I saw a line in a movie awhile back where the mother was teaching the daughter that one must suffer in order to be beautiful. Gone are the days of squeezing our waists so tightly into corsets that we cannot breathe, but there are a few things that we still wear (high heels come to mind) that are not good for us, are often uncomfortable, and yet we wear. Do you ever wear things that are not comfortable for the sake of beauty? I'll admit that I do sometimes, although not for more than a couple of hours at a time. Is this something that we as women should give up doing, or is it okay in moderation?

No heels, no skirts, no dresses. Only comfy jeans for me! I only wear shoes that are comfy because I try to avoid more back pain. And I don't wear dresses or skirts because to me they are annoying to wear. I prefer my jeans :o)

Do you ever wear things that are not comfortable for the sake of beauty? I won't say for the sake of beauty as much as for the sake of feeling pulled together and coordinated! I loooove heels and cute strappy heeled sandals when the outfit/occasion calls for them. Even though they are not as comfortable as other shoes I own, I will wear them if they are what sets my outfit off nicely and it's for a limited time. But, I don't wear them for all day or for events, or when I have to do a lot of walking...those kinds of shoes were never intended for that. quote:
Is this something that we as women should give up doing, or is it okay in moderation? I don't feel any inclination to stop. When it gets to the point that it's not worth it to me, then I'll stop. But until then, I know my limits and where it is and isn't appropriate to wear those things. And I try to buy better quality shoes so they aren't always as uncomfortable as they may look. I don't think there is anything wrong with dressing up when the occasion calls for it, and I am not about to wear a nice, dressy outfit then toss on casual or old-lady looking shoes!

I say this to my daughter all the time (though at 2 she doesn't understand me.) It is very painful for her when I do her hair, but it needs to be done. So I always say, she's going to have to suffer for beauty and she's going to have to get used to it because it won't get any better.

If the husband is happy, then whatever. When I was single and worked in an office, I wore heels and pantyhose just about everyday, I got used to it after a while though. The blisters were terrible though because I didn't make enough money to buy expensive heels, I'd get them from Payless and Walmart.

Nope, I don't. I don't see a need. I can look great in comfy clothes, and heels are bad for feet and backs anyway. My back already hates me, no need to make it worse. My hubby is the same way, so we're a good match. I guess if someone enjoys it, then ok. But it's definitely not for me.

In a word, no. Bunions and a bad back are not worth it. There are other options available that are just as attractive, comfortable and appropriate for the occasion.

If I had bunions, got blisters,or had a bad back, I'd stop too! I've never had issues from shoes because I am careful with the brands I buy, how they fit, and how long I wear them for. I only get the chance to dress up once or twice a week for 2-3 hours at a time anyway, so it's not like I live in my heels. I'm sure the day will come when I'll decide to give them up. Maybe not. My mom is 65 and still wears nice heels when she dresses up. It's in the blood quote:
I pluck my eyebrows, that hurts, but I will always do it. That's very true! That causes me more pain than my shoes ever did...lol.

People still wear pantyhose????? I wear them in the colder weather only when I'm wearing a very dressy/formal type skirt that bare legs just don't look "finished" with. I don't find them uncomfortable at all when it's cold, but I tend to wear dressy pants more than skirts in the winter for church. I never wear pantyhose in the summer, though...not here! Well, if I have a formal summer wedding to sing at, I will, but if it's hot outside, those suckers are taken off the minute I hit the car!

I refuse to wear them now. If I'm cold, I wear pants. Yea, I definitely don't wear them when I don't have to. Only when I have a formal-type skirt that needs them. I only have a few of those and I save them for weddings I sing at...too dressy for our church anyway. Almost all of my skirts for church are casual spring/summer skirts that are made for bare legs and sandals. quote:
And since I've moved to Cali, I don't know anyone except the blue-haired old ladies at church who wear pantyhose. That's interesting...here, lots of younger women still wear them when really dressing up...not normal every Sunday church dressing, but weddings and things. I've noticed several of the young women wearing knit tights again with casual fall skirts this season. I guess for warmth, but I prefer pants when it's cold out.

ORIGINAL: HisCovenant IMO, it's all about balance and that's what I struggle to achieve with my beauty regime and clothing. I don't always get there, but that's my goal. Ah, balance. That's really the answer for almost everything, isn't it? Sure wish I could achieve more of it!!

This girl hasn't worn them in years and if it's up to her, she never will wear them again.

Even at fancy weddings I've not seen people wear nylons. Maybe I'm just not paying attention???? I don't know. Because I adore shoes, I am always paying attention to other's shoes, which makes me aware of nylons/no nylons. I wore a dress and shoes very similar to this 2 weeks ago for a wedding. I tried it with no nylons and it just looked so unfinished and not quite as nice. But with the sheer black hose, it was perfect. That's when I wear them! Maybe if I wasn't so fair skinned, I wouldn't feel they were necessary, but the white bare legs in between the great shoes and nice dress just wasn't cutting it! I have few clothes that reqire them though, thank goodness.

LOL! I do like my white skin and legs, just not as a homing beacon which they looked like with that black dress!
