author's note - please, do NOT take this as insulting, belittling, or sarcastic. I'm just wanting to paint by letters here. Thanks. We decided the date at the Cafe de la Large Portions to be an almost total bomb. However, the bookstore was very quick thinking on my part, and was such a rescue that it might become a nice way to bring an evening to a close. I was surprised when you said sure, let's go out again (though not at all with the emphasis NO Jack & Jill). I'd agreed to pick you up at 7:30 PM, and it is 7:28 PM when you hear the sound of my humming Nissan 700 ELEX electric car. Just for fun, I'd wired in a speaker under the hood, and make the car purr a little like an old Camaro so your parents and you hear I'm there. The things he does to make him think he's not in a green world now, you think. You do wear contacts, hear the car stop humming, the car door close, and as you are putting the last one in, the disposable lens slips and slides down the sink and into the drain. The doorbell rings, you hear your dad answer it, and now I'm starting to meet the folks! On your second date with me. Do you take another minute, get another contact out, get it on, and come downstairs hoping there's been no damage done in all the meetings, or forget the lens in a panic and come downstairs half-blind, to try to recover 'control' of the evening and get moving away from the house? I'm not likely to know whether you are 'one-eyed' or not, yet you usually get a whopper headache when you just go with one lens, or one pops out and you don't have another. No out with the headache... that white candy got used up while babysitting this afternoon. Thanks for you responses! OneJohn410

Definitely, I'd get the contact. You could chat with my parents for a while. They're pretty nice and wouldn't put you on the spot!

I'd fix my contacts. Or whatever little problem I was having. I'd also acknowledge your presence and let you know I'll be right out.

quote:
ORIGINAL: Grace-N-Mercy Well, I've been around long enough to know that I have to be FUNCTIONAL to go out... and that means having two contacts. A date is no fun if I have a headache all day, and I'm not going to keep that a secret. As nervous as I may be on a second date, I'd probably lift my voice just enough to be heard (not yelling) and just let you get to know the parents. They're great people, you'll enjoy them. In the meantime, I'm reaching for my box of new contacts... I never let the box get empty as that would be disastrous. No rush from me... I'm a southern lady and we don't rush. It was an unexpected treat to meet them, and I'm not in a rush to leave. I've practiced up some conversation starters and follow-ups for such instances, so you find the three of us in some friendly conversation as it is time to go. quote:
ORIGINAL: rgod Definitely, I'd get the contact. You could chat with my parents for a while. They're pretty nice and wouldn't put you on the spot! Same as the above. I'm not one to sit out in the car and not come to the door when I can. It's just a surprise to be meeting parents on the second date following possible news of an extremely unique first one. quote:
ORIGINAL: LovebirdsFlying I'd fix my contacts. Or whatever little problem I was having. I'd also acknowledge your presence and let you know I'll be right out. Everyone is so trusting of their parents not saying or doing something embarrassing, it's wonderful. You all are not ashamed of them, or leary of what conversations may take place with them in the future. It would be comforting to hear that you are indeed in the house, and didn't go out the back door and are in my car while I'm chatting with your parents. quote:
ORIGINAL: solo_soprano22 I think I'd find another contact first. thank you, another get my eyes set. quote:
ORIGINAL: Ps103 Hmmmm, if I were young enough to be living at home, you would have met my parents the *first* time you came, and if damage was done, well, you clearly ain't the one for me Regardless, I would get a new contact lens in my eye and expect my date to be charming enough to entertain my parents/children/dog/neighbors/whoever was in the general vicinity. Hi, Ps103, I did and always do take some liberty with these... and I like that thinking, though the thought of me introducing someone who had asked me out on a date for the first time (me still the guy) to my parents is just backwards. Yet as you set it up, it the guy is too timid to meet your parents before the first date, then when? might be your thought, and why not? Thanks for sharing! Thanks, Hisprincess59. All I need to know is when I would be meeting your parents, if it was before the first date or the second, or most likely both? Hi Artemis, The way I write these up transcends real life actuality, mostly so I can get an answer about the same situation from everyone. So with that in mind, disposables do work just fine for you, you do have extras, so there's no about this one, just a kind of or or about what to do. That being the case, I'll pencil you in on the let me know you are alive, take another minute, I talk with the folks, and there you are rtg. Is that a fair guess? Stimulus, thank you. Such intriguing and wonderful things I've learned about you all from your parents while talking with them. And to think everyone wants good eyesight for themselves and in no means to question my driving skills in my sporty little electric car.

