Listening requires a lot of concentration and as such it is very tiring and very difficult to do over a long period of time. Yet, it is very important; especially in certain professions such as law, medical profession, counselling etc ...

The "level" of listening depends on the circumstances and who you are listening to. For example listening to a friend talking about the football game is different to listening to a patient if you are a doctor. The latter requires much more attention from the listener.

When listening to someone attentively let them know you are doing so by your actions and body language. Nodding every now and then encourages them to keep talking. Saying hummm hummm (whilst nodding) every so often has the same effect. Ask them questions to elicit a better response and clarify details. Summarise every so often. For example:

"I see ... so you say you first felt the pain on Monday, and this continued on and off until Thursday. Is that right?"

I think you get the idea ....

The same applies when talking to someone and you wish them to understand. Ask them whether they understood. Whether they have any questions. Watch out for their body language. Are they attentive? Are they looking you in the eye, or looking elsewhere more interesting. Are they bored and about to fall asleep with your talking to them?

I'd better stop now before I bore you with my incessant talking .... !!!

Yeah, this is a big area, not just a point, and there are whole books written on the subject. See what you can find. It is hard, isn't it.
