This is mostly for folks who are SGMA members but anyone can post suggestions.
I got my ballot in the mail today from the SGMA for nominations to the SGMA Hall of Fame class of 2009. We're allowed to nominate 1 living and 1 deacesed individual for the Hall. Groups may not be nominated.
I've actually been thinking about this for several months and I have decided which individuals I am going to nominate. They are:
Cecil Blackwood
Claude Hopper
I believe both are very deserving of the honor.
So, any other SGMA members want to reveal which folks they are going to nominate?

I'd love to see Danny Funderburk and Geraldine Morrison (sp?) from the Sunliters nominated. I'm not a member, so I'm just wishing.

I haven't a clue who is, or isnt in the SGMA Hall of Fame, so I can't really give a suggestion, but I do have a couple of questions.
1. Who all get ballots (not individuals, but what type, singers, promoters, radio station owners etc...)
2. Are there no groups in the Hall period, or are they selected differently than individuals? It seems odd that there is no category for groups, seeing as how alot of these legendary groups are far bigger than one person.
3. Are there any particular qualifications for singers to be eligible for nomination, such as being a member of the SGMA, or have been singing for X number of years?
Just a few questions that had, hope someone will take the time to answer. thanks in advance.

I'll try to answer a few of your questions . . .
#1. Members of the SGMA receive nomination ballots. It only costs $20 to become a member and let your voice be heard. I encourage you all to join the SGMA. Members receive free Hall of Fame CDs with your membership.
#2. Groups are not inducted into the SGMA Hall of Fame. Indeed, many groups are "bigger than the members", but when you induct a group, how do you decide which members of the group are inducted? For example, the Statesmen Quartet had over 50 members during its career. Where do you set the limit as to group inductees?
#3. There are eight criteria to be appraised of the potential membership. These are taken from the ballot:
Basic Standard: degree of contribution to the advancement of SG music and on the indelibility of his/her impact.
Individual Candidacy: only individuals may be elected. Companies, publications, radio stations, and groups - many of which significantly foster SG Music - are not eligible.
Scope of Activity: the individual may have excelled in a narrow, specific sphere or otherwise
Span of Influence: longetivity of involvement
Influence on Others
Quantity vs. Quality
Devotion to others
Professional Conduct and Image

hey, thanks for the answers. I appreciate the help. My only thoughts for the groups might be a deal where you give them a plaque similar to the artists plaque, maybe with just a generic quartet image on it, and just a list of all former members.
Taking your answers into account, I can see that as a group, it would need to be a special category, maybe done differently. You could bring in all the living members of a group for a ceremony. Not necesarily give them the physical things like their own plaques, or rings, or medals, but just bring them in, take a picture, and give the group a nice plaque in the hall.
I know it's probably not feasible, but just a thought.

I was at Dollywood during the Southern Gospel Festival, home of the SGMA and attended performances of over (20) twenty different groups and not one mentioned anything about the SGMA Hall Of Fame located there. Every group stated how great it was that Dollywood would host such an event, promoted the artist that were performing etc., but I would have thought that during this event with so many Southern Gospel Music Fans in attendance that the SGMA Hall Of Fame would have been promoted more...I am extremely proud of our Southern Gospel Music heritage and enjoy each visit to the SGMA Hall Of Fame. Just my humble opinion...

Do you still have to pay Dollywood admission to visit the Hall of Fame Museum? I think that's a crock. We have to give Dollywood 50.00 a person to visit the SGMA Hall of Fame. I'd much rather give the HoF and Museum 10.00 a piece to see it, rather than paying Dollywood. If they still want to keep it there, maybe have the entrance separate, so that you don't have to go into the park to get into the museum.
I'm also an advocate of having some kind of special pricing for show/concert watching vs. riding the rides.

A season pass which if you buy it today it is good through January 2, 2010 is only $73.00 per adult person. Where else can you buy entertainment that cheap? In October alone there are about 40 different Southern Gospel Groups doing over 250 shows. This doesn't even include the other type shows, country, bluegrass, 50's that are also going on at the same time. You also have the International Month, Bluegrass Month and Christmas season. With a season pass you can visit the Hall of Fame anytime you wish, as many times as you wish.

