Sorry if anything I said offended anyone. I was just answering the OP as their situation is so close to mine.

What exactly has degraded? These are discussion boards, where topics are discussed, and some of the views may run counter to our own. I hardly call that "degrading".

OK, it is obvious that I have offended many on this board. And I will admit that making such a statement as "wishing Hillsong would go out of business" is extreme to say the least. And for that I apologize and ask your forgiveness. (and please note that I have deleted my post)

In the part of the US where I live, SG music is almost non-existent as far as the churches are concerned. And if you dare request for hymns, SG songs or anything traditional for that matter be incorporated into a service, you are considered a troublemaker, an outcast, someone who is not interested in reaching the lost, etc, etc, etc. Frankly, I am tired of people like me who need to be ministered to as well being labeled something other than normal. Both styles of music can be blended in a service. The problem is the P/W side isn't willing to work with the SG side and vice versa in most cases. Not all but most.

Ps103, thank you for correcting me, however I will comment that when someone makes a post like this one, that it is inevietable that someone like me will come along and begin a debate/discussion like this one. I would recommend that you take that into consideration and possibly delete such a post/thread when it comes up as it will usually give way to discussions such as this one.

bigd1974, I agree with your assessment of how many churches treat this, and it's a shame.....so many songs from various sources can compliment each other, there's really no need for anybody to be left out in the cold as far as having their favorite musical style represented as a part of corporate worship....

It's very troubling to me that a thread about Love for Southern Gospel has degraded to this.

But the original post was not so much about a love for SG, it was more about a complaint against non-SG music.
Take a look again:

quote:

My church, though located in Texas, is among the mega-churches embracing P&W and CCM while barely acknowledging SG. Our music Sunday mornings is a compilation of P&W and a couple verses from one of maybe 10 hymns. More often than not that hymn is Amazing Grace with the P&W addition of "My Chains are Gone." SG and hymns are associated with the senior citizens as though someone in their 20's or 30's may not like that style.

Rightly so, another poster mentioned that, basically, at the core of spirit and truth worship lies NOT our personal preference for a music style, but our very heart of worship to God who is worthy of receiving praise and worship.
Music is cultural, God is not. Therefore it's common for man, in his desire to worship God, to seek that which is culturally acceptable and comfortable to himself. A Southern Gospel fan in a non-SG environment is probably going to be disappointed because they'll feel that their style of worship is not being satisfied. While there's no crime in this, the bigger picture should be one of 'is God satisfied with my worship?'. Am I standing around bummed out because we're not playing songs that I like OR am I grateful again to be in the presence of God and in the fellowship of His people, able to worship Him freely with little regard for persecution?

Go to India or Mexico or China and you'll find lots of people worshiping God but probably none of them doing so with a Gaither-penned song. Many of those people are risking their very lives to go to a Christian church that hardly has walls, a roof and a floor not made out of mud.
Yet we'd complain because we don't like the music...

If singing SG songs (or whatever) in church means that much to someone then I'd recommend that they find a church that sings Southern Gospel songs (or whatever). I would caution us all, though, that we not worship the worship (eewwww, the stinging pain!) and instead worship the One whom is worthy regardless of culture and style.

I would submit that we would all be better off if we would cease bickering over musical styles and just choose music that is worshipful and God honoring, no matter the style.

Since when did worship become about OUR petty little tastes, anyway? Shouldn't it be about pleasing God, who is after all, the subject of our worship?

I'm thankful that in my church they have chosen that route, to simply pick songs that are conducive to an atmosphere of worship, and let style worry about itself....

And who is going to tell us which music pleases God?

I would submit that any music which honors God, seeks after Him, and praises Him above all else would be pleasing to God.

John 4:23-24 “But the hour is coming and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Ephesians 5:18-21 “And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God.”

Colossians 3:16-17 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

Psalm 71:22-23 “…Also with the lute I will praise You—And Your faithfulness, O my God! To You I will sing with the harp, O Holy One of Israel. My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing to You, and my soul, which You have redeemed.”

Certainly don't disagree with this.

Some people like to honor, seek and praise God with hymns, others with P&W, others with SG, and so forth. It's all good, but somebody has to pick the songs.

We can add the lute and harp as needed.
