Let me give you an interesting contrast.

My immediate family's church - low-key pentecostal, with a lot of new and younger people in the contemporary services. In one of those services, the pastor emphasized the responsibility to vote, that this election would be a significant one, and that we should pray and ask God for wisdom regarding our choices. And the church has designated Tuesday as a day of prayer and fasting.

My MIL called me last night. She seemed so happy about how her church handled it. Their church is in the south - independent with Methodist roots. Mainly country-club seniors. Not racially diverse at all. They have become much more in line with evangelical Christianity in recent years.

This is how she related it to me.

The pastor told the church that voting was nothing more than you expressing a personal choice as to who you would like to see as president. And everyone will make their own individual choice. Basically, that there was no right or wrong, that the major decision factor was "who you'd like to see as president." People were applauding, according to MIL.

Nothing about praying, seeking God, asking for wisdom, considering what the bible says on issues.

We were visiting a church. The sermon was on communion and its significance and practice. There was no comment on the election. *shrug*

I don't think there was any comment on the election at my church either.

I've been sick for a few days, so I didn't go, but any times it's come up, it's been broached with a fair amount of skepticism and non-commitment towards both parties.

My pastor spoke on respecting those in authority over us as they are placed there by God. He spoke that saying the country will be doomed if either party won or saved if either party won was putting too much trust in man and not enough trust in God. He preached from Acts 28(?) where Paul is under house arrest and that he worked within the system of government he was under and still respectful to those in the system even when they were persacuting him.

During his announcments, the only thing he mentioned was a question on the ballot that we should vote against, which is bringing slots and gambling to the state of Maryland to fund education. Former Governor Erhlich(R) was pushing this and they wanted to dump most of the venues in Prince George's County (predominately African American and Hispanic county). The residence of PG County was not having it so we shot it down. It was kind weird though because Mike Steele, Lt. Gov at the time is a resident of PG County also, but I think he was actually supporting this non-sense. Anyway he said I cannot tell you who to vote for, but I can tell you to vote against Question 2. We all know how destructive gambling can be especially when it is presented to those who think they have no other way to get rich. He talked about its addictive nature and how it has destroyed families. With PG county being predominately Black/Hispanic with the highest concentration of middle class African Americans in the country, we see this as a way to not only take our money, but a way to further damage an already delicate situation in our community, the stability of the black family. There has to be some other way to fund education besides legalizing gambling. I think this was the nail in the coffin for former Governor Erhlich and the reason why he ended up losing to O’mally. I thought he was actually a good Governor, but this is one thing I flat out disagree with him on.

So far that was the only thing he has mentioned from the pulpit about the election or any election over the past 2 years.

that is EXACTLY what our pastor talked about (Briefly)....voting our values....vote with our concience and our Christian beliefs....and praying.

Our "chapel" will be open from 6:30am-Midnight tomorrow, on Election Day, for anyone who wants to come.....to pray for the country, and be able to do that along with other fellow Christians and church members....

He asked for a "show of hands" of those who have ALREADY voted....well over 75% (of the 5,000+ that were there in that service) raised their hands....

Nothing from ours. I personally would have liked some time spent on it, but oh well.

Well, here you would have heard more than most would like to here.

Obama is a "fraud". McCain isn't perfect, but more in line with
a biblical line. He's not in biblical line, but "more in line" than Obama.

Bottom line: Vote McCain/Palin.

We only have one hard core democrat couple in our group which is small.
But, they have been given enough facts to vote for McCain/Palin.

I think I have successfully turned the majority of us into "independents."

Well, that's great. So did mine. Hopefully, all those who call themselves Christians and were preaching in the position of pastor yesterday did so by preaching the word of God.

IMO, our political choices, just like all of our actions, should be a result of our faith and our values.

Then pastors should be concerned with teaching the word of God so that our faith and values are strengthened and know that through strong faith we will have the discernment to make the right choices. A pastors job is not to teach us about politics. If you want to know where your pastor stands on politics the correct place to do that is over coffee, not on the pulpit.

I think a pastor can teach, from the bible, how we seek wisdom regarding political decisions.

BTW - our sermon was not on the topic of politics this week. This was a brief announcement at an earlier point in the service. And, all things considered, wasn't what I described that our pastor said, rather apolitical?

My pastor didn't tell us how he thinks we should vote. He preached from the Bible on respecting the government no matter who it is.

When I attended this weekend, the leader who taught said nothing about voting: he concentrated on the Word, on the people in the Scriptures that were read, and on how we are to comparatively conduct ourselves as believers. After all the announcements were over, one of our leaders, deliberately without taking his place at the bemah, took the mike and said, "Vote!" He told us to get out and vote on Tuesday and not make any excuses -- just do it. End of subject.

We had an extended time of prayer for the elections. Just before his teaching he said whatever the outcome, God is still in control.

Yep, because Obama is going to cast open the gates of hell and bring upon us the darkness. This much has been foretold.

We went with Earthless...

FWIW, the local GOP had a prayer meeting tonight. My kind of people there...

I'll be out tomorrow waving a McCain sign...

Tomorrow's the day.

Not a peep. Not a mention. Absolutely all about Jesus.

I would say we are mostly conservative. Our church hands out a bullitin every election year with the candidates and their positions and that is it.

On the 4th of July we usually do some patriotic things, all based on the bible in one way or another.

I've never heard a political speach from the pulpit...maybe the conservative churches I go to just don't do thiose things...don't know.

Nothing. It's about Jesus, though we did pass out a paper contrasting the candidates.