I agree with Bobby that the season pass is a great deal.
I suggest that a person (or at least one of a couple) get a gold pass. It will save $6 (or is it $8) parking each trip, and you get 20% off on any purchase, including food and purchases at the Hall of Fame. The Kingdom Heirs honor the Gold Pass on their product.
As for the Hall of Fame having a separate entrance and charge..it is my understanding that Dollywood is doing the SGMA a service by providing the space, not the other way around.

I agree, a season pass is better than one day tickets, but for those of us who can't afford gas money to make the 150 mile round trip every weekend, a one day price of 50+ is pretty steep for a couple of concerts.
Plus, if you stay all day to take in more than 2 shows, you'll pay through the nose for food and drinks.
If I could afford to make the trips all month long, a season pass would definately be a better deal.
I also understand that Dollywood probably provides and subsidizes the operation of the Hall of Fame, BUT my point is that for SG music fans, some kind of deal would be great where you could visit the Hall without the full park admission.
This time of year with the SG concerts is one thing, but what about the couple who are traveling through and would like to stop in and spend a half hour or so checking out the museum, on their summer vacation? All I'm saying is that it would be a great deal for SG fans to maybe pay 10 or 20 bucks to, say catch a Kingdom Heirs concert and tour the museum.
I know it will never happen as long as the almighty dollar is governing things, but I think for the cause of the gospel through music, something like this would be great.

I believe when SGMA was trying to find a home for a musuem and was having difficulty, Dollywood came to the rescue and built the building for the SGMA Hall of Fame Museum. Otherwise there would be no HOF. So I applaud Dollywood for making a way for the SGMA HOF Musuem.

There was talk a few years ago about keeping the museum open all year round. It was feasible because the Emporium is open year round. They would just need to put up a barrier so that people couldn't access the rest of the park. I was looking forward to it, but the idea fell through.

Let's keep in mind that without Dollywood, there wouldn't even be a physical hall of fame/museum for Southern Gospel music.

Country music artists are always visiting their Hall of Fame and Hall of Fame inductions for 2 reasons. 1) they actually care about their history, 2) it makes them look good.
Many of today's southern gospel artists seem to think they're too good to care about either.
Just my humble opinion also.

I know someone will think I'm being negative, but...after much consideration, I went to the SGMA site to join. To make a long story short, they would probably double their membership if they had a secure site for membership. I gave up when I got to the point of entering payment information and the site isn't secure. I (nor should anyone else) enter my bank card information on any site that isn't secure. Oh well, I tried.

I don't think it's the artists' place to promote the hall of fame. All visitors going into Dollywood are presented with a map, etc., and can even see the building when they enter the gates. The singers only have 30 minutes to perform and I think they have more on their minds than getting people to visit the Hall of Fame. I don't think that's an indication of whether or not they are proud of their heritage.

Maybe have some benefit concerts to raise money to build their own facility out of Dollywood, maybe somewhere that could double as a theatre/Hall of Fame.
You could have different groups donate their time once a year. Have 12 concerts a year, bring in 2 or 3 groups each time, all proceeds could go into running the HOF/concert hall/museum.
I can't think of any big time group that couldn't donate one night a year, or even one night every 6 months for a real SGMA Hall of Fame. One that they can be proud of.

Have you had the opportunity to visit the current Hall of Fame? It's nothing to the extent of the Country Music Hall of Fame, but it's quite interesting and quite "real".
I would have no problem spending several hours looking through the exhibits and interactive kiosks.
I can't help but wonder how many people would visit a "stand alone" hall of fame on a regular basis. I think you have some excellent ideas, but actually putting them into practice would be the difficult part.
You're exactly right. There are many groups that COULD donate one night a year to the hall of fame. However, finding those that WOULD do so would be the operative word.
When so few in the industry even attend the annual induction ceremony, I can't help but think that it would be difficult to get them to donate their services to providing a free concert.
