It's also important to note that those in need are many times the immigrants. They get all the coverage a person can want while our own citizens who really need it get denied.

Our taxes are paying for them, while they pay no taxes at all.

Most Americans pay NO federal or state income tax.

They like the illegals pay hidden taxes and sales tax.

It is also false to say illegals can get all the coverage they want.

I have worked illegals. They paid in federal, state and FICA taxes. They did not get a "refund". Many illegals use false papers to get jobs and we owners do hold out taxes on them and pay the federal match.

Dan you want to look at what the wealthy taxpayers are paying for.

Now let's look that the bottom fifty percent and see what they get for "free" with a progressive tax system.

Don't they need to pay "something" for the freedoms they enjoy by living in this country where "others" are supporting them?

I think I've said elsewhere (maybe not this thread) that I don't have a problem with everybody paying something.

But that still doesn't negate what I said about protective services being more valuable to those who have more to protect.

Well then we don't need to raise the taxes on the wealth do we. We need to make the 40% who pay NOTHING or get welfare checks in the form of EIC to pay up something.

2007 --- payments where Earned Income Tax Credit exceeds tax liability ($38.3 billion)

Stamper,

For me the problem is not "how" taxes are collected rather it's "why" they are collected and how they are being used.

If we collect taxes for the few things we need the government for we would all be better off and our country would be much stronger.

We must find a way to stop the gov. from growing so rapidly and having citizens so dependant upon it that they don't know how to do the most basic things for themselves such as educate their children, feed themselves or provide for themselves basic medical care.

Then why make such a fuss over the EIC?

But over all, I agree with you that this government spends too much and is way too big.

Because they take money from me and give it to those people. It's a form of welfare. In 2007 it cost taxpayers $38.3 billion dollars in taxes collected from those of us who "pay" income taxes.

Then the solution is simple. Abolish the IRS and install the Fair Tax system.

See? It IS about how the taxes are collected.

I'm with PW31 on this....it's nothing more than tax welfare and it shouldn't be happening. If you want to give people money then do it the old fashioned way...via welfare and be honest about it.

But the "Fair Tax" system isn't "fair" either but that's another thread

Since this thread has become one about the progressive tax system we operate under, tell me how a consumption tax with one rate isn't fair. Have you read HR 25?

I haven't finished reading the entire bill but one area in which it is unfair relates to the use by a business of various equipment. Unless I am reading this incorrectly any of the equipment I buy for use in my office would be exemt from the tax even though I am the end user of the product (when I'm done with it is completely used up and has no FMV). Why should the end user of any product be exempted from the tax? I would be using the item in a service business that is exempted under the proposed law so I would not have to pay the tax.

In addition to the problem mentioned above there is also this problem:

SEC 903(c)

Self-Employment Income - For purposes of subsection (b) the term "self-employment income" means gross payments received for taxable property or servicesminus the sum of -

(1) gtross payments made for taxable property or services (without regard with wether tax was paid persuant to secxtion 101on such taxable property or services) and

(2) wages paid by the self-employed person to employess of the self-employed person.

Unless Iam reading this wrong the only deduction I would have as a self-employed person would be for the wages I paid my employees since I offer a service and not a product. What about all of the other expenses I incur such as personal property tax on equipment, rent, utiliteis etc. Why should I have to pay taxes self-employment taxes on business expenses>

I don't have your answers Rich. I do know that as a self employed person you would have issues different than the vast majority of wage earners who's paychecks are signed by someone else. As one of those people, I love the idea that the money I earn would be mine to spend, or save, as I see best. The TOTAL sum of it.

I saw there is a link where you can ask questions on the page I supplied. Perhaps your questions can be answered there.

Fair tax is an opinion. I don't see why being taxed on what you consume is any more or less fair than what we have now or at least what we had in the begginning. My biggest complaint about the "Fair Tax" is given some time it will be as big of a mess or bigger than what we have now. Rich has already pointed out an exemption in post 89. It hasn't even made it through committee and we already need accountants to notify us of our exemptions.

Let's see now....

A 120 page tax code vs. a 60,000 page code the accountants (or the IRS) can't even understand.

I know which one I'd pick.

How long will it stay 120 pages? Remember the very first income tax was 1% tax on what you earned. The very first fair tax being 120 pages with exemptions already isn't a very good start. : / The same guys that took that first income tax and morphed it into the 60,000 page monstrousity that it now is are the ones who will be looking at the 120 page fair tax and making changes and improvements to it.

As long as Congress can oversee and make changes to the tax code that a president can sign they are not going to tolerate such simple legislation dictating how the government makes their money.

That's why it is up to WE THE PEOPLE to keep on top of what our elected representatives do on "our behalf". (That last said with a whole heaping serving of cynicism.) Also sounds like an argument for congressional term limits too.

LOL I couldn't help but laugh. It will not stay at a 120 pages no more than God's laws stayed at only 10.

Really? God's commandments changed? What are numbers 11 and 12 then?

But that is a topic for the theology folder...

Taxation isn't the problem.

The problem is..we elect legislators who like to spend.

We are becoming more and more dependant on the government. I wonder...if people really knew that government programs are not FREE...no hold that thought. I forgot our culture.

Good luck. The slippery slope just got greased by this election.
