ORIGINAL: utilityfielder I have always heard that a copyright is for 28 years and renewable for another 28 years. Does anyone have any knowledge on this. That was true....in 1976. LOL. That was about the time I studied it in school. Thanks Kerr for the link.

ORIGINAL: BillBaileyBFAFan It seems to me as though all these copyright issues really started with the internet. I guess record companies used to be concerned only about people making and selling bootleg tapes, not so much me and my buddy making each other tapes of our favorite songs. Now with the internet and peer to peer sights, and torrent downloading, companies feel it in the wallet more. I really admire preachers and teachers who don't copyright thier material, such as Kent Hovind and the Late Dr. Jack Hyles, and others. They all say to feel free to copy and distribute the material, since getting the word out is more important than the few dollars they'd lose. Can you imagine a SG artist say that? That they'd be more concerned about people hearing the message than making every dollar possible. There is a difference: All a preacher has to do is hook a microphone up to a tape / CD / digital audio recorder, convert the file to mp3, and click the upload button on his preferred site. SG artists' projects take thousands of dollars to produce. And yet, every now and then a SG group will give away free downloads of an individual song or complete album to anyone who wants it. The Old Paths, in particular, did that with my website once. That's awesome about the OPQ, I really commend them for that. It warms the heart to hear these kinds of stories about groups. And, let me clarify the preacher example. I'm not talking about sermons online( which I love and download the heck out of) but about videos that have been produced for DVD and sold. These may not be as expensive as an album, but there is considerable expense in the research, travel, time, videographers, and the like. What alot of the speakers/preachers say, or put on the website is basically, buy this and make copies for your friends, family, coworkers, anyone who needs to hear the message.

It is so hard to find the balance between business and ministry. I'm like you in wishing groups would not have a problem with at least songs being copied and given to groups but I can understand their concern. I'm sure the groups would love to get the message out to people but, as Daniel pointed out, they can't afford to be hit financially. At the same time, I know groups who have given away CDs to people who needed ministered to or encouraged. That speaks a lot right there.

In fact, I've either personally seen or heard of virtually every group giving a CD or two to someone who could really use the encouragement. It's just that they can't afford to do that for everyone. Even if they worked another job (which would leave them fully on the go 7 days a week!), they would still need to sell a decent portion of the CDs to recoup duplication costs.
