My immediate boss told me she thought I'd be really good at a new position and asked me to submit a letter of interest to our director. I did and have an interview in two days.
After considering my childcare options and other things I have decided it is not a good idea for me. I feel pressure to take the job as, they need someone immediately. I am thinking I am just going to call and tell her I am flattered that she would consider me but, it is just not something I can do at this time but, possibly in the future.
Anything else I should say or do?

Why are u turning down a promotion? Child care options? You cannot work that out? Afraid? U got something against making more money? I don't get it? Perhaps u would be of far more value to your company if u took the promotion. Your boss certainly thinks that is the case.

See what you can work out with your boss before you turn it down. They may be able to work with you knowing of your situation.

That's a good plan. Tell them you are excited about the opportunity but want to do the best possible job. Explain that unfortunately for personal reasons you won't be able to, but if things change you will be sure to let them know. You might want to ask why type of person they are looking for to fill the job and offer to send them any recommendations you can think of.

Do the interview and then discuss your concerns with your boss. Childcare can be difficult, especially if this promotion will require you to work more hours. Sometimes it's just not possible right now, and if that ends up being the case, express your appreciation and do what's best for you and your children.

Absolutely go to the interview. Bring up your concerns there. You might be pleasantly surprised.
Of course, if you've changed your mind about wanting the job, then let them know that before the interview.

Couldn't have said it better. This is excellent advice!
Don't brush off an opportunity, and keep in mind that an interview just means you're interested in potentially taking the job (and they're interested in possibly hiring you.) It doesn't mean you're going to take it if they offer it to you (nor does it mean they'll offer it to you if you go to the interview.)
