Kerr you are right. the big country stars 20k wouldnt pay the salaries the crew and band get per show. it isnt just a couple guys working setting up the shows. many times they have another whole concert being set up while the one in town a is being done((concert)). they are not the same as a SG group. I saw the hoppers in January and the members of the Church helped them set up and take the stuff down.

I hope that the fairness doctrine doesn't affect southern gospel radio. I'd hate to have to hear 12 hrs a day of Muslim music. Just kidding really, I think its only a conservative talk / liberal talk deal, not a music thing. But, I wouldn't put it past the liberal gov't to say that Christian music is not just music but a world view, and try to get it so that if you play x number of hours of christian music then you have to play x amount of another religions music.

This is an interesting thread to someone who is learning about the inside baseball aspects of SG. Some thoughts. quote:
But they have a live band A live band would draw a bigger audience. quote:
The important piece is that Southern Gospel artists need to be operating their group as a business. Point out any successful artist in Southern Gospel music and I can guarantee they understand the importance of taking care of business (literally). quote:
I know some people that went last week to see Carrie Underwood and payed $65.00 a ticket and bought (2) $30.00 Tshirts. Now I have heard these same people talk about a southern gospel artist Tshirts being $15.00 and probably drop $20.00 in the love offering plate. The lack of good business practices is hurting the business. And a good business practice is to not sell your product too cheap. quote:

As I was coming home from work Friday, I drove past the local civic center that was the site of a country concert. The artist ( and I can't remember who it was) had 2 buses and 2 semis for his gear and people.

A Gaither Homecoming concert has a whole fleet. From what I am able to observe Bill Gaither knows how to market his concerts. And how many groups are in a Gaither Homecoming?

The last one I went to GVB and SS sang 3/4 of the time. What few others he had there only got to sing 2 to 3 songs. He doesn't have as many groups at his concerts as he used to.

It used to be more, maybe 5 groups that would be headliners elsewhere. Go back maybe 5 years, and you would have had Gaither Vocal Band, Old Friends Quartet, Hoppers, Booth Brothers, Isaacs, maybe another group or two, and 3-5 solists. Now, the Gaither Vocal Band and Signature Sound are at every date, the Isaacs are there frequently, and a couple of solists (Ivan Parker, Janet Paschal, maybe Lynda Randle and Mark Lowry on certain dates). At a "big date," he'll still have the Hoppers, Booth Brothers, and Isaacs in, and now the Collingsworth Family, too. But it is downsized from what it used to be.

I am assuming that all this is done in a 2 to 3 hour performance. I can see where a top group would want to do more than 2 to 3 songs. And they could make more money in a concert with fewer groups.

Nope. It's more like 4 or 4-1/2 hours when you go to a Homecoming shindig. With fewer artists being on the program, you get to hear more from each of them. I haven't seen them with the Collingsworths yet.

How does he choose? I would consider GV and L5 at the same level of quality and popularity as the Booths Bros.

He doesn't choose entirely based on popularity. He chooses with an eye to his live programs: Does the artist bring something that fills a specific spot on the program? For example, I doubt he'd bring another family bluegrass group on as long as the Isaacs are on the tour. And I doubt he'd bring another high-energy male quartet on as long as EHSS is there.
