Depends on the family and how well behaved the children are. If there is chaos at the dinner table along with adult children who do not know how to manage their little darlings then i will take the dog. Only mothers are doomed to love their children. On the other hand, sitting down with well behaved children is a blessing. Is it too much to expect civility and common courtesy from children?

But it may be too much to expect them to learn how to sit and eat politely if they are banished to the kitchen.
I used to get corrected at the table by my mom for correcting my little ones. Irony anyone?

If we neglect correcting, then we neglect the children. I, as the grandma, could snicker if I hid it, but my daughter corrected my grandson.
The thing is, correction starts when they are tiny; then, they will be able to sit at the table and all will enjoy being together. I love having my grandchildren all around me. And I love my children for rearing them so that this is possible.

We had two thanksgivings at my house this year.
The first was for family and today, Friday, was for my stepson's friends. Thing is, he has a "clingy" firend that showed up on family day. I was a little put off by his infringement, since that is his charactor anyways, until I found out that his only family down here, his step dad and a step-sister, did not invite him for thanksgiving.
So we all sat at the table together. Friend, stepson, my grandson and his mom and half sister, my daughter, my wife and myself.
Gorandson is 5, ate chicken nuggets and cheese-its. His sister is 9 and she will eat anything ( except pecans ).
Its probably just one of my percularities but...I find the process of being at a table where people are eating....a little disgusting. I do it seldom, usually only at holidays.
The kid table issue. It depends on the dynamics of the family. If the kids are small and mom needs to help, possibly a seperate table would enable her to do a better job...maybe, maybe not.
I absolutely have no problem with kids being seen and not heard.It is a matter of respect...kids respecting adults. Its lost in our culture today. Kids interupting adults all the time for whatever thing they want. It does not respect the adult. I had no problem with it as a kid. I don't have a problem with it now.

Isn't there some happy medium between kids being seen and not heard and kids interrupting adults all the time? What about kids joining the conversation that the adults are having?

And rather sad, aint it? how you can sometimes tell what type of parent someone is by watching their kid(s), or visa-versa.

If my kids acted up, I would be embarrassed, take them to the car and go home.
