I can't believe some of the ridiculousness (like socialism ) still being moaned and groaned about. Stretches like that claim and others are part of why McCain lost. Obama talked about realities, McCain's campaign kept trying to throw out bait (Ayers, his birth certificate, "socialism," etc.), which, clearly, the nation did not take. "It's the answer that led those who have been told for so long, by so many, to be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve ... to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day." I thought the booing was pretty much exemplary of why the GOP lost. That behaviour (not to mention the fear-mongering and other petty, juvenile stunts of McCain supporters) is an embarrassment to intelligent grown folk everywhere, regardless of one's political views. It was refreshing to see some of the old McCain back, in his speech, I hope he will continue to be a leader in D.C. Obama's speech has set a marvelous tone for his presidency. I hope everyone who worked so hard, to get him elected, keeps at it to bring the ideas of hope and progress into reality. So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other. Let us remember that if this financial crisis taught us anything, it’s that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers – in this country, we rise or fall as one nation; as one people. Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. What happened to "Country First"? John McCain realized that part of "Country First" is standing behind our new President instead of being a sore loser. Kudos to him. ...or does "Country First" only apply when your guy wins? I sure didn't hear anything about "Country First" from the "OTHER SIDE" these past eight years.... most divisive and obstructionist "opposition" party there ever was... "Country First"? You bet. Making sure that Obama's agenda doesn't see the light of day. THAT is putting "America and Country First"..... A) I agree that Democrats did everything they could to "gum up the works" to prevent things for being accomplished. B) For YOU I see "Country First" was just a slogan. Obama has ALREADY been elected. Please tell me what good sour grapes does at this point. I do not see anywhere in the person's post to which you responded where he said something along the lines of "McCain would have probably been a bad president anyway" - which would have been a "sour grapes" type statement (where you despise what you cannot get). What you probably mean is "sore loser". Just because a person is not happy that Obama is president and says his concerns about it, etc. does not automatically mean that the person is a sore loser. I am not happy that Obama won...I am greatly concerned of the changes he is likely to implement (FOC act for one), etc... and this does not mean that I am a sore loser. It just means that I am greatly concerned about what will happen now with Obama as president.

One of the reasons many problems developed was that the GOP nominated the wrong guy in 2000. Completely agree. This is one Dem that probably would have voted for him in 2000.

Ayers, his birth certificate, "socialism," etc.), Obama's relationship with the likes of Ayers (and Wright, and Rezko, and Pflager, etc) were legit....as were the comparisons to socialism (which Barack's plans ARE). But the McCain campaign were not the one's behind the asinine birth certificate flap...

Obama supporters promised riots in the streets if he lost; Republicans have been with a few exceptions have been completely congratulatory. Saying otherwise is simply deceptive and unfair. And the myth that Republicans ever saw McCain as faultless is so laughable I have to conclude anyone who would say such a thing must have been asleep for the last two years and only woke up this morning to election results.

(groaning as I type) Congratulations to President-elect Obama. History was made. Note to the Republican "elites": Before you start putting all the blame for the McCain loss on Gov. Palin, please remember one thing. If it wasn't for her, the base would have been possibly MORE likely to either go 3rd-party or sit it out, which could have made this a LOT worse. They should be thanking her for the momentum the McCain camp had until the economic roller-coaster.

However, at the age of 43, I have a feeling that I won't see that in my lifetime.

I voted Rep because I disliked Obama slightly more than I disliked McCain and I do like Sarah Palin.

I've read them. :) I was exaggerating a bit, but I'm quite tired of the name calling. I've seen a lot of un-Christianity around here; I suppose when something happens that one doesn't agree with or another Christian supports another candidate, new sides of people come out. Same as in real life (sometimes). No surprise. :)

Obama supporters promised riots in the streets if he lost The only time I have heard that ridiculous speculation, in all my political sites and blogs, news watching and listening, etc. over these past few months was on this board/from McCain supporters. ETA: Just out of curiousity, I googled "obama riots." The first page of results, predicting riots, were all conservative sources (Fox News, Malkin, Limbaugh, The Conservative Council, etc.) - going back to the whole platform of fear, which contributed to McCain losing the campaign.

As a Brit, I think it's wonderful that Obama won. So glad the Republicans didn't get back in.

As I called it "ridiculous speculation," Jong falls straight into that camp. I was thinking more of legitimate sources of information, rather than "paranoid" and "obsessive" celebrities from decades ago.

Obama has been declared everything from a socialist and a marxist to a terrorist sympathizer. It's more apparent to people who support Obama.
