Steph, I probably would have told the little boy that it isn't about the Obama himself or what color his skin is, but what he stands for. There are many issues that presidents address and we try to vote for the president that we think will do things the way that we think that they should. It can bring about very strong feelings as many of the issues affect us as individuals and will affect the way we live. It has nothing to do with Obama's skin color. There was another man that is black who has ran for president for a couple of elections so far, and his name is Alan Keys. Many of the people who don't agree with Obama's ideas of how things should be handled would have loved to have Alan Keys as their president because his way of doing things was closer to the way they would do things. I wonder though, what would have happened if McCain had won and all the little girls had their eyes opened to the idea that they could do anything that they wanted and the rest of the class was grumpy because the African-American guy didn't win... Either outcome was going to break a long held barrier.

ORIGINAL: SovereignIsHe Tell them the truth... What truth? That one in four black men ages 18-24 are either on probation, in jail, or in prison? Or that there are more blacks and latinos in jail or prison than in college dorms? They may be too young to understand that the victimhood mentality will hurt their future more than actual racism. Oh, you meant the truth that they may be missing a little brother or sister and they can blame the new president for allowing their siblings to be killed. Maybe it's better they don't know the truth... Source LINK

I talked to my grand daughter last night. I asked her if she knew the difference between why her school voted the way it did and what happened that Obama got elected. She understood that the vote that elects people comes from those over 18 who made a choice to participate and that her schools vote was getting their opinion. She also understood that her (and her schoolmates) opinion was important. Then I asked why they voted overwhelmingly (3 votes for Obama) for McCain. She laid out the issues as well as I've seen them here in the forums! Rising unemployment because of a bad economy, taking people's money who have it and giving it to those who don't, and inexperience. I told her those were the very same reasons I voted the same way she did. I also explained a little bit about how this was also an historic time in the country, that a black man could be elected to lead the country, and how that was important even if we disagree with some of his policies. I'm so proud of her!
