opposed to literature based research they are the same level with the same Pre-req's and argument based is the opposite of the literature based as far as the number of classes IN CLASS and ONLINE so there are more options for taking it on campus.

Lil Ol Me? I am still plugging away and pushing my fellow classmates with my CDO *wink*. I am out of town from the 14th-20 so I have to get my project that is due that week DONE this week... Meaning I had to corral the prof and get the demonstration done a week early. She did not mind so much but the others are sitting with the project that is due this week(yesterday actually) in front of them scowling as they have to stop and come watch the demo. The Prof did extend their deadline til Wednesday because she was taking valuable crunch time from them to show the new technique. I finished 2 of the 3 prints in class and brought the 3rd one home to tone in kool aid. I lucked out and found some Easter egg dye at the salvation army too! made for a lovely hand toned floral print. I have to get some more 5x7 mats or some more mat board to cut more 5x7 mats myself.

Jerry is watching a shoot-um up with the boys right now. We are enjoying just having him HOME. He was talking about working in the yard all day today- God sent RAIN so they are all piled up in the living room floor.

Ezri, we managed to move twice in the past month or so... and the last time it was to late to register to vote. In MI ya can only register up to 30 days before the election. I really wanted to vote, too!

quote:

You should be able to contact some renters rights organization on that

I don't even think there is one around here. I told Dh that we should move to the next county. They have a Housing Code Authority that inspects houses before people can rent them to other people. the problem is that rent is a lot higher than where we are right now.

Well, I guess the moral of the story is not to rent from people who are over 80 years old.
That lady actually mailed us back the rent check and security deposit. We got it in the mail today.(Did I mention that she sent us a letter and told us to move out because we didn't pay the rent and security deposit?) I could tell that it was the same check we gave her when we moved in because I could see it through the envelope. I told Dh that we aren't even going to open the envelope with her handwriting on it. He doesn't want to go to court on this because no matter how idiotic the owners act, they win in the end. SO we rented a storage and are going to try to see if we can get rid of some of the stuff we have (like boxes and boxes, etc, of books) and just put it in storage for now. We didn't get the house because someone else was making an offer on it. It was a bank repo for $14,900 a very good price for a two story house with garage.
If anyone had cash, this would probably be an excellent time to invest in real estate. I told Dh that we ought to have that much in the bank but we are always helping someone up. I guess we have treasures stored up somewhere, just not in the local bank.
Cindy, thanks!

I read this article by John Piper and it gave me a totally different perspective on the election. I voted early and I am purposely NOT going to watch any election coverage or news today. It's just too much and my part is done. I have a dvd of Lost in Space we got from Netflix and that will be what we're watching tonight.

ez...sounds like y'all are having fun with Jerry home. Tell Triss congrats on the drivers license!

As I have mentioned, my son was tested for Aspergers. They did not find a sure diagnosis, but he shows many of the signs.
He said that "being smart" is the only thing that he is "good at". I told him that he is not "good at that" because he is not putting the effort forth. I also told him that he needs to just be a kid, and not sorry about what he is good at, which for him means better at than the "other person" in the room. If I tell him to do something, or correct him or his work, that makes him feel like he is not "smart" so he has to prove his point. Umm, no, he is a child and certainly does not need to be smarter than me. And it is not about right and wrong. Just about doing your best. It's frustrating.

My son is rather bent on doing the opposite of almost everything I tell him to, even if it's for his benefit. The latest question I ask him alot (which he tries to use on his older sister when she's not doing what he wants her to do) is "Are you being a help or a hindrance?"

I will be so glad when all of these boys are grown. Then all of us mother's can color all of the gray hair they are causing us, and go on a 3 month cruise!

(((Melissa))) - it's so hard when they're argumentative! Mine are sometimes like that with me, but usually are with each other. I've told them that they make it no fun to live here & how would they like it if Dad & I fought as much as they do. They still don't seem to get it though!

All our talk of boys & their attitudes reminds me of an older & wiser lady that once tol me that the things that drive you crazy about your kids when they are younger will serve them well when they become adults. I sure hope that's true!

Ez - Congrats to Triss on passing her driver's test!!! And yea for God sending the rain so Jerry could stay inside with you all!!

We are OH residents, so we vote absentee. Sent ours in a few weeks ago! It cost $1 each to mail them! Not a big deal, but kind of a pain. It was funny because we mailed them on Columbus day, from the kiosk in the lobby of the post office. While we were waiting for the ladies in front of us to finish up, at least 4 or 5 people came in thinking the post office was opening & walked out muttering that they didn't even know it was a holiday. It pays to have dh work for the federal gov't - we always know when the holidays are!!

