I must admit, I have wondered if it's just as wrong to take advantage of an already opened package. It's like......being a party to the crime?!?!

You know what, I think it's all a moot point. The whole discussion on sizes being bigger or smaller or stretchier or whether or not we like the way merchandised is package is irrelevant--the bottom line is that's it's not our stuff. We have no right to do what we want with someone else's stuff, no matter how idiotically they packaged their stuff. It's not our stuff, plain and simple.

And all I am saying is that goes both ways. They have an obligation not to cheat their customers, which is exactly what they are doing.

If you feel they are cheating their customers, you need to contact customer services and complain. I've never felt cheated by the retailer, only by inconsiderate customers who have opened packages so that half of the contents fell out all over the store before Imade it to the check-out counter.

So, is it wrong to open an egg carton and make sure none are broken before buying them?

If it's okay, what do you do if some are broken?
1. Pick a different carton
2. Swap them so all the broken ones are in one carton
3. Report the broken eggs to the customer service person
4. Other

I am not a swapper, but I will check to make sure things are as they should be. I will not unpeel tape, etc. but if is the type of packaging that can be opened without being "unsealed" I will check to make sure it's the right size, not broken, etc.

So, I am not breaking the rules here, but I still think manufacturers owe more of a duty to the customers. It is ridiculous that half of the underwear I bought doesn't fit, despite being labeled the same size from the same manufacturer.

I would switch, but I have no way of knowing if other manufacturers are any better, so I could still end up throwing half of them away from someone else. At least I know it's only half with the brand I buy.

Eggs: No. You aren't breaking any seals or damaging any packaging. Furthermore, you are doing what is recommended by the store. My checkers will often check my eggs for me.

If I find some are broken, I set the carton aside and pick a different carton. (Incidentally ... I believe the number of cracked eggs is partly due to the way the egg cartons are stored. Why does my store place them vertically???????? Seems dumb to me.)

What Christine said--you aren't breaking any seals or damaging a package when you check to see if eggs are broken.

Eggzactly! I'll even wiggle the eggs a bit to make sure they're not broken on the bottom. It's totally expected.

Random, they don't expect you to by damaged merchandise, which a broken egg would be. It's not even the same thing.

Never said it was the same thing, I'm simply asking a question to determine where "the line" is.

Underwear that doesn't match the size it says on the label is "damaged" too, btw. The only difference is that you can't tell without trying them on, unlike an egg, which is obvious.

If there were 12 egg cartons, and each one had one broken egg, would it be wrong to swap and put all 12 broken ones into one carton?

I think the dairy guy would probably do something like that, so why would it be wrong?

I leave the egg-swapping to the employees of the store.

"The line" is when the packaging is damaged or a seal is broken in order to open it up.

If you are concerned about the packages having different sizes, ask an employee if you can and/or what the return policy is.

For instance ... my dog is picky when it comes to treats. When we were training her we bought several different training style treats that she just didn't like. So we went to the store and said, "She's picky, so these treats are motivating for her. Are there any samples we can try?" The answer, "Only on the 'buffet' bar, but you still have to pay for it. But if you buy a package and she doesn't like it, bring it back right away and we'll exchange it."

We got lucky and didn't have to. But we did learn that if she does have a problem with a treat, we can take it back if we've only had 1 or 2 treats out of it.

Yep, I agree.

I'll do that. In fact, I've done it. I used to ask, and they always say, "Sure, go ahead." So now, I just do it. Actually, I just swap enough to make a "good" dozen for myself.

Years ago, I was at the supermarket in the section where the garbage can liners were. I was getting a bag/box that I had previously used before. A woman came up and asked me about them and I told her that I liked them. She proceeded to open a package and pull one of the liners out to make sure that it was the correct size or whatever. Then she put that package back on the shelf and got an unopened package. She made some remark about not getting a package that had already been opened. I was so flabbergasted!

I opened a carton once and found the bad dozen that the dairy person accidently left on the shelf.

I wiggle them to see if they 'stick' or not.

I don't see a problem opening a resealable package to confirm size or fabric (I have issues too) as long at it stays in its original condition.

I think that's absolutely ridiculous. If YOU opened the box/carton/package, YOU buy it. Especially when you'll be opening it in the exact same manner when you get home!

Knock knock, puddin' head...