I am totally just like you, my dad won't let me go out with a guy until he's met him and I value his opinion, so buckle down, you would have met my parents BEFORE our first date!

Thanks for your reply. Seeing how that could be your brother's picture hanging on the wall there (#15), I wouldn't run out of things to talk with them about before you were downstairs.

I think I'd forego the other contact, come downstairs, make a quick introduction, read you your rights, then leave you in the hands of my parents, then dashed upstairs to put on my other contact. I'll make sure to take some extra time to beauty myself, as my parents would definitely want to grill you; even hook you up to the polygraph. Wouldn't that be a fun start to the evening?

That would be a fun evening, indeed. I am well versed on the books in print... How to grill your daughter's date before the date begins.... and also 'Watching your daughter go out with dummies for the less informed. Polygraphs... well, it works for others using different wording.... I don't lie. So they'd burn those little ink pens and paper tracing paper for nothing. I may not tell the whole truth... but then again I may tell it.

I'd scream, "Hey, I'm in the bathroom! Come help me!" And my parents would look at you and mutter some kind of apology but you'd know I was strange and blunt and unembarrassed about such things and come anyways laughing most likely.

With out a doubt I would put my other contact in first. Then I would have to fix my make up on the eye that I messed up while trying to get my contact in. I put my contacts in and then comes the makeup :) You my as well meet the folks, my father: a very nice guy, very friendly, can put the fear in you quick if need to be...and most of all I highly value his thoughts/opinions. My mother would need a face to have in mind while she prays for you :) I am very close with both of my parents, they are a reflection of who I would like to be!

Hi Anamchara, I like your username. It's got a Celtic kind of sound to it... at least I know of a band named Clannad with an album titled Anam. Thanks for your reply. I like meeting new people, and I'm sure I'd pose for a picture for your mom, too, if it was asked for. I'm guessing no matter how things go in the house, I'm likely to hear about the stupid lens manufacturer and all whatever else is needed to be vented as we are departing your house so that it doesn't have any lingering power over the date- and I'm a better than average listener. quote:

OneJohn.. fortunately for you I havnt lived with my parents for several years now! No picture posing would be requested :)...but if I did live with them that gives you a feel for what you would be up to! I am sure my parents have high standards, I have high standards. It is nice to meet you as well. Anamchara..to be translated as your soul friend. Being a good listener of course is a good quality to have, I need to be a better one. I have a tendency to talk more than my fare share. :(

Roberta, the third degree from a teenage daughter could prove to be fairly exhausting! I'd have to quickly find some common ground both she and I were fairly knowledgeable on. Anamchara, what's fun with this forum is I can create a kind of alternate reality for you and others to respond from being within it... as there's no way of telling who may choose to do so. I just am trying to set things up so I might hear some unique takes on things. One thing I've read more than once and try to practice is response to 'God gave you two ears and one mouth. Why do you suppose that was so? Answer- so that you could listen twice as much as you speak.' I tend to over-listen at times. Still, I think that with your intriguing user name and our conversational styles, we might have a fun second outing (without Jack & Jill, if you've read the other ones). Ebony! Hey my friend. Well, for some silly reason in this post, I just wanted the gal to be having difficulty upstairs in the restroom when the guy came to pick her up, and so for this example, you are wearing contacts- and no makeup, too, huh? Well, I don't wear contacts or makeup either, so I guess we are rtg.

I live by myself in my own mondo condo and I have done this more than once! (Dropped the contact down the drain). I would let you in the door, tell you the situation and then try to retrieve it. If I still lived with my mom, she would grill you with all sort of uncomfortable questions and you'd be praying for me to finish up and come out fast! I am though usually done way ahead of time on a first date with my make up...contacts and such.