Amen to that!!

Today was a much better day. He struggles with putting pencil to paper so much, especially with math. We can recite the answers to his sister's algebra problems from the other room without looking at the problem, but he cannot do the simple problems in front of him.
Today I sat beside him, and said, "hey, look at this problem, what is this?" and "what is that?" and he answered me... so I started breaking it down into simple steps. Then I started writing a problem and having him tell me the steps, then I would have him write the next problem, and we would solve it together. We took turns writing the problems, and we got is math done SO quickly!
I told him that this is why I homeschool... so we could do it together, and I told him that if he will give me the attention and respect that he gave me today, then I will work with him like this on his math more often (I told him I cannot promise every day), but often. It went very well.
I know that he needs the one-on-one attention, and today it seemed to click. I know that God has given me some insight because hubby and I have been praying for answers.
We took it easy on school today. Most of the school around had no school today. We did history, math and finished our current events study of elections, etc.
We plan to watch the results tonight, if not too late. I printed a map with the number of electoral votes by each state, and found a list of how each state normally votes (red, blue and swing). They outlined the states in red, blue or yellow (for swing) and as the results come in, they are going to color it in and see how the results line up with the "normal".
It has been fun to take a diversion from the usual stuff to study this as it is so relevant to what is going on.

HA!!! Somedays I wonder if I will survive raising these boys! But, yesterday I was talking with my coach, telling him that eventually I want to do an Ironman, but it will ahve to wait. It will be 10yrs until ds4 is out of the house. YIKES!!! That's not that long!

The plan is to stay up tonight to watch election returns. However, I'm not sure I can stay up that late! Plus, I have a bad feeling about how things will turn out and I don't know if I want to watch.

Now I'm all worried with you all talking about stamps and ballot boxes, my absentee ballot envelope said No Postage Necessary if Mailed in the US. I checked three times, but now I'm worried.
I am really not going to want to go to work tomorrow though. Most people in my shop are more liberal than I ever knew it was possible to be. Any outcome is going to be overly discussed.

Anyway, we've done 53 days of "official" school so far, I'm happy.

Ellie,

The History is one of the Teaching Company lecture series on DVD, the high school level fertile crescent one.

You know that asking Jared to WRITE me a paragraph would be useless. LOL! The emailing a short paragraph(even if only 3 sentences) on what the history lesson covered and the answers to some of the 10-15 questions included in each lesson(even if only 3) PLUS a link from some site online showing that they have "looked it up" would show that they are applying the lesson to their brains in more ways than just the one. AND encouraging them to RESEARCH the topics.

ETA: and I don't have to keep up with more PAPER! It is in my email folder and I can pull it up and print it if I have need of it printed- but I probably won't have that need.

I'm not sure which I think is harder - depends on the day I guess. I will say that my dd is definitely more "high maintenance" than my ds! She's only 10, but I can definitely see hormonal issues cropping up. Ds went through a "hormonal" period a year or so ago, but has calmed down a lot since then. I think each has their unique challenges & of course each kid is different whether they are both boys or both girls, but anyone who says boys & girls are just the same hasn't had both a boy & a girl living in their house!

I'm not sure if I want to watch the election coverage or not either. I get really frustrated with the way the candidates are portrayed & the obvious leanings of most of those who are reporting it to us!! One thing - I won't miss all the commercials, mail & phone calls!!

With my daughter, most of the issues are related to hormones. I can relate to that, and we often laugh about it. That does not mean that I don't want to send her to a boarding school at times (LOL). But with my son, his issues are different, his attitudes are different (not that they are not hormone related), but it is much tougher, and he is not a teen yet!

We didn't have a lot of political commercials this year and I only got one phone call. I'm sure Obama figures he has Illinois in the bag, so why bother.

Depends on the kid. My son has been more difficult than both girls combined since he was born. He has received more spankings than both of my daughters combined as well. I hope he mellows with age. My 14yo dd isn't too hard. My 11yo dd has hit puberty and there is some drama, but it's not that bad. Still my 9yo son is the hardest to raise.

my son has definitely been a bigger challenge to raise than my daughter. That was noticeable 3 days after his first birthday and he's been a challenge ever since. I love him, but he is more of a challenge

I wouldn't say that either the boys or the girls have been easier, just different.

I'm not watching the election coverage. The SRN station in Cleveland is running Hugh Hewitt's program, so we're listening to that via internet.

Krispy Kreme gave a free donut to everyone who voted today. Of course since we're in there anyway we gotta buy more donuts and drinks, right? Our free donuts cost $17 by the time the smoke cleared, but they are yummy.
